saidinesh5··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
Out of curiosity, Does anyone know where exactly does the bloat of the electron come from in terms of ram usage, compared to a "native toolkit"?

Because just parsing html/xml/some declarative ui description to create a scenegraph and pushing it to the GPU is something I'm sure even native frameworks like Qt do.

Yet I can feel the latency in vs code vs. say sublime text.

It's tempting to blame the huge js blobs trying to create an application abstraction over a document object model but i feel like there should be more to it than just that...

Qt 5.6 that too. Probably so that they can keep most of their user space closed source.
saidinesh5··on KDE celebrates the 29th birthday and kicks off the yearly fundraiser
Wow.. looks like this is the case with my HP too.. very plesant surprise indeed.. just opened my personal laptop after a week of sleep. battery is still 60%+ and fingerprint unlock works!
saidinesh5··on Leaving serverless led to performance improvement and a simplified architecture
> The serverless approach helped with GTM

Unlikely? They could've just as well deployed their single go binary to a vm from day 1 and it would've been smooth sailing for their use case, while they acquire customers.

The cloudflare workers they chose aren't really suited for latency critical, high throughput APIs they were designing.

saidinesh5··on Why is everything so scalable?
> If you have a simple job to do that fits in an AWS Lambda, why not deploy it that way, scalability is essentially free. But the real advantage is that by writing it as a Lambda you are forced to think of it in stateless terms.

What you are describing is already the example of premature optimization. The moment you are thinking of a job in terms of "fits in an AWS Lambda" you are automatically stuck with "Use S3 to store the results" and "use a queue to manage the jobs" decisions.

You don't even know if that job is the bottleneck that needs to scale. For all you know, writing a simple monolithic script to deploy onto a VM/server would be a lot simpler deployment. Just use the ram/filesystem as the cache. Write the results to the filesystem/database. When the time comes to scale you know exactly which parts of your monolith are the bottleneck that need to be split. For all you know - you can simply replicate your monolith, shard the inputs and the scaling is already done. Or just use the DB's replication functionality.

To put things into perspective, even a cheap raspberry pi/entry level cloud VM gives you thousands of postgres queries per second. Most startups I worked at NEVER hit that number. Yet their deployment stories started off with "let's use lambdas, s3, etc..". That's just added complexity. And a lot of bills - if it weren't for the "free cloud credits".

saidinesh5··on KDE celebrates the 29th birthday and kicks off the yearly fundraiser
I'm still surprised at how smooth KDE Plasma + Wayland + Input actions on Arch feels on a fresh install on my new HP AMD laptop.

The Only slightly wonky thing has been the fingerprint reader. Other than that my Linux set up now feels smoother than my office Mac. AND I get way better battery life compared to Windows on the same machine.

Special call outs to: kwin, dolphin, yakuake, kde-connect

saidinesh5··on JSON River – Parse JSON incrementally as it streams in
I wrote something similar in my last job where we had to parse and query data from huge (50+ GB? I remember they weren't even fitting in my laptop) json files that were stored in an S3 Bucket..

We used the streaming parser to create an index of the file locally {json key: (byte offset, byte size)} and then simply used http range queries to access the data we needed.

Here is the full write up about it:

And here is the open sourced code:

saidinesh5··on LineageOS 23
A few years ago, Lineage was just a customizable tinkerer friendly AOSP. It served as a base for a lot more Android distros. It was just a smoother Android variant with features like double tap on the notification bar to sleep, better integrated root support, more built in theming options.

Graphene OS was only available for a few Pixel Devices whose source was fully available and mainly focused on security features like improved permissions and more anti tracking features.

To give an example, a company I worked for shipped it's phones with a Lineage OS base with a few patches from Graphene OS to replace default ntp and connectivity check servers.

saidinesh5··on Qualcomm to acquire Arduino
Do you happen to know how good the Linux environment is on the Dragonwing SoC.

I think their slides say Debian, but didn't mention what binary blobs one needs to have for enabling various functionality the SoC provides / how much their kernel deviates from mainline kernel ...

saidinesh5··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
How much of this is due to the awful mobile first design paradigms that infest a lot of web development these days?

Because 3-4 sponsored ads used to be always there.. but they used to be clearly marked as such and to the right side of the page previously..

saidinesh5··on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version
My go to for gaming has been Steam Deck on the couch or bed though. The whole weight of it NOT on my wrists.

This has been so comfortable that this helped me ignore the pain in my arm after a fracture/surgery this year.

saidinesh5··on Why your outdoorsy friend suddenly has a gummy bear power bank
Looks like the article you've shared is from 2019 (at the bottom of their page?).

Things changed a lot since then. Most power banks these days use just lipo pouches.

saidinesh5··on As Android developer verification gets ready to go, a new reason to be worried
I'm in India. Usually seniors etc... Just ask family members to do their transactions. My mom basically does all the transactions for my grand parents..

