ryanjodonnell··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2019)
Cleary | Full Stack Engineer | San Francisco, CA | ONSITE, REMOTE | https://www.gocleary.com/ Cleary is building an ‘operating system of the office’ based on the kind of internal tools that companies like Airbnb, Twitter, Dropbox, Google, Uber, etc build for their own employees. We're seeing great traction - we're working with companies like Square, Flexport and LendingHome, and just raised a large seed round from top tier investors.

We're assembling an A+ team - currently just 8 people with backgrounds from Twitter, Microsoft, Cornell, Carnegie Melon, YC, etc.

You’ll get to work directly with our experienced entrepreneurial team, which includes three second-time founders with two prior exits. In this role you will wear multiple hats, reporting directly to the CTO, and will have an opportunity to take on a leadership position (if desired) as we scale.

ryanjodonnell··on Bootcamps vs. College (2016)
Prob the best use of time if you’re trying to optimize for a career as a developer would be to go study CS for 2 years at a top school, then drop out and do a bootcamp for 3 months. Best of both worlds!

This is exactly what China has done with its tech industry - ban the foreign competition and allow the local companies to flourish. Not a bad strategy if you have a sufficiently large market.

ryanjodonnell··on Ask HN: Engineers from non-CS background, how did you pivot into ML/AI?
We gotta stop saying 'FAANG' when MSFT is the arguably the top tech company around these days.
ryanjodonnell··on Ask HN: Engineers from non-CS background, how did you pivot into ML/AI?
Random side note, but when is the 'FAANG' acronym going to die? MSFT is killing it, prob the top tech company around these days. Needs to be included in that list.

ryanjodonnell··on HBR study: having your smartphone nearby takes its toll on your thinking
“The results were striking: individuals who completed these tasks while their phones were in another room performed the best, followed by those who left their phones in their pockets. In last place were those whose phones were on their desks. We saw similar results when participants’ phones were turned off: people performed worst when their phones were nearby, and best when they were away in a separate room. Thus, merely having their smartphones out on the desk led to a small but statistically significant impairment of individuals’ cognitive capacity — on par with effects of lacking sleep.”
ryanjodonnell··on Why Hasn’t the World Been Destroyed in a Nuclear War Yet?
From the wiki: "Unfortunately, as krogan society became more technologically advanced, so did their weaponry. The end result is that they destroyed their homeworld in a nuclear war ... The krogan were reduced to primitive warring clans struggling to survive a nuclear winter of their own creation, a state that continued until they were discovered by the salarians two thousand years later."
ryanjodonnell··on Why Hasn’t the World Been Destroyed in a Nuclear War Yet?
In the game series "Mass Effect" there is a race called the Krogans which destroy themselves in nuclear war at about 1950s era technology levels, leaving their world completely destroyed and in nuclear winter.

When you come across them in the game it's been many generations since that event and they still havent recovered and only get into space because other aliens come by and "lift them up".

Would not be surprised if this is the fate of humanity as well

ryanjodonnell··on Chefs and Soldiers Make Good Product Managers
Usually I enjoy articles from firstround, but this article is kind of clickbaity. I see what they're getting at here but if their claim that chefs and soldiers make the best product managers is true... then most PMs be would be former chefs and soldiers.
ryanjodonnell··on Summer Reading List
I would add "The Three Body Problem" and following two books in its trilogy to the list. Sci-fi series by Liu Cixin. Won the Hugo award and is recommended by Obama and Zuck. I felt so small after reading that one :)
ryanjodonnell··on Despite money and effort, homelessness in SF as bad as ever
A homeless woman spit on me in SOMA a few months ago for no apparent reason. Just walked up to me squawking like a bird and spit on me. Probably was on something.

My immediate reaction was to jump out of my chair and aggressively move towards her - I'm actually not sure what I would've done next because it all happened so quickly. Probably shoved her? That seems like a legitimate response to someone walking up and spitting on you. Thankfully I was with a few friends and they restrained me before I could do anything and the woman ran away unscathed.

The entire experience left me so confused. I am legitimately concerned that if I had shoved her I would've been considered the 'bad guy' here be the absurd SF hyper liberals and could've ended up in jail been fired if my employer found out.

What are you supposed to do in this situation? There needs to be some sort of disincentive to this behavior but it seems like the way things are in SF it's actually socially acceptable behavior.

ryanjodonnell··on Twitter’s head of diversity is leaving and its chief HR officer has already left
At the end of the day, I just want to work with the best people for the job.

Evidence has shown that without a commitment to diversity, some of the best people can be overlooked or passed over during the interview process, and some evidence shows that diverse teams in fact outperform non-diverse teams.

ryanjodonnell··on Twitter’s head of diversity is leaving and its chief HR officer has already left
Twitter engineer here.

Our engineering culture is actually pretty great - diversity is something we strive for and have made great improvements at, but definitely not at the expense of hiring talented people.
