salex89··on Ask HN: How comfortable do you feel using cloud-based password managers?
My company uses some enterprise Lastpass, and I would never give a dime for it myself. Not because of the quality, but because if the UX. I constantly have issues to find credentials shared with me, the plug-in is constantly interrupting my usual flow, and so on. Just not a fan. Personally I use KeePass. I know there are some security concerns with the application itself, but it has served me well.

Just because of the LastPass experience I'm not sure would I try something else.

salex89··on A Tale of Two LEDs
I'm not sure how common it is, but I met a guy who uses a CD drive to identify the unit he is searching for. Pops them out remotely. Of course it is applicable only if your servers have CD drives, but it's hell of a lot easier than spotting LED patterns.
salex89··on RSI as a Developer
Just wanted to chime in with my experiences with the mouse. I never had any RSI since last winter. Basically my whole life I used some sort of ergo-like, lightweight large gaming mice. Sometimes very cheap ones. But on my new workspace I got a quality, yet slightly uncomfortable wireless mouse, medium sized so it can be carried around. Few months later I developed a strange pain which was going away during the weekend. Long story short, i reluctantly borrowed, later buyes, a Logitech MX Master mouse, and it all went away. I use it still. I say reluctantly because of all my gaming mice I perceived this one as heavy and sluggish. But I've got to hand it to it, after hours of using it, there is no fatigue in the wrist or arm.
salex89··on Show HN: Hello
Correct, I use that. However, it is jus one image and without anything else.

Well, the Russians are also doing some shady stuff... They call it the Sputnik Inspektor.

salex89··on Show HN: Hello
It's pretty. Somehow Momentum, which is similar, didn't catch up to me. Is there any way to show the same favorites as with the default Chrome setup, only over the image of the day? :)
salex89··on Portugal’s Marmelada Tastes Nothing Like Marmalade (2018)
Leggaly this Portugese marmelade is now defined as jelly marmalade. The definitions are basically the stuff our grandmas considered one or another.

We also have pekmez, jam, marmelade. Pekmez should have the least added sugar and made out of chunks of whole fruits (mixed) cooked/melted. Jam has a bit more sugar, but I think it should be out of one fruit. Marmalade has more added sugar and can have more less desirable parts as core or pits. Jelly marmalade is just marmalade with more gelatine.

salex89··on VMware Acquires Carbon Black for $2.1B and Pivotal for $2.7B
I was in a pub hearing a guy talking about the startup I was/am working in being acquired soon. He was right....
salex89··on It is perfectly OK to only code at work, you can have a life too
I really wanted to code my own side projects in my spare time. I always have so much ideas that I become anxious when will I have time for them all.

But during my spare time, which I would like to designate to my own projects, life kicks in. Something breaks, an old friend is back in town, I don't feel well, there is a recipe I want to try or my girlfriend and I want to have a day outdoors because we didn't have enough quality time together during the week. Then Sunday evening comes and I become sad because I'm far behind my own plans.

But the most important thing I was missing is thet I actually enjoy stuff beyond coding. I was so concentrated on it that I stopped being thankful for all of the detours that make my life complete and meaningful. Tonight I'm going to change the mixer tap at my folks home, and I'm glad I'll make them happy and life a bit more comfortable. My buddy is back, so latter were going out for drinks, we're gonna have a ball. And I actually love those things, it's refreshing. Yes I would like to brush up on some fresher skills or try out the latest AWS Blazefeather. And I will eventually. But I realized that other stuff in life makes me also a calm and enjoyable person, and personality and temper is also a part of an engineers value.

salex89··on Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos calls GE a ‘bigger fraud than Enron’
First of all, English is not my native language nor I live in an English speaking country. Second, I didn't choose to read those books, the education system made me :). I don't read them that much today, but did enjoy it. Third, this is not bragging as I don't consider myself being super duper educated. I just read some books from time to time. I honestly thought it was the proper way to spell it, because I've seen it like that.

