Europe is a big place. For example, if you are a farmer living in Finnish countryside, good luck surviving without a personal car. Lots of city folks also have relatives or summer cottages in the countryside, and own some cheap car just to reach them. And for families living in smaller cities, the public transport system is often inadequate, in rural areas it's non-existent.

I don't drive much, but the little I do improves my quality of life significantly. Personal cars shouldn't disappear, but cities should be designed to minimize need for them, and public transport systems should be improved. Those of us who need a car to reach rural locations still should be able to own one. Taxation should focus on car usage, not ownership, and tax usage more in cities than in areas where cars are more necessary. Owning a car is not inherently worse than any other form of ownership.

The way I see it, both things are true - European politicians and major parties have stirred anger by their incompetence, AND Russia has exploited this anger for their own purposes.

EU has huge flaws, but it's still better than Russia. Germans, French and the British may not understand it, but us unfortunate enough to live next to Russia do. There is a reason why Poland, Baltic countries and now even Finland and Sweden joined NATO. Russia is ruled by evil, murderous tyrants (as is always has been), while EU elite is merely lazy, greedy and incompetent.

I'll choose pro-EU parties over pro-Russian parties as long as EU is not bombing children's hospitals and massacring civilians. I can only hope citizens of other countries do the same, or otherwise there's a pretty good possibility my country will face what Ukraine has suffered.

It's unfortunate that so many alternatives to mainstream parties in big EU countries are also more or less pro-Russian. One should be able to vote against the flaws of European Union without voting for closer ties with Putin.

Java & Spring is a good choice whenever you want your application to work and be maintainable 10 years from now, without having to replace the framework and half of the libraries you used. I see few good reasons to ever use something with unstable ecosystem (like Javascript with NodeJS) over Java these days.
rwyinuse··on Java 27
Yep, with Spring Boot development is so easy, and even decade old projects are mostly easy to upgrade. I don't have experience from C# or .NET development, but at least compared to Python and especially JS ecosystems it's so much better.

Could be also rogue farmers paid by Russia. Easiest way for Russia to cause havoc in Europe is through exploiting existing political issues.

If you inhale the smoke, it's quite irrelevant whether smoking an industrial cigarette, pipe or a hand-crafted cigar without additives. You'll probably get lung cancer anyway if you continue it long enough. Smoke is always carcinogenic.

I don't really get the point when there are many ways of getting nicotine without the smoke.

rwyinuse··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The main problem with Apple's is the limited years of updates to MacOS, combined with less than ideal Linux support. I can easily install Linux on any Thinkpad, but I don't think it's yet easy for newer Macbooks.

With Linux, a device can stay snappy far longer than Apple provides updates to MacOS. That's why my personal computer is old Thinkpad, I can thankfully use work-issued Mac for anything that requires more power.

Unfortunately, if you want to fix electronics more often than not China is the only place you can buy spare parts. I don't think buying spare parts to devices counts as "stupid shit".
rwyinuse··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Universal healthcare works just fine in Europe without major issues like that. It's the American political system that is broken. Your de facto two-party political system lets idiots take total control way too easily, as we can see with current US administration.

My country has universal public healthcare, and nobody forces you, or even your children to get vaccinated, monitors what you eat, or any other form of control that you're worried of. Organ donations are voluntary too, you can opt-out easily. And if you think the system sucks, nothing prevents you from taking extra insurance and using whatever private healthcare provider you want.

This is one of the rare situations where an out-of-control homelab & PC building hobby is actually useful. With over 250GB of RAM & 90TB of storage I will be fine for a while, especially as long as DDR4 era machines remain relevant.

If your business involves storing any kind of customer data or handling payments, you probably should still hire a programmer who at least reviews the results of your vibe coding. Getting hacked is bad for business.
rwyinuse··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
Meanwhile the size of residential parking slots usually stays the same for decades after being built. I had "fun" of living in an apartment complex built in the 60's, one could only barely fit modern cars to the designated spots.

Humans notoriously suck at context-switching. I doubt you can really do multiple projects simultaneously without compromising quality.
rwyinuse··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
We have the highest unemployment rate in EU, and fast growing public debt (7th highest right now). Trust me, ordinary people here are quite broke after we consider the living expenses.

It's expected that in 4 years our debt to GDP ratio will reach that of Spain right now. And Spain's ratio is decreasing. We'll be right there with Greece, Italy and France soon enough, and I doubt unemployment will get any better.

rwyinuse··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Where I'm from OnePlus has actually sold pretty well, competing with price. But then again Finland is one of the most broke countries in EU, so lots of people are price-conscious. Hopefully Oppo will bring some replacement models with equally good price-performance ratio.

