s-phi-nl··on Google Chrome for Linux goes stable
I can't find the link, but I know the openSuSE build service has a repository with the latest Firefox for SuSE because I use it on my computer.
s-phi-nl··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I would like some way to "flag" a dead post for revival. Every so often I see a dead link that in my opinion should not be dead. You could use the flag link on dead posts for this.
s-phi-nl··on Poll: Getting to know you better ...
Could you provide a link to the coding test? It sounds interesting.
s-phi-nl··on Poll: Getting to know you better ...
Maybe that both juggling and playing the piano require good coordination?
s-phi-nl··on Poll: Getting to know you better ...
I clicked "Don't play piano, right handed, juggle" because I have never had a piano lesson (okay, maybe exactly one). When I took a piano audition taken by all applying music majors, however, I was told, "You play the piano better than anyone yet who has never had piano lessons." It has something to do with having a piano in the house for the past 10 years (my sister plays it).

s-phi-nl··on Making Sense of Python Unicode
A good tutorial on Python Unicode is http://diveintopython3.org/strings.html. It's also my favorite explanation of Unicode in general.

BTW, you can get italics by surrounding your text with asterisks (*).
s-phi-nl··on Opera joins in Jobs v Flash argument
I've been using Firefox with Flash disabled for the last couple of days because of the obnoxious flash adds on m-w.com. I keep being surprised by how widely Flash is used.
s-phi-nl··on Total victory for open source software in a patent lawsuit

Did you did consult the following list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_in_the_Caribbea...?
s-phi-nl··on Google in talks to buy ITA
Given that Google does rewrite the code of many companies that they buy, it wouldn't be surprising if they did rewrite the ITA code.
s-phi-nl··on My how far you have come, Apple.
This reminds me of this article about the iPad and Steve Wozniak: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1247922

s-phi-nl··on Thousands of webcam images have been found in the school district being sued
I wish more people knew Latin, too. My interest in languages is one of the reasons both that I am here and that I have a φ in my username. I posted the translation because I thought doing so would teach the most people a useful Latin phrase which I didn't know.

Perhaps I should have posted a link to the Wikipedia article instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quis_custodiet_ipsos_custodes

[edit: added first two sentences]

s-phi-nl··on The Open Secret
This reminds me of John Harrison's invention of the chronometer. In both cases, a modest Briton brought a solution to an "impossible problem" to the officials, who rejected it because it was too simple to be correct.

(John Harrison also had the problem that one of the officials came up with a rival, astronomical solution before his was accepted.)

s-phi-nl··on Teach Yourself Programming in 10 Years.
I find both Google and searchyc useful. When one doesn't find what I'm looking for, the other usually does.
s-phi-nl··on Basics of the Unix Philosophy
This and the post by silentbicycle above [1] make the point that GNOME abandoned the Unix philosophy to provide a more Windows-style monolithic GUI program.

s-phi-nl··on Bombax: OS X Web Development Platform
Why is Objective-C so unsafe? From what little I know about it, I see no reason why it should be less safe than, say, Smalltalk.

If Objective-C is the second-least safe language, what is the least safe language?
