rwmj··on SiFive's First Server Platform
It varies a lot by vendor. The older SiFive P550 is pretty good, see these forum threads: https://forums.sifive.com/t/where-is-the-source-code-of-the-... https://forums.sifive.com/t/building-opensbi-and-uboot/7681/...
rwmj··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
The problem is there used to be a separate physical card (BRP), but the Home Office got rid of it and moved to this all digital system. In other words there is no backup method available to ground staff.
rwmj··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
The eVisa system launched on 1st Jan 2025 (https://righttoremain.org.uk/update-on-evisa-transition/).
rwmj··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
The Home Office does manage to be both cruel and incompetent, which is the worst possible combination.
rwmj··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
So did we, although we were in the end able to persuade them to let us board the flight by showing a screenshot of my friend's eVisa status from the UK government website (so secure!)

To be fair to the airlines here, if they get it wrong then the UK government fines the airline. This is why they are pretty risk averse, and also why I'm surprised that the screenshot worked.

rwmj··on Google has stopped pushing Git tags for some Android source code
At least in theory, the drivers being linked to the kernel and using the GPL symbols from the kernel means the drivers could be covered by the GPL whatever Google's intended license was. I'm sure they have $$$$ lawyers who have looked into this.

Surely that depends on the side of your back yard?
rwmj··on Beware Management Consultants
Eddie Fisher (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Fisher)

The film also has loads of actors from the 1950s/1960s golden age. It was made in 1984 so for some it was their final roles.

rwmj··on Beware Management Consultants
Weird story ... Dr Bronner also appeared in the greatest unreleased movie ever made. With Bill Murray and Dan Ackyroyd and Liz Taylor's ex husband. And it was the only movie Dr Bronner appeared in according to imdb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0111462/
rwmj··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Humans manage to be pretty intelligent with only reading perhaps a few thousand books in their lifetime. It seems unlikely that AGI will appear but only once it has read that last out of print 1983 book on knitting patterns.
rwmj··on Production-ready detection and response queries for osquery
The README needs to say in plain words what it is. My best guess is something to do with intrusion detection, and finding rootkits, maybe?
rwmj··on Ultraviolet Bird Photography
My favourite blue tit fact is that they are sexually dichromatic under UV light only. The male crown is brighter in UV and females prefer males with brighter crowns. Mere humans can't tell the difference.

Comes from this rather brilliantly titled paper: Blue tits are ultraviolet tits https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1688906/

rwmj··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
This is not true, at all. Debian has like 50K packages, many of them extremely niche. Packaging is all about how difficult something is to build/package, not how popular it is. I've been a Linux distro packager for decades.
rwmj··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
Sure. They'll get it when it's packaged by the distro. Following the steps I outline will make that happen faster.
rwmj··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
In the early stages you can help by making your source code easy to build. No weird build system, make dependencies optional as much as possible, document how to build, reduce the number of steps required and make them as similar as possible to comparable software. Linux users will put up with this. That also helps distro packagers so it's a win-win.
rwmj··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
The answer is to not do it. Provide the source and help distro maintainers to package it for you. You can help by being responsive to maintainers' questions, making sure the source is clean (no binary blobs, weird licenses, strange build systems, generally builds like similar packages), and integrating patches from maintainers upstream.

Brexit is widely regarded as both a failure (in the UK) and a cautionary lesson (in the rest of the EU).

rwmj··on Reviving a four year old reMarkable 2
I'm confused. Your physical notebook management is awful, ie. I guess you have live in a house without shelves or something. But spending time troubleshooting an electronic device from only 2022 is easier?

Next up, "reviving my paper notes from 40 years ago". Oh wait, there's nothing that I need to do, they still all work fine.

rwmj··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
One is that Sun/Oracle made an honest mistake with the license (self-inflicted). The other is that they regretted that Java was ever open source and so made the license and other processes around Java as annoying as possible while still being technically open source.
rwmj··on AI psychosis is the new leadership blind spot
If the CTO was right about the premise it'd be fine, but much more likely he pulled the "everyone is happy with 1s" out of his arse and then used his position/authority to bully the team.
rwmj··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
Intentional rather than self-inflicted.

Retirement age is usually tied to various benefits. In the UK it's the age at which you can collect the state pension (currently around £12K per year, if you worked for 30-35 years). Changing the retirement age therefore affects the state's finances, quite dramatically in fact: https://obr.uk/box/the-fiscal-impact-of-increases-in-the-sta...