I paid 130 euros brand new for my Nord CE 5 with 8GB/128GB configuration. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. All I care is about price/performance ratio and the years of updates promised.

Nurses will likely be one of the last professions to be significantly impacted by robotics. Drivers, factory, warehouse, agriculture workers, cashiers etc will be automated away way before them.

It's just hard to design robots that can handle patients that may be simultaneously fragile, mentally handicapped and aggressive in a way that doesn't hurt them and respects their rights. It can take multiple human nurses to do a seemingly simple thing like changing a diaper.

Just make sure not to fire half of your police forces. Finland has about 130 police officers per 100k people, America has 242 according to Wikipedia. Due to extreme lack of police resources, the enforcement of traffic laws is not good here. Mostly last century tech, like automatic traffic cameras in few fixed locations.
rwyinuse··on How we can reduce traffic congestion
What if I want my own garden and not monoculture lawn? What if I want my children to be able to walk in nature near their home? Neither is possible in a densely built city where there are only apartments.

Then there are all the social problems, bad neighbours that become more common in densely built areas. I don't want to deal with that. Suburbs are popular because they provide a superior quality of life for many people.

Of course in an ideal world everyone would be allowed to do fully remote work if possible, and people like me could move to countryside.

rwyinuse··on How we can reduce traffic congestion
Increasing ownership and fuel costs is wrong, as it makes life more difficult also for people living in areas where public transport is not feasible.

If Russian civilians stopped sleeping and took up arms against their government, then maybe this war could end. The people responsible are all members of the Russian government, and Russian people's apathy (or in many cases support for the war) enables them.

In case you didn't notice, nobody has invaded Russia since Hitler. Instead it has been Russia invading other countries, using whatever imaginary threat as an excuse.

You may be right about WW3 in 2030, but based on the track record it's more likely that Russia will be the invader.

America may have tens of millions of armed civilians, but I'm not convinced that so many of them care about freedom of speech, particularly when it comes to people who they disagree with.

Yeah, even most two stroke mopeds are tolerable in terms of sound level with stock parts. At least where I'm from youth often replace the exhaust pipe with larger one that maybe brings slight power boost, and a massive increase in noise level. Unfortunately police doesn't really care although it's technically illegal, and these hooligans get to ruin other people's sleep.

I think the real issue here is lack of progress in AR technology. Tenants may be disappointed by the difference between marketing material and reality, but that can be easily solved by AR glasses that the tenants can wear 24/7 to make the apartment look just like in marketing material, perhaps for a small monthly subscription fee. It's cheaper than renovation, that's for sure.

Mark Zuckerberg should take note.

You may be right. In addition to stricter migration policy & better integration, I also think it would make sense to legalize drugs. Make it a state monopoly like booze, and there will be much less money for criminal organizations.
rwyinuse··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
"and it's not that there is no burden on the immigrants. they still have to learn to understand the local language, culture, rule of law, etc..."

And there is the problem. You see, in modern Sweden (and many other European countries) it's entirely possible for migrants to live for decades without learning the language, understanding the culture, or even respecting the rule of law.

The majority needs to welcome and support the minority AND the minority needs to do their best to integrate. Right now the latter part is badly failing in Sweden, which is the reason for extreme amount of gang violence and social inequality plaguing Sweden. It's not even fault of the Swedes or the migrants, it's a systemic problem. The migration and integration policy is broken.

rwyinuse··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
What counts as an "extreme view" is relative. If my country had seen such a surge in gang violence as Sweden has, I too would support mass deportations of migrants with a criminal record, and much harsher migration policy. It's not that extreme of a stance considering how bad the situation has got in Sweden. I don't want to live in a society where teenagers are regularly hired as hitmen and shootings & explosions are a weekly, if not daily thing.
rwyinuse··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Sweden wasn't like USA until politicians decided to make Sweden a "humanitarian superpower" by establishing the most liberal refugee policy in the world, without thinking of how they can actually integrate and offer a better future for all those refugees. I guess the real motivation may have been getting cheap labor, rest of the society be damned.

In any case, Sweden's policies on humanitarian migration have been an utter failure, and I can't really blame Swedes for wanting to make it stricter. Obviously refugees are not the ones to be blamed here, but politicians who took in more than they could successfully integrate.