For the people too poor to own a phone, they just use cash in most places they can... To put things into perspective even road side beggars/homeless people just show you a QR code on a piece of paper for where to pay them these days..

saidinesh5··on As Android developer verification gets ready to go, a new reason to be worried
For a lot of us who have to use payment apps, banking apps, government apps, these two are pretty much the only options. :/
saidinesh5··on KDE is now my favorite desktop
The window management and dolphin for file management for one. KDE let's you easily pin windows on top, show on all desktops etc .. Dolphin gives you a nice multi tab, split pane file manager along with a terminal that follows you along.

On my work macbook - I can't install third-party software and the default window management is just not there. It has problems restoring windows to correct size when i switch external monitors... The experience just isn't as nice as KDE on my home laptop.

I had to install inputactions to get mac like touchpad gestures on my home kde set up but after that it just feels nicer and smoother than my office mac

saidinesh5··on FreeDroidWarn
The problem is not the propaganda, it is the businesses restricting the freedom and choices of users because of this propaganda.

So many apps even refuse to be installed on older versions of iOS/Android.

saidinesh5··on PinePhone Pro [GNU/Linux smartphone] has been discontinued
I think the convergence concept still makes sense in big corporations where most of your work happens on a VM in the cloud, while you just use your device as a thin client. Especially in places they don't even let you use a thirdparty browser >.>.

Earlier this year, I was actually tried to replace my bulky 16" MBP with a Pixel 9 for work. Android's desktop mode just wasn't there.. Maybe I will try it again next year...

All I really need was a browser and a drop down terminal anyway.

saidinesh5··on Mosh Mobile Shell
These days i quite like using shpool: https://github.com/shell-pool/shpool

I used to use mosh, tmux before but always got annoyed how they broke scrolling , searching etc.. Especially when yakuake already provides half the functionality i used to rely on tmux for..

Even more the reason to socialize and share the bill instead of ordering in/cooking for one no?
saidinesh5··on This Month in Ladybird
The issue with modern c++ is ecosystem. It is still full of legacy c++ libraries. Even though people have mostly settled on cmake, it's still common to run into friction when integrating third-party libraries. Nothing as streamlined as cargo. Vcpkg, hunter, conan, vendoring in libraries etc...

Don't get me wrong. Number of C++ libraries is far bigger than number of rust libraries. But number of modern c++ libraries is still not that high i feel. So once you have integrated legacy code into your project, there's a lot of scope for newbies to create memory leaks/double free/etc ...

saidinesh5··on This Month in Ladybird
There are plenty of embedded projects still being started with c. C++ also has a lot of demand where i am at.

The advice about career is very geography and industry dependent. Almost no one hired Node.js developers in my city back when i started.

saidinesh5··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
It sets up a VPN and routes your Android traffic through it. But because of battery optimizations etc.. it has been a little flaky for me
saidinesh5··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
Pixel stopped providing device trees, kernel history,

Samsung has been doing this for a while now.

Which are the devices/vendors that still allow / encourage this?

Even Graphene OS reported that they're in talks with some vendor... Have there been any updates towards that?

The main reason i used to root devices are:

* Get longer support/OS updates than what the vendor provided

* System level adblock using adaway

* Titanium backup

These days firefox/brave browser gets me half way through adblocking and i lost interest in the ad filled apps..

Syncing gets me good level of syncing for backup on my NAS etc .

saidinesh5··on Dwl: Dwm for Wayland
> on largely volunteer time

Are Linux desktop projects still run mostly by volunteers these days anymore?

The kernel itself is heavily funded by, contributed to by so many large companies. A lot of user space projects are all maintained by companies or maintainers who work for companies like Redhat, Canonical, Suse etc ...

Didn't Wayland itself get popular during Nokia/Intel Meego days? I remember there being automotive compositors, Jolla Phone all using wayland.

saidinesh5··on The future is not self-hosted
> Battery life Would it be any more battery life consuming than having an always on connection for push notifications? I used to have a local http/ftp file server running on my Nokia N9/N900 and even on my early Android phones back in the day. I used to still get an all day battery life.

> Imagine losing an email because you walked into the subway and your phone was unreachable the moment an SMTP server tried to connect to it.

Dont SMTP servers already retry a few times before giving up? Plus it is not like you're using the phone to host content for the whole of the internet. It would be just for your close circle usually.

I am not saying phones make the perfect servers for all kind of applications but for certain kind of workflows... I think Phones are pretty good. Our network infrastructure (NAT, firewalls etc... limited data plans etc..) is the main headache for most of these use cases. But the network infrastructure is a problem even for our laptops, home computers etc..

saidinesh5··on The future is not self-hosted
What kind of apps would you want to self host on phones?
