sakopov··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
What's a good value for a used MacBook pro these days? Any of the older models worth buying today?
sakopov··on IBM Plunges After Anthropic's Latest Update Takes on COBOL
I think I've seen 2 initiatives to move off of AS/400 to a something else in my lifetime and neither one completed. One was at a bank another at an insurance company. Not to mention that a typical COBOL programmer is more interested in retiring than learning to vibe code. At this point I think the software stocks have reached peak panic and hysteria. There is just no rhyme or reason for sharp declines like this.
sakopov··on Fraud investigation is believing your lying eyes
I never understood why we have public schools but not public kindergartens.
sakopov··on How to effectively write quality code with AI
Every engineering org should be pleading devs to not let AI write tests. They're awful and sometimes they literally don't even assert the code that was generated and instead assert the code in tests.
sakopov··on Don't rent the cloud, own instead
Does anyone remember how cloud prices used to trend down? That was about 6 years ago and then seemingly after the pandemic everything started going the other way.
sakopov··on Silver plunges 30% in worst day since 1980, gold tumbles
$SLV is still up 125% in the past 6 months after this "collapse" which is absolutely bananas.
sakopov··on Is passive investment inflating a stockmarket bubble?
Calling everything a "bubble" without identifying where capital would rationally go instead is lazy analysis. I've been an investor for 15 years and every single year someone screams we're in a bubble. It never ends
sakopov··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
Man we're making some giant leaps equating early Hollywood talent with a bunch of modern day internet hoes.
sakopov··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
I never run into stability issues and couldn't care less about telemetry which feels like admitting some kind of a sin on HN. Windows 11 is fine and Linux will always be for niche use cases.
sakopov··on SendGrid isn’t emailing about ICE or BLM – it’s a phishing attack
Is this a new trend in phishing emails? They appear to be using legitimate domains to bypass spam detection. Usually the domains are associated with legitimate companies who are completely oblivious. I always wondered how this works. Is it a broken contact form somewhere?
sakopov··on US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level in More Than a Year
Hiring slowed to a crawl back in 2023. A nice smack in the face after the "Great Resignation" period.
sakopov··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Trump just said that Maduro and his wife have been captured and flown out of the country.
sakopov··on Show HN: I built a universal clipboard that syncs realtime on multiple devices
So you copy/paste things into the app on one device then copy it from the app on another device?
sakopov··on Nabokov's guide to foreigners learning Russian
The only difficult part of Russian is writing it. Most native Russian speakers, myself included, can't write properly even after completing 11 years of Russian language in school. Hundreds of rules nobody remembers.
sakopov··on The Scottish Highlands, the Appalachians, Atlas are the same mountain range
According to this study from 2005 [1] the Appalachians are eroding 6 meters per 1 million years while the rivers are incising 30-100 meters per same time period. So they're technically still becoming more rugged.

sakopov··on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
About a decade ago I walked El Camino de Santiago. On the very last day I had to catch a bus from Santiago de Compostela to the local airport to get on the flight to Madrid and head back home. I remember standing with my backpack on some random street at 6AM not really knowing where the hell the bus stop is. A woman walked up to me and asked me something. I could see she seemed frustrated and couldn't really understand what she was saying. Then started telling her in my very non-existent Spanish that I'm trying to get to the airport. She immediately grabbed my hand and just dragged me through all of the traffic straight to the bus stop a couple of block away ignoring all traffic lights. Then showed me on her fingers how many minutes the bus will arrive and walked away. Forever grateful to this woman for helping me not miss my flight home. I've had a number of similar encounters with strangers while on this trail. Spaniards really appreciate anyone dedicating their time to be on the trail and a lot of them go out of their way to accommodate people either with a free stay, food, a ride to a grocery store and etc.
sakopov··on I ignore the spotlight as a staff engineer
So you suggest firing people based on their title alone? Sounds pretty damn stupid.
sakopov··on “Captain Gains” on Capitol Hill
It's pretty incredible to see how public data puts this corruption out in the open with specific names at hand and these officials couldn't care any less. The level of corruption here is astronomically brazen. They know no one will do anything and people will just bend over.
sakopov··on Show HN: Wealthfolio 2.0- Open source investment tracker. Now Mobile and Docker
This looks great and it's nice to see development in this space! However, the "big box" alternatives for this which keep your accounts in sync are really cheap (I think I renewed my annual Quicken Simplify for $40) and, for the most part, "just work." So, I personally wouldn't want to switch to anything self-hosted unless it provided automated syncing. I'd actually be all over this if it did especially having a way to extend things with plugins.
sakopov··on Show HN: Encore – Type-safe back end framework that generates infra from code
Pretty interesting. I wish this was available for .net. Would love to try this out.
sakopov··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
Just some drafts in markdown but nothing I can share just yet. I'll be posting it here once I have the ebook done.
sakopov··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
Every time I talk acquaintances, friends and family members about finances I'm always shocked at how little people know about basic things like tax brackets, 401Ks, IRAs, ETFs, compounding interest, debt management and etc. So I decided to write a financial literacy/education book with a bit of humor and easily comprehensible language to distill some of these topics. I'm about 1 month into it and try to write a chapter a week.
sakopov··on Addiction Markets
> Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong rattled off crypto buzzwords at the end of the Q3 call, resolving $84K in prediction market bets to "yes."

sakopov··on $19B Wiped Out in Crypto's Biggest Liquidation
There is a thread on X which unravels the short trade placed hours before Trump's statement and linked it to an individual from Hong Kong

sakopov··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
I just tried your app and after providing my email the analysis I get is for a completely different address than what I entered. I tried twice just to make sure the address i entered was right.
sakopov··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
UTI almost always causes delirium in the elderly. Those with dementia go completely off the rails. When my grandma had UTI she was basically in a parallel dimension talking to her deceased parents and that kind of thing.
sakopov··on Dear Tesla Shareholder [pdf]
If Elon leaves, Tesla is cooked. Tesla nosedives every time his focus is on something else which is what's happened since he purchased Twitter, became a political activist and then left to work with Trump. The only reason Tesla trades at such high valuation is because of Elon and the cult following he built around the vision for the company. As soon as he's out of there the stock will lose all of its premium. Institutional investors like Ron Baron who are open supporters of Elon's vision will leave and the business will go to carmaker-like or negative margins. There is absolutely no evidence that Tesla can function at all without Elon but there is plenty of it floundering when he's not focused on it.
sakopov··on How modern life makes us sick
I did not do the northern route which I hear has spectacular views. I did the "French way" which I liked so much I did it again in 2017, however, it ended up being a completely different experience than the one I had the first time and I ended up finishing it in just 20 days. Did you end up doing the entire northern trail or just parts? When did you go?
sakopov··on How modern life makes us sick
I walked about 15 miles every day while hiking El Camino de Santiago. I lost around 50 pounds which would probably be unhealthy under any other conditions but I've never felt better and kept the weight off for years after.
sakopov··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
It's crazy to me how many people are lost talking about gun violence on here when he died as a victim of political violence. The problem is the mainstream narratives that are making people's brains melt who then go out and shoot people who disagree with them. Go read any comments to Kirk's videos on X. It is literally a fucking mental asylum.
