salsakran··on Github is Your New Resume
If you're using this sort of approach, check out www.gitalytics.com, a site I made to automate this sort of search when I was doing it.
salsakran··on Ask HN: If you could change one thing on the Web, what would it be?
The DOM + Javascript manipulations of it. Specifically the zillion ways.

Replaced with something else. Just about anything else, so long as it's a single clear standard.

salsakran··on [dead]
With all due respect to Stonebraker, I consider FB's MySQL use a success story. They're successfully scaled it to truly crazy traffic loads. It might be a pain, and sharding schemes are always a pain in the ass, but they're scaled it to levels unheard of for any of the NewSQL solutions being proposed as silver bullets ..
salsakran··on Storm courts I/O lovers with 96GB, 32-core cloud server
True, but the I/O characteristics of one 96GB box is drastically different from running 7 in parallel. It's kind of a silly comparison.
salsakran··on Storm courts I/O lovers with 96GB, 32-core cloud server
Hmmm.... the pricing looks tempting.

Anyone know of any history of their uptime?

salsakran··on Raising The Most Money Doesn’t Mean Your Company Will Become The Most Valuable
Maybe I'm missing something, but of those companies, several are public at multiples of their total raised funds and only one is out of business. They might not have become Google 2.0 but I'd be hard pressed to call that collection of companies a cautionary tale against raising lots of money.

Note that I'm not disagreeing with the premise that raising money shouldn't be a metric of success, just with the specific examples.

salsakran··on Skype options turn out to be worthless
It's not a question of them expiring. It's that the company issuing them had an opportunity to rebuy them at cost. I.e. your vesting schedule is completely meaningless. It's one of those situations where someone uses a word that has a specific set of associations (i.e. "I vest 25%, that means I get them right?") and then attaches terms that make it mean something else entirely ("yes, you get them, but I can take them away at my option without compensating you").
salsakran··on Skype options turn out to be worthless
I'd say that 4 year vesting with a 1 year cliff is pretty much standard across the valley.
salsakran··on Skype options turn out to be worthless
The problem with that is that the legalese version of the contract is supposed to be definitive. If they also provide a plain english and one of the terms when exercised invalidates a "plain english" provision, how is that supposed to be interpreted? In this case it was one of those details that mattered greatly. A plain english version would have just said "you get X options you can exercise on this vesting schedule, subject to terms(*)"
salsakran··on Skype options turn out to be worthless
That's all well and good, but there are nontrivial costs to creating a system where you need to have a lawyer vet every line of every contract you sign.

There's been a general consensus about what a "market" employee agreement contains, which lets people make decisions in a relatively uniform way between offers. If it becomes known that any company associated with a certain firm has wacko contracts and that you'll need to pay 20k in legal time to even evaluate their offer compared to others, it becomes an easy no all around.

salsakran··on Facebook To Launch Music Service With Spotify
except that the other example they give (Warner Bros) was just an app made by them with no deep integration past using the api and credits.
salsakran··on Facebook To Launch Music Service With Spotify
so .... Spotify's launching a facebook app?
salsakran··on Gamifying Github
I'll also plug www.gitalytics.com ;)
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
added the third suggestion. second two are in the works!
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
I've had to do a pretty unholy mix of things to actually find all projects someone's contributed to. It crawls commit logs for some specific cases. I'm not doing a direct analysis of the git graph (yet), but that's probably the end state. If I can come up with a couple dozen machines.
salsakran··on Django Canvas
Awesome!

How hard is it to add other apps to the interface?

salsakran··on Linode outage in Fremont
Ditto. This is getting really annoying. Are there any other Linode DCs on this coast?
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Mongodb crashed overnight. Guess it's not webscale or something. It's up and I'm trying to figure out what killed it.
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
well, to be precise, that fork is owned by ukd1.I should clean up the wording.
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
fyi, this is fixed now.
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Weird. Think you might have been on a commit that had a php in it?

Or maybe it knows that you secretly yearn to write wordpress plugins?;)

salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Check back in a few hours.

Once the "incomplete profile" marker disappears the numbers should be correct. If they are still incorrect, could you do me a favor and send me a link to the repo in question? I'd greatly appreciate it!

salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Can you give me a link to it to the repo in question? It should be the number of commits. Was the initial master branch you used what you uploaded to github? I'm curious as well ....
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Seems like I've already started to hit my quota on some requests. If you get any weird errors, bookmark it and check back tomorrow. I'll work on getting my account whitelisted as there seems to be some demand for this =)
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
awesome =/

seems like python's urllib doesn't do unicode encoding properly.

salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
It seems to die on that. I'll look into it and roll out a fix as soon as the traffic dies down a bit.
salsakran··on Show HN: Gitalytics.com - Quicker Way to check someone's github profile
Different parts have different latencies. The profile stuff is mainly directly from github. Aggregations on contributions take a while however.
salsakran··on Greplin’s Chrome Extension Now Makes Gmail Search Infinitely Better
The existence of a way to shard searches doesn't make scaling real time search on email (hint: do some back of the envelope calculation on how much data that involves) a non-issue.
salsakran··on Greplin’s Chrome Extension Now Makes Gmail Search Infinitely Better
I think all the talk of being faster than gmail search is going to last until they actually get a lot of users. It's easy to make search fast for small datasets.
salsakran··on Ask HN: How are lean startups easily accepting CC payments?
I'm using Paypal Pro payments + Recurly. Between the ease of opening an account and ease of integration it made the slightly higher charges well worth it. Recurly doesn't have drop in django integration, but I'll eventually clean up and open source the subscription/registration app I'm using.