The style just looked to me as people around me describe events, often starting with the look of the scene, including the person.

Nevertheless, thanks for learning me how to spell a new word.

salex89··on Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos calls GE a ‘bigger fraud than Enron’
Visualization sake? I often write like that, possibly under the influence of Russian/European 18th and 19th century literature I read during most of my life, thanks to education around here. It excels in overly detailed visualizations.

Please don't start ringing alarms, not everyone is a biggot. Not saying the commenter isn't, just don't judge.

salex89··on Boeing May Halt 737 Max Production
We do not have details of this anomaly, but I hope you understand that some situations must be simulated, flying into them is difficult, maybe not possible, or downright unsafe.

I don't know how much about planes do you know (I'm starting to feel not much since excessive, maintained pitch during flare didn't tell you anything). But the context explained here is rare and obviously more manageable than "one of three redundant sensors failed and an aircraft went out of the sky without giving the crew even a possibility to save their lives".

EDIT: Found new details. The pilot has to keep the excessive pitch although AWARE that he is stalling the aircraft.

salex89··on Bedridden for 11 years, he discovered a surgery for his adrenal condition
Are you sure you read that properly? Maybe it is not clear from the text, but basically adrenal gland malfunction which result in hyperproduction of adrenaline literally burn you up.

Hormone disbalance in general can mess you up seriously. I have a female friend which had all sorts of health issues. Bringing hormone levels under control (not hormones themselves but the causes) helped her become a new person and liven up. She might even consider having kids now. She is still under all sorts of therapies, but it is not trivial to relate causes and effects, her case not being even remotely mistic. Imagine when the direct cause is a rarely problematic hormone, provoked by an even more obscure issue.

salex89··on Bedridden for 11 years, he discovered a surgery for his adrenal condition
Wow... Just wow. My girlfriend is a internal medicine specialist student and she was blown away. As she read she basically went through a ll possible explanations that the other doctors had. However she actually knew about this condition, it is extremely rare but not unheard of. Possibly because of cases like this she learned about them, but she said she would never connect that to something looking so neural, it is expected for it to induce cardiological issues.
salex89··on Boeing May Halt 737 Max Production
But it does matter. This A321neo issue is identified during internal simulated tests, never happened or reported on any commercial or test flight.

The issue consists of the anti-stall protection not being aggressive enough under SPECIFIC circumstances:

- Airplane is in Flare mode - Pilot applies sudden and excessive pitch up - Keeps the pitch during pre stall and stall period

salex89··on Boeing 737 Max ordered by Ryanair undergoes name change
Can't blame Ryanair by themselves too much. Their whole company and business depends on the 737, and their foreseeable future on the Max. Not a pleasant situation to be in. Even Ryanair is not that big to handle the dumpster fire Boeing started.

I'm more irritated with IAG who is ordering a bunch of Maxes while they are still grounded and who knows when will fly again, and what the hell is wrong with them. Even giving up a part of their Airbus fleet maintenance to Boeing. Truth be told, the Max will probably fly again and it will be a very scrutinized aircraft so this is a wise business decision. Just don't mind me considering it joining the dark side.

salex89··on Boeing 737 Max Grounding Could Stretch into 2020
IAG must be very proud of their order by now...
salex89··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
Not intentionally, but generally yes, just by forgetting a glass. However, it also has not happened recently, I don't drink any kind of bought juice any more. I squeeze it myself.
salex89··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
Possibly, but two oranges usually fill up a glass nicely.
salex89··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
I'm no food technologist but squeeze an orange and put it in a glass, which is pure orange guice (100%?) and leave it on a table, and do the same with the 100% store bought one. The one from a bottle or cardboard box, not the "squeezed today" ones which are refrigerated. There will certainly be a difference, the freshly squeezed one will be stale, possibly ransid within a day. The bought one, not so sure... So there is obviously "something" else. Either preservative or some process done to the fruite.

