rwieruch··on Ask HN: What is your current best development environment?
- Development Environment: lightweight editor + command line rather than one IDE: Sublime + iTerm [0]

- Hosting: Digital Ocean with Dokku (web applications) and server blocks (static website) [1]

- Application Development: React, React Router, Apollo, GraphQL, Express, PostgreSQL [2]

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How did your passion for computer stuff start?
I was always into "computer stuff", but nothing serious where I could earn any money (gaming > programming). So the programming part, where I ended up in the end as software developer, took off very late for me.

I studied computer science, but didn't really know why I did it. I learned about all this programming syntax, solving smaller problems, but it was always difficult for me grasping the bigger picture. But there was one seminar for half a year which open my eyes: Distributed Systems. Suddenly the bigger picture, having webservices, IOT or mobile devices, made so much more sense to me. Everything is connected with an API and not till then the acronym made sense for me. After the seminar I saw this huge potential in programming, because everything could be connected. That's when I started to develop serious interest in programming. If you are interested about it , you can read the whole story over [here](https://www.robinwieruch.de/what-is-an-api-javascript/).

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What are some resume/portfolio style webpages you like?
Perhaps it depends on the market, because often you will just need a plain CV/Resume. However, there are recruiters/companies who stumble on your personal website (e.g. http://iamliesa.com is my partner's website about content marketing) and if it is attractive, it already convinces them to take the next step and contact you.
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
This.

Maybe I am biased because I develop most of my applications in React. But if you don't want to bother with any backend application and just want to get out quickly, build your React application with Firebase. That's how I do it and that's why I also covered my whole boilerplate process in a comprehensive tutorial [0].

rwieruch··on Mailtrain.org, self-hosted open-source newsletter app like Mailchimp
I am curious whether your stats such as open rate changed after you have migrated.
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What technologies do you use to run your personal blog?
I use Hugo [0] as a static website generator. They have plenty of themes [1] to choose from. You can still adjust it with basic knowledge in HTML/CSS. Afterward you can chose where to host it. You can use Github Pages [2] for free or pay for a service like DigitalOcean (starting with 5€ a month which scales well) [3]. I wrote a technical cheatsheet [4] on how to setup your own website with these ingredients.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Blogging to get contracting/job leads?
I started to do consulting last year and since then I got all my clients via blogging. [0] On my website, I mainly write about JavaScript, React and Web Development and teach students in my courses about those topics. Clients mainly approach me to help them migrating over to web technologies, solving more complex problems with React or auditing their code bases. So yes, it works once you got readers on your blog :)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How to self-learn ML?
Just recently I have written a "Machine Learning for Web Developers in JavaScript" blog post [0]. If you or someone else is a web developer, it might be interesting. It outlines my approach of learning it and gives a couple of great resources for JavaScript enthusiasts. Otherwise, I will just post a couple of the materials I used for myself to learn about ML below.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Why are frameworks necessary when plain HTML/CSS/JS are simpler?
The one question you need to ask yourself when starting a new project: what's the end goal in size and complexity?

If it's only a static website, for instance a blog or your personal portfolio, HTML & CSS with a couple of vanilla JavaScript functions is fine. However, once you add complexity to your application, by using more than a couple of utility JavaScript functions, there needs to be some kind of "framework" to organize your View and Logic. React is used when it comes to organizing your view as components, and JavaScript ES5 and beyond is doing the rest by adding the necessary business logic. That's what makes React so great in the end, because most of it simply stays plain JavaScript [0]. React is only the view layer by organizing your application in components.

In case you are interested, just recently I had written down my thoughts [1] on this questions for people learning React, Angular or Vue nowadays, but questioning why they should learn it in the first place.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
In this book, The Road to learn React [0], you will learn the fundamentals of React while building a larger application with sorting, caching and searching an API.

- [0] https://www.robinwieruch.de/the-road-to-learn-react

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What APIs do you wish existed?
PPP [0] - I wrote my own little node package around it [1], but it was tough to find a proper API(s) to retrieve and aggregate all the data.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How did you start your business?
It simply started out with blogging about web development, JavaScript, and React and writing a self-published book about it eventually. I didn't plan to do it in the first place, but now I teach many people online React.js on my own course platform [0].

It's an exciting adventure, because suddenly you have to handle customer support, marketing and sales. Yet your main priority is keeping the course content up to date, adding new content and ensuring content with a high quality. It's not a 100% full-time gig yet, but I would say 60%. I hope by getting more students this year that I can accelerate it to 100%, because the teaching part itself is more fulfilling for me than any other 9 to 5 job. Last year I quit my job to support this adventure, but I have to have a couple of clients on the side [1]. Most of these clients are companies which are transitioning to React.

rwieruch··on GitHub client built with React, Apollo, GraphQL
Author here :) I used Apollo for the first time in this application, it was great throughout the implementation, but this was truly the worst part to implement. It came with multiple flaws in my eyes which are perhaps due to Apollo being in early stages or me just being inexperienced with it.

- updateQuery was a deprecated property when I implemented it and one should use update instead. But it wasn't and maybe still isn't possible to use update for the fetchMore scenario.

- I couldn't find any real consensus on keeping immutable data structures in Apollo. Since I favor to work with it, I kept it this way. However, in the case of pagination and deep nested data structures, you would have to fallback to a library to deal with it. Apollo adds their own immutable helper to the whole tech stack which means to adapt yet another API... I wouldn't want to do it and I think it's a bad decision to introduce yet another immutable helper. That's why I picked the object spread operator.

- I would hope that updateQuery goes away and one would be able to use writeFragement in the update property to update the paginated data. If it's possible, I would love to speak more about this topic with people more knowledgable than me in Apollo :)

rwieruch··on Propel – Machine learning for Javascript
That's totally exciting! Thanks to the author for enriching the ML ecosystem in JavaScript :)

I didn't explore the full API yet, but already seeing the plotting functionality for functions is a tremendous win for ML in JavaScript.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: How do you start a career as a software consultant?
Blogging is my way to get clients. The great thing about it: Once you reach a certain grade of credibility, clients will approach you.
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What can I do as a software engineer to help the underpriviliged?
A couple of things I apply for my own doings as software engineer:

- educate aspiring software engineers from other countries online by writing on your blog for free about software engineering topics

- in the long term, try to translate the content to other languages (maybe pay someone to do it)

- maximize your income and donate money to children's education in other countries, they need to have the chance to learn the English language in the first place to be able to consume all the free educational content and open source projects which can be found online

- if you put an educational course online for $99 to educate others about software engineering, think about developing countries where it's not possible to pay the $99 for a 5 hours video course, the price can be adjusted on a country base by something like PPP [0]

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Where do you find great remote developers?
I am sitting on the other side of the table. If I am actively looking for a gig, which rarely happens, I have a look into all the remote job boards. Then it depends on the job description and how the company presents itself. Otherwise the HN Freelancer/Job Threads each month are valuable too.

However, I must admit that 90% of my professional opportunities are generated through my own website. Recruiters for remote jobs or people with project based opportunities are reaching out to me after reading a blog post of mine. So I guess that many people/companies looking for remote professionals are evaluating websites from individuals (blogger/open source maintainer/...) too.
