ryanobjc··on Sam Bankman-Fried is ‘under supervision’ in Bahamas?
He’s one of EA highest profiles adherents. EA style thinking permeates SBF.

This is the world EAs want - the one they’ve been advocating for a long time.

It’s just in this iteration it failed. If the chance of success was higher than X% vs the risk of failing, it was all worth it. That’s the kind of morally bankrupt philosophy EA pushes.

ryanobjc··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
I dunno man, to take your comment at face value requires me to presuppose that medical researchers are just really bad at their job. I have a sneaking feeling that if it was as easy as you say it may be, it would have been discovered already. That's the basic kind of regression analysis that if it showed something significant, someone would have a slam dunk paper, and probably even a nobel prize or whatever lined up...
ryanobjc··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
Not talking to you specifically, but sure glad that because a few people are faking it we can ignore a huge human health issue instead!

Wow that sure takes a load off, time to relax and drink some inflammation increasing alcohol!

ryanobjc··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
I'm glad that you're figuring something out, but alas the prescription may not be so easy for many.

So, can you come over and cook for me? Because reduced executive function sure makes it hard to cook! Or even meal plan!

Also you'll have to figure something out for my incredibly picky 4 year old... good luck!

I came here to read and basically make this comment.

The GP was very dismissive - or at least cast FUD on the whole notion.

We are in this place where we are the best experts about our own body, yet at the same time that experience and knowledge is being cast doubt on because ... why exactly? Why is it so hard to take people seriously?

Other comments in here seem to be basically like "well you were fragile/brain weird before so whatever I guess".

Just remember, every person who is struggling after a bout of COVID and not feeling right... that is a person, that could be your friend, parent, sibling, loved one...

Ultimately the proper response imo is "that is really concerning and we should do more research" rather than "well this happens after every illness". Which is "true" but also not really true, simply because long covid is way more prevalent than lingering symptoms after EB, the flu, colds, etc.

ryanobjc··on How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing
1 person and their lawyers held up bike lanes for YEARS with lawsuits.

The city isn't a monolith, its not all 1 person, and fixing it isn't always easy: state and federal laws have primacy over certain things, and lets face it "permitting reforms" is hardly the ballot box getter.

But things have gotten better, the parket situation got a lot better, new bike lines, walkable streets, etc. All it took was a deadly global pandemic! Yay progress!

ryanobjc··on How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing
There's been a lot of articles lately talking about how all those previously easy to live areas have become less livable due to... well people moving there.

The root cause is demand > supply. That's it. Everything gets more expensive, and those who can get paid a lot do, and everyone else has to make do.

Texas yes, but tell me about Austin... and how it has all the same problems of the bay area now, entirely because people moved there.

ryanobjc··on Show HN: I'm building an open-source Amazon
I used to work in Amazon Supply Chain Systems Software, many years ago. Yes a key component of what amazon does is software, but... that is not all what supply chain systems are. They are human processes, and physical things.

There exists many systems that lets you take orders online and put them in the mail. There are not many systems that lets you cheaply ship things to users in like 1-2 days.

Best of luck!

ryanobjc··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Well the shows were written before wokeness was invented, so we're gonna need a new theory.
ryanobjc··on The Big [Censored] Theory
So here's the thing, is that joke making fun of a Chinese restaurant, or is it making fun of racist americans who make comments like that?

The reality is most Americans have someone like that in their family. Read the rest of the scene: Leonard is distinctly uncomfortable, tries to politely correct the wordage, the comment is lost and the originator moves on.

In any case, are you saying that... words that offend you should be removed from media? You know, like... some kind of... woke person who is really sensitive to racism?

ryanobjc··on The Big [Censored] Theory
I've done a studio tour of TBBT set, and they have mics set up for audience recording.

I'm not sure what your "worth the hassle" is about, they rented the same sound stage for YEARS to record the show. They're hardly tearing it down and setting it up daily!

ryanobjc··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Absolutely wrong, the founders knew it, you should know it, everyone knows it.

There's a big difference between using the rule of law to shape what can and cannot be said or sold or published. Compared to different private publishers/agents/etc deciding what they wish to do. The marketplace solves the latter problem - and it has!

People are getting caught up in the "chicken" joke, but if you read the read of the article you'll see that crime dramas had to be re-shot so the "side of justice" wins in the end.

What kind of anodyne cultural bullshit is that? Only the good guys win - BY STATE LAW.

So absolutely not, the US and China are not even remotely the same. To suggest so is so ridiculous offensive it opens one up to accusations that they are a Chinese sock puppet... and it's a totally reasonable opinion to hold!

ryanobjc··on What We Gain from a Good Bookstore
Isn’t this argument a fancier version of “civilization is dumb”?
ryanobjc··on What We Gain from a Good Bookstore
It’s really interesting - we’ve seemingly given up on curation and discovery on the internet. There’s just too much spam and scam to really make it work. Take your average recipe website: it includes multiple paragraphs of irrelevant “background story” to delay you seeing the recipe for more ad views.

