s_ting765··on Delete tests
Integration tests make unit tests absolutely redundant.
s_ting765··on AI crawlers, fetchers are blowing up websites; Meta, OpenAI are worst offenders
Can confirm META's bots aggressively scraping some of my internet-facing services have but they do respect robots.txt.
s_ting765··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected (2021)
A CI is really just a "serverless" application.
s_ting765··on AI is different
I find it funny that almost every talking point made about AI is done in future tense. Most of the time without any presentation of evidence supporting those predictions.
s_ting765··on The Dollar Is Dead
Stablecoins !== USD.

Also USD's circulation in US markets has nothing to do with maintaining reserve currency status.

s_ting765··on The Dollar Is Dead
> If the dollar goes down it takes the entire world with it.

This has happened before. GFC 2008 comes to mind.

s_ting765··on Secure boot certificate rollover is real but probably won't hurt you
I have a HP BIOS that doesn't go into setup mode (required to enroll certs) so I have no choice but to deal with the MS shim.
s_ting765··on The HTML Hobbyist (2022)
That adaline.ai link is not just a marketing page. If you had scrolled further down this would be immediately clear to you. And even if it was a purely marketing page, it would have missed the mark by a long shot.

My idealism of what a good website ought to look like or how it should communicate doesn't have to correlate to reality for my opinion to be valid.

s_ting765··on The HTML Hobbyist (2022)
I disagree. It's badass, revolutionary even, to communicate with simple html, javascript and css in 2025!
s_ting765··on The HTML Hobbyist (2022)
Open the network tab on F12. Or for giggles try accessing that UI from mobile.
s_ting765··on The HTML Hobbyist (2022)
Take this website for example. https://www.adaline.ai/

Some vibe coder saw nothing wrong with this. This is the future of the web.

s_ting765··on Nobody knows how to build with AI yet
Talk is cheap. Give your LLM/agent your badge and let it turn in 100% of your job.
s_ting765··on Nobody knows how to build with AI yet
LLMs are not compilers. They can't be deterministic. A better comparison is an autocorrect on steroids.

And I don't think there's anything to get over about them. They are useful but people elevate their significance too much over what they actually are.

s_ting765··on Nobody knows how to build with AI yet
Junior engineers will be lost if they don't take the time to read the code generated by the LLM and really understand it. This is an objective truth. It has nothing to do with boomer takes.
s_ting765··on Shutting Down Clear Linux OS
I maintain a custom kernel built on top of their patches optimized for performance that I now don't know what to do with.
s_ting765··on LLM Inevitabilism
Repetition is an effective tool in communication. That's why the AI hype marketing machine is not coming to a stop anytime soon.
s_ting765··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
Sounds like the death knell for Open AI. They can't outswim the FAANG sharks. Once Microsoft is out, it's over for them.
s_ting765··on Why I don't ride the AI Hype Train
I was frustrated by the author's article but for reasons different than yours. Their title is clickbait and implies a personal viewpoint. I kept reading to see any personal reasons for why they dislike AI. Everything they mention you can google in 5 mins and read for yourself what other people think about AI.

The only personal reason comes at the end where he says he would never log in to use an AI product. The entire rant could have been a tweet.

s_ting765··on Most RESTful APIs aren't really RESTful
The DELETE verb exists, there's no reason not to use it.
s_ting765··on Basically Everyone Should Be Avoiding Docker
Old man yells at modern packaging solutions.
s_ting765··on Building untrusted container images safely at scale
Keep docker. As long as you do not expose volumes back to the host system, it is reasonably safe (despite the misconceptions it comes with good security defaults).

If you want to further lock this down, there are many tools such as apparmor and seccomp that you can add custom profiles with but a good starting point would be:

docker run --security-opt no-new-privileges --cap-drop ALL untrusted-image

s_ting765··on Microsoft extends free Windows 10 security updates into 2026
Don't fix what's not broken. Get a cheap Raspberry Pi and configure pihole to block ads/malware for their home network.
s_ting765··on Why is the Rust compiler so slow?
OP could have skipped all this by doing the compilation with cache on the host system and copying the compiled statically linked binary back to the docker image build.
s_ting765··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Which nuclear sites?

s_ting765··on Andrej Karpathy: Software in the era of AI [video]
Given the plethora of programming languages that exist today, I'm not worried at all about AI taking over SWE jobs.
s_ting765··on Scrappy – Make little apps for you and your friends
Cool but no link for the source code negates entire point of sharing apps.
s_ting765··on Generative AI coding tools and agents do not work for me
Author makes very good points. Someone has to be responsible for the AI generated code, and if it's not going to be you then no one should feel obligated to pull the auto-generated PR.
s_ting765··on Ask HN: Anyone struggling to get value out of coding LLMs?
I completely agree with you that the coders who are "smitten" by LLMs are just inexperienced. I personally find that LLMs get subtle improvements in capability over time and it's usually worthwhile to check in on the progress from time to time. Even if it's just for fun.
s_ting765··on The Future of Flatpak
Semantics. Ubuntu is an alternative to those other "top-tier" distros.
s_ting765··on The Future of Flatpak
I'm glad flaptaks are getting more adoption. Application distribution needs to move from distributions because they suck at it. Due to no fault of their own. Developers should have the option to distribute their apps without middlemen.
