I haven't seen anyone cite the project costs, so I think we all are
s1artibartfast··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
The showstopper is spending $1,000 of tax payer money for what could be accomplished with $10.
s1artibartfast··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
All those pumping stations are already connected to a grid that provides consistent power sourced from dozens of power plants.
s1artibartfast··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
This is simply not true. I-beam's 4 ft deep, arched over a 100 ft wide canal would not be the same cost as a ground Mount system.

No commercial solar farms use large members to save on labor costs.

Standard ground mount equipment also uses pre-engineered metal, just of much lighter weight due to supporting a small fraction of the load.

I think it's the exact opposite. If someone is going to propose a project with costs of hundreds if not billions of taxpayer dollars, the burden is on them to provide concrete numbers.

Sure buddy... All I'm hearing is cope from someone who was making dumb points before I even joined the conversation. The best you could come up with for a personal threshold is "I haven't seen it".

Well I haven't seen a reason to continue, so I will not check or respond again.

Thats true for any stalking animal, right? They know they see the prey but are not seen, and if seen, they know the prey will flee.
s1artibartfast··on How high is current immigration to the United States in historical perspective?
No, many people people are born in the usa, having never lived elsewhere.
s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Yeah, I lost interest after you didn't answer the question twice and still haven't. The best you got around to is that repeating it back to me.

You have no goal post so what's the point.

s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Can you have theory of behavior without theory of mind? I think so, almost by definition.

A dog knows that the cat will run when the dog charges. Is that theory of mind?

s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
I wouldnt let them drive my car or manage my finances!
s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
The post you origionally replied to included examples of ways humans are different from all other animals.

You introduced the word "special".

s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
What do you disagree about?

i read 'somehow' in the first post as sarcastic, and think they are intentionally mocking religion in the second.

If they are claiming we're not special, I'm asking what they think would qualify, it they think it is even possible to be special.

I think many people use snark as a cheap rhetorical trick to be critical without advancing an alternative position.

s1artibartfast··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
Maybe without perpetual distraction some of those problems wouldn't be as bad.
s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
I think you are being sarcastic and avoiding the question. Is there anything you think could make a species special?
s1artibartfast··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
If there is truly nothing as you say, there is nothing for PE to buy, and no problem. If there is nothing to sell of value, what stops new dentists from seamlessly opening an office?
s1artibartfast··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
How does it define PE?
s1artibartfast··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
What do you think 'special' means in that sentence? What differences would make something special?

Then we have different definitions. Discrimination is a matter of bias and motive. Statistics are irrelevant.

For some definitions of systemic discrimination, you may look for an effect, but even that doesn't rule out two way discrimination.

If a black person is lynched by a racist for their skin color, and a white person is lynched by a racist for their skin color, there is still a hell of a lot of discriminatory behavior happening.

If you personally hold that events themselves cannot be discriminatory, even if they are motivated by racial bias or malice, you will continually run into disagreement with others.

The overwhelming majority of people and legal systems recognize that events can be discriminatory. If you fire someone and provide their skin color as the reason, you will lose that discrimination lawsuit in every state in the US, no matter your statistical fetish.

s1artibartfast··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
No disproportionate number of men are required for discrimination to be going on. Its not a competition.

Discrimination can occur at the individual level. If I fire someone the color of their skin, but the numbers balance out somewhere, I still committed an act of discrimination.

Also,I dont care about their back story. I suspect you and I have very different understanding of truth if you think them having said something offensive means everything else they say is false.

That sounds exhausting. I'll judge the truth of a given statement by its contents.

Cool. Give me a call when our government isn't wasteful and destructive, then we can talk about the relative benefits of taxes versus charity.

Until then, I'm going to look at the real world and conclude that charities do massively more good

Pretending that reality is other than it is nothing short of delusion, living in a fantasy.

These tweets all seem extremely reasonable and resonates with my experience.

White males don't have a monopoly on discrimination but it certainly exists.

When I worked at a fortune 50 company part of my annual bonus was dependent on how many minorities I hired. When I was job shopping I was told directly by recruiters that white males should not apply, but if I know any minorities to send them their way

If these things don't count as discrimination, I don't know what would

Sure, that is no accident. Elon seeks out markets ripe for disruptive engineering innovation.

His approach probably wouldn't work as well if you threw him in as CEO of a random company like JC penny or Pizza Hut. Other CEO's are good at different things - like squeezing the extra 0.1% out of a 40 year old brand or product line

Now I'm thinking about him firing the pizza cooks and bringing in a crack team of engineers to redesign the concept of Pizza from first principles.

You mean fund ICE and build some more concentration camps?

Approximately 1% of the federal budget is infrastructure. There are huge advantages to donating to a charity that actually does something productive instead of the federal waste machine.
