rwmj··on Qwen Image 2.1
> You mean besides stable-diffusion.cpp ?

Yes, thanks, I didn't know about that. Will try it.

rwmj··on Qwen Image 2.1
Additional question is what kind of local hardware would be required for this? 7B parameters sounds very light weight, but I'm not sure. (Edit: The download is 33 GB).

Edit x2: As usual I'm in a twisty maze of pip packages that don't work together, with obscure errors about missing modules, even though I followed the instructions on the page to the letter. I really wish people didn't use Python for this stuff. A simple C/C++ program would be so much better.

rwmj··on AI Protest in Montreal
There's a rather large difference in scale for a start.
rwmj··on Jemalloc 5.4.0
(Not an expert but ...) unless you pin threads to cores, which is not the default and somewhat awkward in Linux for user applications, having a per-thread cache doesn't really make sense as your thread could be moved to another core and then your cache will no longer be local to the physical cache.
rwmj··on The scourge of x86 emulation
I don't know, but assumed that Valve doesn't require studios to recompile their software or use any special tooling, it's basically just packaging of existing executables. This is also why they do Windows on Linux emulation.
rwmj··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
It's Arm based, although they barely mention that.

I've paid to drive a train simulator (in fact, I have a collection of several train simulators).
rwmj··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Good for car manufacturers, not necessarily for cars or their owners. As a car owner I quite like manufacturers to be forced to produce source code.

They eventually fixed the one where it didn't sort properly, but it tooks months: https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/issues/12253 https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/issues/12912
rwmj··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
I definitely remember installing it off 20+ floppies onto a 386 back in the day. Most of the disks contained packages and you didn't need to install all of them though.
rwmj··on Microcode in Intel's 8087 floating-point chip: the scale instruction
For compilers yes, but if you look at the 8086 demoscene where presumably most things are hand-coded, 8087 instructions allow incredible code compression. eg https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=78045
rwmj··on Microcode in Intel's 8087 floating-point chip: the scale instruction
I remember getting a 80387 (coprocessor for the 80386) and POVRAY renders going from running for days to still many minutes but you could sit and watch it.
rwmj··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
Knowing how to go from whatever is fresh today in the garden to a meal is a cooking skill, yes. And how to preserve gluts of fruit, also a skill.
rwmj··on Nvidia dismisses "circular financing", says every $1 it invests brings back $100
Shush there! Don't ask any difficult questions!
rwmj··on Nvidia dismisses "circular financing", says every $1 it invests brings back $100
In a very narrow sense it may be true that Nvidia expects to make some multiple of the money invested (unlikely to be 100x but whatever). But you can't talk about that without talking about the wider economy. If the wider economy, and especially the pension funds putting money into the scheme, cannot sustain this, it'll eventually collapse and then everyone including Nvidia will lose lots and lots of money.

I haven't been schooled in farming, but my understanding of food has greatly increased since we started growing our own vegetables.

rwmj··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
That doesn't change that programs doing this can be shady (or very useful).
rwmj··on I refuse to let SPICE die
You mean the closed source code that Red Hat acquired when we bought Qumranet for $100 million, then open sourced, maintained at a loss for many years, and is now (still) open source and available to everyone to use as they wish?
rwmj··on I refuse to let SPICE die
Yes, Red Hat dropped SPICE support quite some time ago. Apparently in RHEL 8.3: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5414901 It's definitely not part of any current Red Hat product. See my other reply for why this is.

I don't think we have a VDI product as such, assuming you discount VNC which we do support but is hardly a full VDI solution.

rwmj··on I refuse to let SPICE die
Not enough people want to pay for VDI basically, certainly compared to how much it costs to maintain it. SPICE at the time that we abandoned it "only" supported 2D and video compression, which is complicated enough, but everyone wanted 3D support which would have added another labyrinthine stack on top.

Also the code at the time was a massive security nightmare, written with no validation of fields in the network protocol. It was unmarshalling stuff off the network and sending it directly to X11 libs without even bounds checking. (I sincerely hope this has improved.)

With that said, I wish the project well. SPICE is a much better user experience than VNC, especially if you're looking for something that supports audio, video and USB passthru.

I'm a Fedora developer and I can assure you that Fedora's behaviour when it runs out of memory is still terrible.

rwmj··on Remember Hong Kong
One good thing is that we've extended UK residency and a path to citizenship to anyone who was born in Hong Kong before the handover (so everyone over about 30 y.o). It's pretty much the extent of what the UK could do under the circumstances - not much chance of changing the CCP to respect human rights.

So in other words, they're not withdrawing the toothbrush from sale.
rwmj··on Following complaints, Dyson is withdrawing its $500 toothbrush from sale
I can find no other news sites corroborating this article. However I can find plenty of places still selling the toothbrush. It seems like nonsense.

We've managed to emulate this behaviour in silicon now.
