sacomo··on Israeli startup claims Covid-19 likely originated in a lab, willing to bet on it
The origin of the virus is worth knowing. I think the far-right in the US are trying to use "covid was made in a Chinese lab" as a way to build anti-China sentiment and also to dismiss the virus' impact in a way. Their power comes from garnering votes from people who are swayed by boogie men. Keep in mind, the US ruling class is trying to start a new Cold War with China.

Someone mentioned in another comment that some on the left were tying criticism of China with racism, and I'd like to point out that those identity politics only benefit the right. I think this link is mostly coming from some of the US liberal class (financially well off, lives aren't directly affected by election outcomes, centrists, etc.) and not from The Left (socialists, left of Bernie types).

Blame a government, not its people. There is plenty of criticism to throw at China without being racist. But if anyone is claiming that blaming China is racist then they are just as misdirected as the people that use criticism of a county to be racist against its people.

sacomo··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
I've been playing violent video games my entire life. Depictions of rape and murder still make me cringe. I can't even sit through 20 seconds of slaughterhouse footage. But I love watching statues of dictators or pro-slavery losers topple.
sacomo··on Everything We’ve Learned About Modern Economic Theory Is Wrong
Economics isn't a science.

> I call it organized religion with equations, superstition. The only way to become free of superstition is through overcoming. But you need to study. I’ve always pissed off my academic colleagues and other economists who actually believe that is real science what they are doing.

> Our mathematical models of the weather can be judged by objective reality. If I am a meteorologist and come up with a prediction that tomorrow there is going to be a heatwave in Leicester square, all we have to do is to wait until tomorrow to see if I’m right or wrong. The weather will either confirm or junk my theories about it.

> Let’s say that I have the same kind of computer model and actual machine and data mining that the meteorologist does, but instead of using it to predict the weather I use it to predict the stock exchange. And suppose that I was somebody very highly respected as a predictor of stock exchange changes and let’s say that today, I were to predict that tomorrow is going to be a major crash in the stock exchange. There might be because I predicted it! In society and in the economy, our beliefs about the phenomenon under study are part of the phenomenon under study.

sacomo··on Experts are sounding the alarm about the hidden dangers of gas stoves
Don't you understand? The manufacturing of new electric stoves to replace the billions of gas stoves currently in use will be good for the environment. Stop drawing attention to flaws in the article. /s
sacomo··on IRS says its own error sent $1,200 stimulus checks to non-Americans overseas
Not OP, but found this:

> the CARES Act may end up serving as the second largest transfer of wealth from the working class to the wealthy in our lifetimes.

sacomo··on What's Wrong with the Media
I'm not sure which country you live in, but in the US workers are constantly railroaded by their employers simply because they aren't addressing the political power that their employers hold over the worker's lives. Most Americans don't even have the political vocabulary to discuss the cause of their own oppression.

Pretending that employment isn't itself a political issue is just naive.

sacomo··on Ask HN: Is it OK to not have a “thing”?
Yes. The concept of selling yourself as a prepackaged, easy to comprehend commodity is soul crushing. You are trying to convince other people to exploit your labor. Be flexible and use the term that the person you are selling yourself to wants to hear and don't let it define you. Don't allow yourself to get married to it. Its a label to use for other people's benefit.
sacomo··on What's Wrong with the Media
I'm actually happy to hear that more people are latching onto the political aspects related to their industries. Everything we do is political even if we want to pretend otherwise. Let's end the artificial separation of work and politics once and for all. It only benefits the owner class.
sacomo··on Charles Koch Says His Partisanship Was a Mistake
Shouldn't have been allowed to have undemocratic control over that amount of political power (wealth) to begin with.

