saltwatercowboy··on Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
Quite a bit in audio, consumer or professional. I've had my Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 desktop speakers for nearly a decade. Audio Technica are another trusted brand, especially for monitor headphones.
saltwatercowboy··on MusiCoT, a chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting technique for music generation [pdf]
You're thinking of muzak. Vaporwave was a pastiche and explored/deconstructed that sound intentionally as a form of artistic expression.
saltwatercowboy··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
I see — have you tried Jabra? Their in-ear headphones have a great pass-through mode (as well as ANC/others) that work really well for me when I'm running.
saltwatercowboy··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Wondering if he means the thresholds are off. I imagine erring on the side of caution is the smarter thing to do re: liability. Imagine if a cyclist couldn't hear a quieter electric car and turned into its path because the headphones are geared towards a low band pass.
saltwatercowboy··on Terraforming Mars may be easier than scientists thought
Someone call Sax Russell!
saltwatercowboy··on Shapeshift: Semantically map JSON objects using key-level vector embeddings
The lazy part of my brain screams “use this instead of dealing properly with nested objects!” In a production setting I’d be worried about consistency from the base to result layers if based on LLM transpositioning.
saltwatercowboy··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Perhaps it can be used to drop water balloons full of Gatorade on parched travellers. Or, to extend the earlier concept, miniaturised atom bombs on beatniks.
saltwatercowboy··on The (history of) spice must flow
Great article. One note: it’s the Metropolitan Museum of Art, not Modern Art (you’re thinking of MoMA).
saltwatercowboy··on RustPython
> That said, python makes me wince.

O lord of the compiler, lend us thine wisdom.

saltwatercowboy··on An Open Letter to the Python Software Foundation
You aren't wrong. Tanzania != Malaysia, as another commenter seemed to think. Their version of Sharia is nowhere near as strict.

Incidents of violence are the product of opportunity and generally perpetrated through in-group policing. Westerners and other African travellers are less exposed, so in the case of an LGBT developer from the US travelling to Zanzibar (which is also a very special case relative to the rest of Tanzania) I doubt they'd be in any real danger unless they were publicly displaying unambiguous attraction to the same-sex. I know an openly gay couple living in Kinshasa, which is a much more dangerous environment.

This is a very cheap shot from PSF and a classic case of perfect defeating good.

saltwatercowboy··on Where Is OpenCV 5?
Thanks - I’ll check it out.
saltwatercowboy··on Where Is OpenCV 5?
Yes - not sure how this has been overlooked. For Python/torch I tend to use cv2 with an albumentations augmentation pipeline, which is much faster than PIL/torch transforms.
saltwatercowboy··on AI system self-organises to develop features of brains of complex organisms
FFTs can be useful when constructing CNN pipelines in unsupervised domain adaptation too. Fourier domain adaptation (FDA) uses the calculated amplitude of a target set to modify the source (train) set. Cool and quick to implement.
saltwatercowboy··on Threads has "just under" 100M monthly active users
a) is not just technical - it's also about barrier to entry. A more user-friendly solution might have allowed custom handles. That's not the point. Meta want to gobble up other forms of personal data with Threads and retain its value through a link to an ostensibly real person on Instagram. They want you to stay in the bullshit garden and avoid the legwork of linking anonymised data to individuals.
saltwatercowboy··on OpenAI just replaced its core values with completely different ones
Did I miss something? Since when is capital drying up in AI?
saltwatercowboy··on Replacing Engineering Managers with AI Agents
I love Manna. It strikes such a tongue-in-cheek deal between outsized, sort of ridiculous outcomes that come off as completely bonkers but still somehow make you think.

"Automated management software replaces fast food workers" ---> "Utopians Bought Australia"

Hard to think of other stories that manage that tone. Huxley's Island:

"Self-serving journalist relates psychedelic ethnography" ---> "Magic Mushrooms Cannot Save You From the Forces of Capital"

and Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, maybe:

"Disenchanted immortal undergoes social death" ---> "Cowboy Hats vs. Entropy"

saltwatercowboy··on AI and the End of Programming
That’s… not true. Action and speech aren’t at odds. They’re not even clearly delineated.

Where would basic planning fit here? Is it a “faux demonstration” (??) for engineers to talk through their ideas for approaching a problem before attempting it?

saltwatercowboy··on The Silicon Valley elite who want to build a city from scratch
“Useless eater” is a term I suppose I’m disappointed, but not surprised by, at this point.
saltwatercowboy··on Changes to UK Surveillance Regime May Violate International Law
It’s cultural. I’m dual national US/UK - there’s less of a focus on individual rights generally. Rocking the boat is frowned upon in a lot of circles. Drives me nuts.
saltwatercowboy··on Killer whales wreck boat in latest attack off Spain
I don’t know. I’m very much waiting for the Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) to release their first set of results.