Whereas books and libraries have none of that cruft. If you want to learn something the library (or bookstore) is a much better place - the books don’t come with dynamic ads and affiliate links to encourage you to buy something.

ryanobjc··on What We Gain from a Good Bookstore
There’s a few areas where paper is vastly superior:

Doesn’t require power to operate

The tactile experience is top notch, and makes for fast seeking in the book

You can sell or lend the book without permission from someone else

Edit: also books don’t have dynamic tracking or affiliate links or scams for getting you to buy something - this is more apropos to websites. Still though, I hear people say that long form is dead and internet video/short form, or even blogs is the way real knowledge is passed on.

ryanobjc··on U.S. public health agencies aren't ‘following the science,’ officials say
That isn't it at all, the question isn't "does natural immunity happen", but "what's the overall population cost of natural immunity".

Long covid, and greater impact on certain individuals were well known by that point. Just saying "let 'er rip, go natural immunity" isn't the responsible move. Perhaps you're ok with the risks for you, but faulting a health officer for taking a different more conservative position is hardly a reasonable opinion.

ryanobjc··on How Google got to rolling Linux releases for Desktops
Not to mention many of those things don't work outside the rarified environment that is a fully managed VLAN.

Regarding "security", remember plenty of security is things like auditing, remote logs, ability of remote admins to control machines, etc, etc. It's ultimately all boring, but essential, large fleet management stuff.

ryanobjc··on How Google got to rolling Linux releases for Desktops
I think there's a big misunderstanding as to what exactly gLinux _IS_.

Nearly every large company I've worked at worked hard to standardize the dev environment. Ensuring the right set of dev tools (and more) is available on every machine. It's not as simple as 'apt-get install build-essential' and you're done. For example many large companies use perforce, which also has a licensing requirement. Google in particular has a large set of custom binaries, remote file systems, unified login (think krb but maybe not exactly that), unified management, etc, etc.

That is what gLinux is. This isn't something you're going to want or need. In fact it doesn't even run outside of the Google hard wired VLANs really (for setup).

There are a LOT of net benefits for much of google to being on gLinux. It means, for example, that nearly every product works on Linux - google docs, spreadsheet, meet, etc. That's a huge win. Not only that, they are on par with Windows or Mac support (thanks browser as a platform).

ryanobjc··on SEC rejects Grayscale Bitcoin ETF application [pdf]
CME futures are nothing you described above. Their liquidity is very poor, with tons of gaps in the price chart, and maybe like max 500M of vol a day, on the highest vol day, but really more like 120M vol a day.

The reality is a lot of the vol on btc is due to liquidations. On one hand, volatility, on the other, crypto liquidations are much more fair than stock market margin.

ryanobjc··on Chesa Boudin Recalled by San Francisco Voters
Who is that exactly? Which persons. Please substantiate your claims.
ryanobjc··on Chesa Boudin Recalled by San Francisco Voters
I dunno man, seems like he's a strong law and order DA. The only problem is he's applying the laws to people who normally get to do whatever they want, so yeah a well funded recall campaign.

Oh yeah, and those people who normally get to break the law with impunity are the cops.

ryanobjc··on Chesa Boudin Recalled by San Francisco Voters
Can you explain why you want to do the other thing, when the results aren't really working?
ryanobjc··on Why I Quit Google’s WebAssembly Team, and How It Made Me Sick
“Seems very unbalanced”…. As in the author isn’t presenting all sides because it’s a personal experience narrative?

Or are you using a sly way of calling them crazy?

ryanobjc··on UST “Stablecoin” at $.43
You already do use stablecoins, you use BankOfAmericaDollar (or WellsFargoDollar or...), which is fully convertible 1:1 to USD - some exceptions may apply. Your BankOfAmericaDollar isn't backed by currency, it's backed by assets with variable values, and there's an insurance fund that may cover some of your deposits, again limits and exceptions may apply.

Unless you have tender in your hands, or a fedwire account, you don't actually have 'real currency'.

ryanobjc··on UST “Stablecoin” at $.43
That's not what happened.
ryanobjc··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
Because people can, and do, redeem USDT -> USD via wires.

As long as people can redeem, then there's no major concern.

ryanobjc··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
Except that you basically have a photograph to the deed of your house. The deed to your house is not normally considered a bearer certificate, so if you lose it, the property tax office can issue you another one.

In fact, your possession of the deed doesn't really entitle you to anything. While you assume that law enforcement would accept it as proof, they do not have to, and ultimately judges and the county registration system decides who owns what. And it's not even all that straightforward in some cases.

So sure, your deed to your house. Okay.

ryanobjc··on Why I’m skeptical of “steelmanning”
Dude Finnegans Wake is waiting for you. It’s right there.

No need to pray to god (GPT-41) for enlightenment. It’s already all around you.

ryanobjc··on Ask HN: Am I going insane or is there genuinely no value in blockchain tech?
So, how much do you trust your own intelligence? When has it failed you?

I think you have too much hubris. What do these people know that you do not? What non technical things do they know that you do not, that totally change the context and the reasoning behind these solutions?

ryanobjc··on Ask HN: Am I going insane or is there genuinely no value in blockchain tech?
Yet if they are true often enough, then the use case makes sense.

Also don't forget insider problems. Every major financial institution has massive insider threat problemss.
