rwieruch··on Ask HN: How long did it take you to go from side project idea to launch?
3 Months. It highly depends on the project though.

For me, it was an e-book [0] that I wanted to write to teach others about React. The idea was to learn React while building an application that is more complex than a Todo Application.

So I took the first 3 months to write the initial draft - only 90 pages. I released it on Leanpub as an unfinished book, because it was painfully hard to keep going. Yet the community seemed to like it. It confirmed me being on the right track and my motivation went up again.

Since then I iterated 4 times to improve and enrich the learning experience and "released" it multiple times. I keep it updated to the recent library versions, best practices and new techniques with the help of the open source community. Now it has over 170 pages and over 11.000 downloads.

What helped in my case: Release early and improve/iterate based on the feedback.

Do you have any numbers on conversion rates of Stripe vs Paypal?
rwieruch··on Show HN: A stop-motion video of an engine
I thought the same. I guess you could charge way more for this kind of content. Great work!
rwieruch··on Ask HN: Fear?
You should read "Give and Take" by Adam Grant. It clearly shows all the benefits of being a Giver rather than a Taker. I've written down my learnings [0], since I really enjoyed reading it.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How to maintain focus during long, critical-thinking intensive, tasks
I really loved the book in combination with the book Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. In Deep Work are several strategies explained to get into a state of flow by doing deep work. [0]

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Resources for learning advanced JavaScript and React
The Road to learn React [0] is an open source book that gets continuously improved because it was self-published and the community contributes as well. You will build a React.js application along the way and transition smoothly from JavaScript ES5 to JavaScript ES6. It teaches the fundamentals of React without any tooling or Redux. Afterward, you are ready to go to build your own React applications. I would love to get your feedback on the book! :)

Otherwise, I can recommend to checkout this repository [1] by Mark Erikson to find out more about React and its ecosystem. I am sure you will find plenty of starter tutorials to get into learning React.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: HNers who got their “Show HNs” on homepage, how is your site doing now?
That's amazing. I would love to connect with you on Twitter if you would have the time. But since we are not following each other, I cannot send any messages. I am growing my blog similar to yours, but it is an personal blog though.

222 Days Ago - Show HN: The Road to learn React – Build a Hacker News App on the Way [0]

The book [1] was downloaded by 9600+ people by now. It is an open source book that gets continuously improved. You build an React.js application along the way and transition smoothly from JavaScript ES5 to JavaScript ES6. It teaches the fundamentals of React without any tooling or Redux. Afterward you are ready to go to build your own React applications.

I must say I never expected this amazing reaction from the community.

rwieruch··on What books can I read to improve my writing?
I can only agree with it. I summarized my learnings from the book, if you are interested to have a look what it is about: https://www.robinwieruch.de/lessons-learned-on-writing-well/
rwieruch··on Ask HN: Do you keep track of what you learn? how?
I keep track about my learnings by blogging about them. Especially in web development (React) I try to keep up with them. In addition, I write down summaries of books that I have read. [0] Unfortunately I am reading more books than I am able to summarize ...

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Good stack for a billing and invoicing application?
If you like to try React, checkout the open source book The Road to learn React [0]. Not sure what kind of payment gateway you are using, but after your first application is up and running, you could add Stripe to it [1][2].

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Which books are you reading in 2017?
Among other books, I read this year Give and Take [0], Flow and Deep Work [1]. I tend to summarize the books I enjoyed the most, to internalize them myself, but also to give others access to it. Maybe you find them interesting (if you haven't already read them). My whole reading list can be found on Goodreads [2] for more inspiration :)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Where to start learning React?
Coming with an open source E-Book too: https://www.robinwieruch.de/the-road-to-learn-react/
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What is your process for creating a new static website and deploying it?
I use Hugo [0] as a static website generator. They have plenty of themes [1] to choose from. You can still adjust it with basic knowledge in HTML/CSS. Afterward you can chose where to host it. You can use Github Pages [2] for free or pay for a service like DigitalOcean (starting with 5€ a month which scales well) [3]. I wrote a technical cheatsheet [4] on how to setup your own website with these ingredients.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How do I increase my newsletter subscribers?
People already consume too much stuff a day without producing anything. That's why they don't want to subscribe to yet another newsletter. I guess the ultimate baseline of getting subscribers is getting more page visitors with SEO and continuous content production.

I have generated a couple of thousand subscribers with a giveaway ebook. [0] In the beginning, it was difficult for me to get subscribers with only content. That's why I decided to write an ebook to grow my audience, to get exposure and to learn myself more about the topic in detail.

Personally I try to keep the newsletter annoyance low for my visitors (e.g. avoiding popups to signup for my newsletter). My personal opinion is that if you are in for the long run with your website, you want visitors to enjoy the reading experience and in return to come back to your website.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What is a simple tool for asking for emails from users
That's my favorite: https://www.getrevue.co/pricing

It's simplistic and doesn't have all the features that MailChimp offers, but it is way more intuitiv and cheaper once your audience scales.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Favorite frameworks for web development?
Since I am developing on a daily basis with React, it is obviously my favorite choice. It is not a framework, but a view layer library. However, by only using the view layer you can already build frontend applications.

The ecosystem around React is huge. But you don't have to use anything to build an application with React. [0] For instance, most people try too early to use a state management library. But you don't have to use it from the start [1], because React comes with its own internal state management. It makes sense to learn the React fundamentals first and build your own application with it [2] before you dive deeper into the ecosystem [3].

Deep Work + Flow [0]

rwieruch··on The Right to Attention in an Age of Distraction
Amazing article, thanks for sharing it. I am highly interested in this topic, even though I have no professional connection to it. Thanks for your deep dive into it!

It quickly reminded me of Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Deep Work by Cal Newport. It was no surprised to find these people again in your article. In one article of mine, I have reflected on this topic as well and concluded how important attention (for instance created through deep work) can lead to a satisfied life (because of flow). [0]

Can you recommend further reading material on this topic?

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Why blog as a developer?
- learning something yourself by teaching it

- understand nuances in something by teaching it

- improving your writing skills

- seeing a purpose in helping others

- building a personal brand that helps you to land jobs in the future or create a business from it

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Starting a project today, which web framework would you use?
Depends on the case:

- Do I want to use the latest technology?

- Do I want to bootstrap fast?

- Do I want to experiment/learn or do I want to build a business?

Depending on these questions, everyone has to decide on their own. If it would be me, I would take MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React and Node).

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Which MOOCs are often overlooked?
Yep. I don't no why, but I always misunderstood the term MOOC. Thanks :)
rwieruch··on Git Town – A high-level command line interface for Git
I will give it a shot! Thanks for the clarifications :)
rwieruch··on Ask HN: How do I switch from being a passive consumer to an active producer?
I followed two rules to shift from a consumer to a producer:

1. have a fixed amount of time to read HN, Reddit, Twitter, Email

2. have a release schedule

The first rule helps me to keep the consuming time to a minimum. Only once in the morning, after lunch and after work I check the recent (!) updates on all necessary platforms. It can be hard in the beginning, but at some point it becomes a habit.

The second rule helps me to stick to producing. I blog about web development and self-growth and therefore I have a backlog of ideas to write about. Once a week I post an article.
