rwieruch··on Ask HN: Best language for general AI programming?
If you are into JavaScript, checkout this article for ML in JS [0]. JavaScript is not suited for AI, but if you happen to know it already and just want to do ML for yourself, you can try it out in the browser.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How to Seriously Start with Machine Learning and AI
Just recently I have written a "Machine Learning for Web Developers in JavaScript" blog post [0]. If you or someone else is a web developer, it might be interesting. It outlines my approach of learning it and gives a couple of great resources for JavaScript enthusiasts. Otherwise, I will just post a couple of the materials I used for myself to learn about ML below.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Those starting new side projects in 2018 – Show and tell
2017 was full of web development with JavaScript and React for me [0]. It was time to peak into another subject. That's why I started to learn about machine learning in the last months of 2017 and want to continue this endeavour in 2018. My desire is to spread the knowledge for web developers and JavaScript enthusiasts [1]. Maybe I can give people coming from web development the opportunity to hop on the machine learning train by using JavaScript instead of having to learn another programming language (Python) for it. At the moment, I learn ML myself by implementing the learned things in JavaScript [2].

rwieruch··on ASCIIFlow Infinity
Awesome application! I used it in the past to draw ASCII diagrams for my blog posts (e.g. [0]) as I was looking for an alternative way to display "images". Still needs some tweaking for mobile usage, but on desktop it's just great because of the removed loading times for images.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: I feel like I've destroyed my attention span. How do I get it back?
If you are looking for books about getting your attention back, I can only recommend Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi [0] and Deep Work by Cal Newport [1] I wrote an extensive blog post about both books (which happened to be on HN too), because they are kinda life changing.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment of 2017?
Building an own course platform [0] for teaching React :) Everything I learned during this process is written down in this long read article [1]. It was a long journey, but definitely worth it considering all the learnings (not only implementation wise) along the way.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2017?
Pretty popular and not a niche book, but I enjoyed Give and Take by Adam Grant very much [0].

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Production setup for apps
Digital Ocean all the way. I am using a couple of inexpensive Droplets for server blocks and Dokku to host multiple websites, applications and APIs horizontally on those instances. This article [0] gives a lot of insights about my setup.

OP here: Please checkout the GitHub repository of the Neural Network in JS too [0].

Would love to see some exciting discussions around machine learning in JS. I am exploring the topic heavily at the moment and I am keen to apply/write/educate/learn more about it.

rwieruch··on How APIs Work – An Analogy for Dummies
I had a similar case where I had to explain APIs to a broad audience of people starting with React.js. So I took the approach to take them on a journey how I learned about APIs in their different contexts and how they can empower one to build applications [0]. Maybe it is interesting for someone of you too.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Best way to get started with AI?
I am sitting in the same boat. Being a web developer for a couple of years, I wanted to try out a different domain. So I started to take Andrew Ng's course on Coursera [0]. Highly recommended. I supplement the course with audio and text by listening to the Machine Learning Guide Podcast [1] and by reading The Master Algorithm [2].

In addition, I started to apply my learnings in JavaScript [3]. Even though it's not the best language for ML, it makes it simpler to learn only one new thing and stick to known technologies for the rest. I have lined up ~7 articles about ML in JavaScript, so if you are interested, you can keep an eye on it :)

rwieruch··on Which service do you use to host static website?
I use Hugo [0] as a static website generator. They have plenty of themes [1] to choose from. You can still adjust it with basic knowledge in HTML/CSS. Afterward you can chose where to host it. You can use Github Pages [2] for free or pay for a service like DigitalOcean (starting with 5€ a month which scales well) [3]. I wrote a technical cheatsheet [4] on how to setup your own website with these ingredients.

rwieruch··on Show HN: The Road to learn React [4th edition, free ebook]
Hello there! I am so excited to release the 4th edition of the Road to learn React. It teaches the fundamentals of React in a 190-page ebook and runs under the payment model pay what you want. So you can grab the ebook for free! There are a couple of other bundles that help me to ensure keeping the ebook for free to enable everyone learning React.

On the journey, you will build your own Hacker News application by implementing exciting features such as sending search requests to an API, implementing client-side pagination, and performing client-side caching. Over 12.000 people have downloaded the ebook so far! Everything bundled up to learn all the fundamentals about React and JavaScript ES6 along the way. I hope you grab your copy and start to learn React :-)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How do you author your eBooks in 2017?
I have self-published two ebooks on Leanpub [0]. It just great to get you started in self-publishing, because they take multiple input source and output your ebook in PDF, EPUB and MOBI. It used to be for free to create an ebook, but now it costs you $99 to create one. Still, you will get a lot of value out of it.

There are several ways to write your ebook: For instance, I have written mine simply by using markdown, uploading it to GitHub [1] and giving Leanpub access to it as collaborator. That way Leanpub is able to pull the recent manuscript from your repository for a new release or generating a preview. In addition, hosting the manuscript on a public GitHub repository (in case your ebook is open source), gives you the ability to make use of collaborating with others on it. Highly recommended platform!

rwieruch··on Show HN: Taming the State in React – A Journey to Learn Redux and MobX in React
I pretty excited to launch today my course about Redux and MobX in React.js.

What started as an idea to write an ebook about Redux and MobX in React.js, turned out to evolve into a full blown course with a 250-page ebook, 8 source code applications and boilerplate projects to get you started, as well as 3 screencast series with me building applications from scratch and explaining these step by step for you.

I am still a bit shaky to release it today, but I would love to hear your thoughts about it.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What is everyone currently working on?
Working every minute right now on my second online course for learning ReactJs. Hopefully I can release it next week without any quirks :)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Who's mentoring?
React | Remote (Slack Group) | 200+ people learning React themselves, but eager to help others | https://slack-the-road-to-learn-react.wieruch.com/

It is a Slack Group where people help each other to learn React. Primary it is aimed for people reading the book "The Road to learn React", but the community is growing beyond it. Learning something by helping others can be a great way to internalize your own learnings. That's why everyone is eager to help.
