ryndbfsrw··on Tesla Blown Away as Renault Dominates Europe’s July EV Sales Party
I didn’t actually read the article. Every Tesla submission on HN usually has someone white knighting and this was true to form

ryndbfsrw··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
The best one I've tried is the Nilkin brand. As to the Apple pencil, I'm on ~9 months of use and the nib feels the same as the spare that came in the box when I got the pencil so I don't have reason to believe its damaging it

I didn't know about this before I bought an iPad. I recently added a paper-textured screen protector (similar to Paperlike) and now I can't stop using it. I really recommend it for those who have an Apple Pencil - its great

Add to this the meta-problem this creates. Right now, there's trust in the industry to not cut corners which is one of the reasons so many choose to fly. If that trust erodes (even slightly) it is difficult to gauge what the impact would be. I remember an AA exec saying they make their profit on the last 4/5 people per flight. Combo of thin margins, high gearing and the industry is exposed to even small shocks in demand.
ryndbfsrw··on Stocks Are Recovering While the Economy Collapses
Agreed. I should have included political will as part of the infrastructure. I was highlighting how the Fed is geared in such a way that makes it very difficult for it to automatically deliver support to anything other than large institutions/finance etc given the patchy nature of US benefit systems. If political class deemed it necessary it would exist but they don’t so it doesn't.

Completely agree. The Fed is one of the few institutions that has bipartisan support so its allowed to fulfil its mandate and the 'plumbing' so to speak works well when its trying to pump money into markets. But as we've seen getting money into people's pockets is more challenging in the USA as that bit of infrastructure wasn't seen as needing investment due to the way USA normally reacts to market shocks. (And by infrastructure I think of benefit systems running 50 year old bits of cobol, sending benefit payments via cheques, patchworks of state benefits instead of universal coverage etc.)

3.85 million more Americans filed for unemployment last week and the stock market barely moved. Its because your Fed is printing money to buy up assets and corporate junk bonds.

This is also the sign of the kind of plumbing that is baked into the US system - protect capital when things go belly up and allow labor to hit the reset button through unemployment and wage cuts. Flood the market with cheap credit and then eventually growth comes back. It’s a rehash of the financial crisis response because it’s the only sort of response the USA is configured for.

ryndbfsrw··on 2M chickens to be killed in US processing plants due to lack of employees
Squint really hard with me... From an environmental point of view I think its encouraging there is so much headway we can collectively make by reducing waste than hoping new tech and infrastructure will allow the same level of consumption

ryndbfsrw··on R 4.0
kdb+ is the only tool I've come across that solidly managed to outperform data.table for data processing. I have huge respect for good Q programmers
ryndbfsrw··on R 4.0
I'm so used to using data.table to import data I forgot this was still a thing
ryndbfsrw··on R 4.0
If I understand, does this mean on windows when I've copied a file location I would no longer have to replace backslash in the file path with double back slash or forward slashes? Or am I off-piste?
ryndbfsrw··on The next outbreak? We're not ready. Ted talk by Bill Gates (2015)
I try to imagine the counter-scenario where leaders had done the correct thing but because they did the right thing and a spread never occurred we collectively boot them out of office because nothing bad happened and criticize them for 'overreacting' when that is exactly what is needed for a pandemic.

I am sympathetic to why nothing changed and no one listened. good risk management shows up as nothing bad happening. Heroes who avert disaster don’t get statues.

ryndbfsrw··on Mathematica v12.1
I've tried it for modeling tasks but I struggled with the sort of basic data manipulation that can be done within pandas/data.table. I can quite comfortably work with 100-million line CSVs using data.table on a standard laptop but Mathematica wasn't even able to ingest the file. I don’t disagree its technically very impressive but there's no point in having these amazing features if it stumbles with such basic tasks.