> The Takeaway: Soy is a unique food that is widely studied for its estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects on the body. Studies may seem to present conflicting conclusions about soy, but this is largely due to the wide variation in how soy is studied. Results of recent population studies suggest that soy has either a beneficial or neutral effect on various health conditions. Soy is a nutrient-dense source of protein that can safely be consumed several times a week, and is likely to provide health benefits—especially when eaten as an alternative to red and processed meat.

sacomo··on Socialism is incompatible with human nature
it's no longer the proletariat, it's the precariat.
sacomo··on Socialism is incompatible with human nature
The vast majority of any labor force is of the unskilled variety. The "bourgeois capitalist" are still in full command, even at the largest and most profitable tech firms.
sacomo··on Socialism is incompatible with human nature
This is one of the most simplististic, reductionary arguments against socialism I have read. Anyone who uses the 'human nature' argument shouldn't be taken seriously. Especially with this article's mischaraterization of socialism in the first place.

The idea that all of human nature can be boiled down to only the 'selfish' and 'greedy' traits is pretty insulting, and in this case, propagandistic.

We really shouldn't continue nurturing the selfishness and greed traits on a mass scale as we currently do.

Socialism is never about people working for free or forcing lazy people to work. Its about workers owning the means of production. Giving workers dignity and eliminating the oppresive employer - employee relationship. Slave owners also thought that they were unfairly being "forced" to give up their freedoms of owning people.

sacomo··on The Lure of Luxury
> As Will Wilkinson points out, the available data suggest that citizens of countries with liberal free-market economies are among the most satisfied, which explains why the United States, which exemplifies exactly the sort of amok consumerism that Layard and others worry about, is one of the happiest nations on Earth.

Pseudoscience.

sacomo··on Tor Browser 9.0
You can use tor also for search, reading articles, and research topics that you don't want associated in any way with your traceable internet persona (no region, ip, etc) identifiers / telemetry.

There are lots of reasons to use tor that have nothing to do with illegal sites.

Anything that you want to really keep private and never creep back into your normal day-to-day browsing experience (considering divorce, medical conditions, future vacation plans, "taboo political ideologies", etc.).

Traveling to a foreign country with questionable privacy laws?

You can access normal search engines, websites, etc. Not just .onion sites. Just avoid logging into your personal accounts.

sacomo··on Larry Wall has approved renaming Perl 6 to Raku
we are using it internally for a lot of management apps. we just deployed a new authorization frontend for graphite / carbon using cro that is handling several million daily requests (per small EC2 instance).

raku is a great language to work with for us. it is feature rich, has good abstractions, and developer friendly. if you like the syntax then give it a try.

sacomo··on A Wave of Fear in American Commerce
Only socially liberal. Economically speaking, the tech industry is more akin to the traditional economic liberalism. Not left by any stretch of the imagination.
sacomo··on No More Shiny Tomorrows: Futurism Needs to Get Real
Then use your imagination and write some new novels. People are free to write whatever they want.
sacomo··on No More Shiny Tomorrows: Futurism Needs to Get Real
The status quo understands that the `utopia` of the future (the shiny versions) will not be achieved under the current economic / political paradigms. They are afraid of losing their centers of power and for them it is easier to discourage systemic change. That is all this boils down to. Eventually we will all need to come to grips with the systemic changes required to move forward. I just hope it happens before they get their Elysium.
sacomo··on Haskell to Perl 6
Here is a slight modification that takes advantage of the hyper operator >> (»):

sacomo··on Haskell to Perl 6
We are using in in production. One of our bigger uses is a DB metrics aggregator. We use it to to pull stats from DB servers for remote clients and dump them into graphite. Sort of an agent-less monitoring platform. We've had this Perl 6 tool running 24/7 since last summer. It's now pulling from ~80 DB servers.

Another internal use is an AWS infrastructure management tool that we built. A cli util that handles the initial bootstrapping for new AWS projects and a few helper features to simplify some of our common management tasks.

Perl 6 has been pretty easy to work with. Even in situations where a module isn't available or the requirements are too complex to build it with Perl 6 within our project time constraints, its facilities as a glue language really make it simple to work with external tools, modules, libs.

If you like the Perl 6 syntax then I'd recommend just spending some time with it. It's stable and fast enough for regular use now.
