saltyfamiliar··on Python 3.11
> why on earth is whitespace relevant??

To eliminate the need for braces and semicolons, of course. It's part of what makes python so easy to read and write. Is it really such a problem?

I honestly can't imagine disliking python. It's my goto for anything where performance doesn't matter due to its unmatched ergonomics and vast libs. Golang comes close but for some reason having to implement really common and basic things yourself is part of the language's design philosophy. Plus it's compiled so you can't just drop into the interpreter for a slick one-liner.

What's your preferred quick and dirty scripting/programming langage?

saltyfamiliar··on Matrix trailer dynamically uses current time
I felt the same way. The way the narrator's line is obviously spliced together just detracts from the rest of the trailer for the sake of a party trick.

I really hope this doesn't turn out to foreshadow the movie as a whole.

saltyfamiliar··on Facebook apology as AI labels black men 'primates'
How is it a racist outcome? This has nothing to do with the belief that one "race" is inherently better than another. It's a simple categorization error due to insufficient training data.
saltyfamiliar··on O.mg Cable
Would they really need many resources to take legal action? What you're describing is illegal. They could simply call the police if they found you out.
saltyfamiliar··on Old photos of Bedouin nomads, 1898
Same here. I ignored it and kept scrolling then suddenly all the pictures turned into the same adidas ad at once. Very dystopian.
saltyfamiliar··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
A "microdose" is enough to alleviate symptoms of depression without risking one's psychological stability. There is really no need to take more than ~0.5 grams of cubensis unless the goal is deep insight/profound experience.

I completely disagree with the term "microdosing" though. I think this should be considered a standard dosage. Nobody calls a few ml's of cough syrup a "microdose" just because half a liter can cause euphoria, disorientation, etc. Calling this amount of mushroom a "microdose" only furthers the impression that psilocybin is a primarily recreational substance.

saltyfamiliar··on Music for Programming
This is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.
saltyfamiliar··on Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena
The longest period of time that anything can legally be kept classified without exceedingly special circumstances is 75 years. Roswell was 74 years ago.
saltyfamiliar··on Amazon acquires MGM for $8.5B
I truly cannot relate. All one needs is a VPN, a torrent client, a browser and an internet connection. Most tv's nowadays are smart enough to either connect to a simple Windows share or at least be able to play movie files. My SO and I watch a new movie almost every single night with a very simple setup and rarely encounter problems. It reads to me like you've over engineered movie night and are now complaining about the complexity.
saltyfamiliar··on Terms and Conditions Game
I also insist that the second answer choice is valid. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
saltyfamiliar··on The Promise and Perils of Insect Farming
Mealworms are very highly chitinous and a low quality food source when compared to options like crickets or roaches.

Source: I keep insectivorous pets.

saltyfamiliar··on Hatetris – Tetris which always gives you the worst piece
Maybe it's dull and uninteresting but unless you keep it in mind at every layer of abstraction, you run the risk of drawing incorrect conclusions. People tend to recognize this fundamental lack of control in only the most obvious cases like familial wealth, race, nationality, iq etc.. but completely ignore it in the more subtle and important distinctions between people like early childhood experiences, stress in the household, metabolism, serotonin levels, emotional tendencies and intellectual influences. The sheer complexity involved in all of these factors causes them to be treated differently and unfairly reduced to "idk some people just get ahead in life because they work harder."
saltyfamiliar··on Hatetris – Tetris which always gives you the worst piece
Your ability to work hard is dependent on things like your nutrition, genetic temperament, and general outlook on life as developed by your parents, friends, mentors and life experiences. It's not just a magical innate ability that exists if you believe hard enough. This type of thinking becomes a problem when you begin associating "working hard" with having a superior moral character that deserves to be rewarded while other less good individuals can suck eggs.

It really is all luck.

saltyfamiliar··on What Should We Do If Extraterrestrials Show Up?
Hard agree on both counts. I think people on the internet tend to underestimate how religious most people on earth still are. I know a person that's convinced that ufo sighting could potentially be "angels." And this is a fairly intelligent person with a first world education. I can only I imagine the havoc that an alien encounter would wreak on other parts of the world...
saltyfamiliar··on Bitcoin mining hash rate drops as blackouts instituted in China
China stands to gain the most from bitcoin mooning at the expense of other countries' currencies. Every yuan exchanged for bitcoin siphons value out of the chinese monetary network and into the global cryptocurrency network. Ideally, if china secured a large portion of bitcoin and then ceased all bitcoin trading within their borders, they could allow other countries to foot the bill of economic instability while the net value of their assets increase.

