rwieruch··on The Road to GraphQL
I think you will meet more refactoring in this book :) Great that you liked it!
rwieruch··on The Road to GraphQL
Hello, author here :)

There are 4 applications the readers of this book are going to build along the way. I think that's more pragmatic than other programming books.

Most, not all, of the other mentioned topics are too niche to address them in a beginners GraphQL book that should be read by a broader audience IMO. But I keep these topics in a list to write supplementary blog posts about them.

Thanks for your insights on this! Helps a lot to identify the pain points the community has on this topic :)

rwieruch··on The Road to GraphQL
Yes. I have PPP via this https://github.com/rwieruch/purchasing-power-parity Unfortunately I hit the API limit for this month for the third-party APIs the library is using. Hacker News ... :D
rwieruch··on The Road to GraphQL
Hello everyone. Author here :-) I released the book 48 hours ago and I am overwhelmed by the positive reactions. The last 10 months I put lots of work into it and finally released it as a top quality and up-to-date resource for people who want to learn GraphQL in JavaScript.

If you are interested in the content, checkout the release blog post that is used here on HN. The book comes with 4 applications, client- and server-side, that you will build along the way, 350 pages, 45+ exercises, 400+ code snippets.

I would be curious how you like the content, but also what other content you would have expected in this book. Thanks to all of you again!

rwieruch··on A List of Recommender Systems and Resources
For anyone who wants to get started with this, maybe this basic movie recommender [0] implemented in JavaScript is a nice start.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What boilerplate do you use to start your Node/React projects?
You can use this boilerplate https://github.com/the-road-to-graphql/fullstack-apollo-expr... and follow the tutorial along the way. It also comes with a React client-side application that uses all the server-side functionalities, but there is not tutorial yet.

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Did any Show HN posts turn into successful startups?
I did a Show HN for my React book two years ago https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13170837 Since then I transitioned from being employed at a startup to being self-employed where I split my time doing 50% consulting work (which is passively generated through my blog) and the other 50% for educational platform/books https://roadtoreact.com Hacker News gave me one of the initial feedbacks which made me follow this passion :)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: What software should I use to write a textbook?
You should give Leanpub [0] a shot which is a platform for self-publishers. You not only get full-control over the process, but you can also use various input sources and formats (GitHub/Bitbucket, Dropbox, PDF, ...) and output formats (PDF, EPUB, MOBI).

I write all my books with Markdown and Git/GitHub [1] and release them eventually on Leanpub [2]. Even if you don't want to release the book on their platform, you can take away the output files and publish them somewhere else (e.g. own platform, Amazon).

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Has anyone built a recommendation engine in-house?
I was in the same situation and learned about recommender systems by implementing a simple movie recommendation system in JavaScript. If you are interested, you can find the source code over here: https://github.com/javascript-machine-learning/movielens-rec...

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Advice for self-publishing books
Leanpub is a great platform for self-publishing: https://leanpub.com It has multiple input (.doc, GitHub, ...) and output sources (PDF, EPUB, MOBI). In the end, you can publish the book on their platform or simply use the files for your own platform or Amazon.

Hey, author here :) I am curious about your experiences using/learning React. Are there any other JavaScript topics which are important when starting out with React? Would be great hearing your opinion!
rwieruch··on JavaScript fundamentals before learning React
Good point, thank you for the clarification! Somehow I have always thought about showing the intent of keeping the data structure immutable when using const. I have changed it in the article. One more learning for me today :)
rwieruch··on JavaScript fundamentals before learning React
Author here {: Yes, what you are saying here is what I meant. I didn't want to mix in the whole topic around "passing by value or reference" in this short teaser.

Hi Swizec  :)

rwieruch··on Ask HN: Were you happy moving your API from REST to GraphQL?
Yes.

I had the chance to participate in moving the client-server architecture from REST to GraphQL when I worked for two companies as a contractor. They didn't regret it so far. There a various advantages (and disadvantages) [0] using GraphQL.

But these are only the direct impacts of using GraphQL. In the case of these two applications, they had a React client application managed by a GraphQL client library. All the state management done with Redux/MobX was reduced to a minimum, because most of the managed state was remote data from an API. Now the GraphQL client was able to take over, leaving only the local UI state for Redux/MobX. Often it is even possible to remove these state management libraries altogether.

rwieruch··on How Fast Can You Learn React?
Thanks for the article! Just giving some numbers from my experiences here. Since I released "The Road to learn React" book 1 1/2 years ago, I got various feedback on how long it takes people from knowing only JavaScript ES5, HTML and CSS to being employed as a React developer. I heard numbers around 1 - 2 months for being really proficient with React (and partly its ecosystem), but I have heard about success stories where people managed to get through the book (and its project) over one weekend, having the job interview the coming week, and being employed as React developer then. Personally I think this is only possible because React has a slim API and once you have built a project with plain React, you should be able to get the job done. Then Redux et. al can be learned on top during the job.
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What APIs do you use the most?
Yes. In the end I hope that it's only the minority of people exploiting it and that it does more good for the people who cannot afford to pay for something.
rwieruch··on Ask HN: What APIs do you use the most?
Not the most, but pretty important for me: Purchasing Power Parity [0]
