rx_tx··on I2c-USB-hub: An i2C Controllable USB 2.0 Hub
Unfortunately, this is not an ideal design.

- Most USB hub chips can be strapped/hard wired configured, or controllable by i2c already directly. Funnily enough this chip isn't, but is extremely cheap (less than 24 cents!).

- The "port enable" feature on this design only controls VBUS (power pin of each connector), not the hub itself, so on a self-powered device it may not actually disconnect the device if it doesn't need VBUS to operate.

rx_tx··on CT scans of coffee-making equipment
Correct, it's produced as a cool nerdy promo by a CT scan machine company (https://www.scanofthemonth.com/about)

Every article from them does pretty well on HN, understandably so.

rx_tx··on At Taser maker Axon, ex-staffers say loyalty meant being tased or tattooed
I think the issue is less execs getting tased, but more peer pressuring any and all employees to "ride the lightning" and get tased, lest they be shunned as not being "all in". (similar for getting company logo tattoos as the article mentions.)
rx_tx··on 2023 Paid VPN Relationship and Corporate VPN Ownership Map
I don't know if it was edited since your comment, but Mozilla VPN is in there (with an arrow pointing to Mullvad)
rx_tx··on Using JTAG to Dump the Xbox’s Boot ROM

rx_tx··on ‘X’ Sign Abruptly Removed from Twitter HQ Following Complaints
I mean from the sign company, it was an easy/good job... As long as Elon actually pays the invoice.
rx_tx··on ‘X’ Sign Abruptly Removed from Twitter HQ Following Complaints
That's a good thing. Judging from the two video tweets I saw about the sign, its brightness at night was absolutely insane, lighting up the building across the screen with aggressive flashing/pulsing white light.
rx_tx··on People in 1920s Berlin nightclubs flirted via pneumatic tubes (2017)
The one I go to these days (US-CA) discontinued used of the tubes, but they're still present in the ceiling.
rx_tx··on NASA Reveals a List of the Best Air-Cleaning Plants for Your Home
This is a rehash of a study NASA did in 1989 [1].

The report still advises activated carbon filters (Usually combined with HEPA for particulates) as the proper way of cleaning up large volumes of air i.e. you'd need a lot of plants to have a meaningful result in a regular home.

rx_tx··on Bypassing Readout Protection in Nordic Semiconductor Microcontrollers
Thanks. I guess the top link pointing to the team's homepage and not the specific article is definitely confusing.
rx_tx··on Intel exiting the PC business as it stops investment in the Intel NUC
The modern ones have thunderbolt 3 or 4, so you have to get a dongle, but you can get a lot more IO going (including 10G)
rx_tx··on Intel exiting the PC business as it stops investment in the Intel NUC
I had a 6th gen and now a 11th gen NUC (both used) as a little home server to run docker/plex . (since the intel chips can do transcoding pretty well). Runs so well, cool and quiet in a closet shelf.

They will be missed, I guess I'll have to look at similar devices from non-Intel in the future.

rx_tx··on Bypassing Readout Protection in Nordic Semiconductor Microcontrollers
Unless I misunderstood the article [1], it describes this very same HW-based method of power glitching the chip at a crucial time using an external STM32F0 controlling the Vcore going to the nRF. Basically preventing it from checking if it's correctly locked or not at boot.

After managing to connect through glitching, they dump the FW, then turn off APPROTECT, reflash, and have open debug access.

>Our attack setup thus consists out of 1) a transistor connected to the CPU core supply voltage and ground, 2) a dev board to control the glitch timing, and 3) a debug probe to try to access the debug interface.

rx_tx··on A curated list of uBlock origin filters
Another really useful rule I like is for disabling the recommendation overlay that shows up on youtube when you pause a video, which is really annoying.

rx_tx··on Scientists conduct first test of a wireless cosmic ray navigation system
Looks like they're different. OP is using muons (Cosmic rays) and the Royal Navy one is using some quantic properties to track movements more precisely (fancier dead reckoning)
rx_tx··on FAA Requires Secondary Flight Deck Barrier
Previous discussion (not a lot of activity on it) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36334796
rx_tx··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
I didn't want to buzz market the place but that's correct.
rx_tx··on FAA to require secondary cockpit barrier on commercial airplanes
Examples of implementation (it's like a net to close off the front plane door area) https://www.alpa.org/advocacy/flight-deck-barriers

I've actually seen some airlines position a beverage cart across the entrance of the aisle on the first row to block everyone, while pilots are opening the cockpit door to use the lavatory in flight. There also was a flight attendant behind the cart to tell anyone to back off/turn around.

rx_tx··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
I know which place you're talking about, and their stuff is actually sort of unique to me at least, in the sense that there's no broth in any of the ramen, but more of an oily sauce that you mix with the noodles. It's actually really amazing, and worth at least some wait to me. (and a Japanese opening a bay area branch tends to form lines).
rx_tx··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
Yes, I had to run the script several times, but it eventually edited and got rid of stuff that was super old. Basically every single comment made by me is gone (which I wanted). I ran it before the blackout though, not sure how it would work with Reddit in its current state.
rx_tx··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
Look into Shreddit [1] which does that for you. It needs API access though, so make sure to do it before June 30th...

rx_tx··on Framework Laptop 16
It's possible they weren't able to source 16" panels in that ratio? (at a price that worked). I wouldn't exclude a different ration screen in the future maybe?
rx_tx··on Another reason to stop using gas
Not only are the NOx levels much higher like the article states, PM2.5 particulates also go through the roof (>100-200, or way higher without ventilation, observed with a PM2.5 sensor) from the flame as well as the oil/nonstick pans heating up.

A lot of people don't even turn on their vent hood when cooking, or the hood doesn't have enough flow rate. After showing my parents the particulates that were emitted during cooking from the flame and oil heating, they turn on the hood at max speed every day and open the window when possible, and it makes a big difference.

rx_tx··on Make Something Wonderful: Steve Jobs in his own words
Apple gave its employees a hardcover version of that book, and they're being sold for stupid money on ebay to collectors/fans. ($200-1000+)
rx_tx··on The collapse of companies like SVB is triggering demand for corporate merch
Well the article does mention FTX hats and bobbleheads, so the highest profile crypto companies at least do have some "valuable" swag.
rx_tx··on Lo-Fi ATC
This reminds me of SomaFM's 1033 which plays music overlaid with SF public safety radio traffic.

rx_tx··on Almost-great Raspberry Pi alternative is missing one key feature
tl;dr: it's missing a Wifi/BT module. It can be added to one of the M.2 slots on the board, and antennas plugged into it.
rx_tx··on Russia is launching a mission to give stranded ISS crew members a ride home
I wonder if the hits to each of the two capsules came from the massive pile of extra 1500+ debris generated during their pointless ASAT test in November 2021. [1]

rx_tx··on Moonwalkers: Shoes that make you walk faster (pre-order)
> Military-grade, multiple redundancy electronics hardware, running our in-house OS with jet propulsion level stability add the final layer of peace of mind.

That is a lot of buzz-words, and sort of hinting at JPL but failing.

At the end of the video, the exploded view shows a crazy gear train, synchronizing those 10 wheels per shoe sounds tough.