Bitcoin is an economic weapons created by the chinese government.

saltyfamiliar··on Are you a lazy programmer?
They make great comedians.
saltyfamiliar··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
Sure, but if you want it to be _sound_ money, it has to backed by some kind of inherent scarcity or guarantee which implies work and energy expenditure. If you want to be able to store it on a flash drive and transfer it to a different continent with no intermediaries, that too will cost something. If it were 'fictional' enough to be free, it wouldn't be useful.
saltyfamiliar··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
I'd argue it doesn't actually matter. People only buying it as an investment vehicle is still enough to push into mainstream awareness and increase it's level of adoption and usefulness, and at its core, the reason it's an attractive investment in the first place is because it's deflationary, digital and decentralized.
saltyfamiliar··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
Ripple (XRP) has the 5th highest market cap and volume of any cryptocurrency, but it's very unpopular on a cultural level because it's basically centralized.
saltyfamiliar··on Time-lapse of a single cell transforming into a salamander (2019)
Completely agree. I think this could also explain the fundamental randomness we perceive at the quantum level. We're simply not seeing/unable to see the full picture.
saltyfamiliar··on Mortality rate for Black babies plummets when they’re delivered by Black doctors
This was my conclusion as well. Maybe because I (naively) have trouble imagining that white doctors would reliably care less about black babies than white babies. Regardless, it should be simple to test for: just compare the outcome of all medical care administered in hospitals with relatively high amounts of black doctors to those with low amounts of black doctors.
saltyfamiliar··on How to overcome Phone Addiction
You should try Vimium. Shift-o brings up an omnibar and opens your query in a new tab.
saltyfamiliar··on What If You Could Do It All Over?
What are some higher status jobs where I can use my above average ability to work with computers and sheer tenacity to compensate for my woefully underdeveloped social skills?
saltyfamiliar··on I Created a Trading Simulator
> I've never met any proponent of technical analysis who maintains that they can divine patterns purely from the shape of the candles, without knowing what they're trading or what day it is?

I have. The theory is that the fundamentals of the security are reflected in it's price movements, so reading its price action is roughly analogous to reading news relevant to the instrument. Also it's not really about looking at the "shapes of candles." That's a frankly primitive approach to technical analysis, and one of the biggest reasons that people keep drawing comparisons to astrology, numerology, divination, etc..

saltyfamiliar··on S&P 500 Plunges 7%, Triggering Market-Wide Stock Trading Halt
Did you even read the article you linked to? Of course dollar cost averaging doesn't work when the market is only going up, but that's not what's happening right now. The one third of the time when DCA works is when the market experiences a wild swing in price and then returns back to where it started, which means that unless you actually expect the US economy to collapse and remain in a collapsed state for the rest of your life, dollar cost averaging is the strategy to employ in this situation.
saltyfamiliar··on Calculating Pi: My Attempt at Breaking the Pi World Record
What an irresponsible use of energy. At least mine Bitcoin...
saltyfamiliar··on Sand dunes can 'communicate' with each other
Communicate: 1. Share or exchange information, news or ideas. 2. Impart or pass on (information, news or ideas)

I think it can be argued that to say sand dunes communicate with each other is not anthropomorphization at all. I didn't take it that way and I doubt very many people took it to mean that sand dunes were exhibiting sentience and chit-chatting about the weather.

saltyfamiliar··on 5-MeO-DMT: 20-minute psychoactive experience that’s transforming lives
Psychedelics as a sleep aid? You must have a very quiet mind. I can't sleep after a single bowl of weed.
saltyfamiliar··on Tips from Poland on Old-School Zero Waste (2019)
Interesting. It sounds like communism is a better system for planning and building infrastructure while capitalism is a better system for using and living within infrastructure.
saltyfamiliar··on Artists who paint with their feet have unique brain patterns
I can barely handle the simultaneous absurdity and obviousness of this study.