Not to mention the taste.

salex89··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
I don't understand, maybe due to a language difference. Does 100% fruit juice mean the store bought 100% fruit guice (the premium brands?) or literally freshly squeezed orange, immediately drank? Wouldn't also eating fresh fruits be linked?
salex89··on Boeing's software fix for the 737 Max overwhelms the plane's computer
I was trying to investigate this about Airbus but without much luck. I even found they use a 80186 with another Motorola processor for cross checking values. I also wonder does maybe Airbus have "more" processors for different tasks? I also read their A340 uses 80386. That might mean they have expertise and groundwork set to migrate the A320 to the i386, of they already haven't (hard to find data). The 'bus is a much more digitalised plane and 20 years younger, I would guess they've got something different or a bit more modern.
salex89··on Reset C by GE Light Bulbs [video]
Was a pinhole reset button so hard to implement?
salex89··on Boeing's 737 Max software outsourced to lower-paid engineers
You are correct, however... I can't imagine a single engineer with any kind of proper education (formal or not) implementing any piece of software or hardware without thinking:"One sensor? Really? What's the failure rate on this thing". That might have been enough to stop the chan of events.
salex89··on US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries
I hear you. But I just want to add one more perspective, when there is an intervention, the intervening party (US in this case) technically aligns with someone from the conflict. That might be a political oppositional force, it might be a national majority, it might be a region which is or is not a part of a country. Usually there is already some kind of conflict going on. I don't have any data, but from my own experience, a lot of people are not with either side, and they suffer greatly. It might be because of the sheer despair of the situation or the "oppressing" or "opposing" force. And don't be led to think that the force supported by the US plays nicely without war crimes, offence and with pure motives. Sometimes the party supported by the US has it's own agenda which aligns with the US and it is just beneficial to be supported. I guess that it makes sense and the great US wouldn't be the US without that kind of strategy.

This went political, and the topic was ecology. As this wasn't bad enough, this all goes with a huge ecological toll which impacts a broader number of people than those involved in conflict.

salex89··on US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries
Being on the side "kept in check", believe me, we were better off on ourselves. Dictators fall one way or another, 3rd party military intervention is rarely selective and not a bit subtle with the collaterals.
salex89··on Sweden has invented a word to encourage people not to fly
Thing is... I really enjoy flying. At one point in my life I travelled for business a lot and I only got tired when the travel become useless, so I changed my job. But I always loved the feeling I get in the skies, even through the small airplane window. I don't even mind airports that much, they have a vibe I like. I'm a giant aviation nerd.

During my lifetime, I wouldn't like flying to become something decadent. I'm hoping aircraft manufacturers will come up with something that will make it greener than ever and bring more people to the skies.

The thing I like about aviation is that there isn't so much a "petrolhead" attitude where as in cars only petrol/diesel is real driving for real men and electric is often looked upon as "girly". I think lovers look forward to anything that will bring them above the clouds.

salex89··on Living on the wrong side of a time zone can be hazardous to your health
I just wanted to greet you from Niš :-) .

On topic, we would really like to have later sunrises and later sunsets. This is with DST. During winter when it is much colder it gets dark around 16:00, and subsequently colder. I personally believe we are one time zone behind and should probably align with Bulgaria and Greece, but the industry is Western oriented and it would just cause mismatch with Central and Western Europe and even greater difference with US. Maybe even more important with ex-SFRY republics between which communication and travel is very lively.

salex89··on Microsoft Flight Simulator – E3 2019 – Announce Trailer
That's what I was wondering. Models will not be any smaller, and internet bandwidth is not so much of an issue. Maybe it's time to harness ye old servers they've got lying around the world.
salex89··on Microsoft Flight Simulator – E3 2019 – Announce Trailer
I'm interested in which way is Azure AI integrated in this. Maybe some physics offloading? Bird flocking? :)

I wounder will there be some other kind of cloud integration like dynamically streaming models from Azure, pay-per-flight models or such.
