rweir··on 'iPad Mini' Pricing to Begin at Approximately $329
> Yeah, anything above $279 would be a huge disappointment.

how so?

rweir··on China Warns of 'Prejudice' After Being Bashed in US Telecom Report
quadruple irony points to the US getting up on their high horse about this after subverting their own companies to institute mass surveillance of the world's Internet users: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A et al.

rweir··on Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet
how much anecdata do you demand?
rweir··on "If you want to order it, use 'view source' to find the commented-out link."
or you can just spend those two beers on prgrmr, or 3 beers at linode? for tech people in the West, the amount of money is so small, why would you bother going with the absolute bottom of the market?
rweir··on Compromised Linode, thousands of BitCoins stolen
er no, either. ITYM "according to an alleged discussion with a Linode employee".
rweir··on All cellphones in Chile must be sold unlocked
Definitely not the case in Australia (thought as far as I know all carriers unlock for free/small fee). Locking at all is just a dick move - the telco already made you sign a contract, if you want to switch carriers, they still get their money.
rweir··on Untethered Jailbreak For (Most) iOS 5 Devices Now Available
> Do their unlocked phones really work on non-approved carriers?

yes, obviously. 'unlocked' = 'works on any carrier with which the technology (ie GSM/UMTS, works on the right bands) is compatible'. note that since tmobile almost exclusively uses an unsupported-by-Apple band for 3G (1700MHz), you're getting EDGE at best.

rweir··on Amazon Puts Your $1000 Kindle Library 'On Hold,' Apologizes, Shrugs
moral of the story: if you're going to give money to a company that uses DRM, make sure the DRM is pwnable, and make pwning your own purchases a habit.
rweir··on This 28-Year-Old Is Making Sure Credit Cards Won't Exist In The Next Few Years
if nothing else, most landlords have loans so you're subsidising their loan (so paying at least as much as you would if you had the loan).
rweir··on Microsoft spends $7.5m on IP addresses
the story is "they asked for it and were allocated it under the allocation rules at the time". pre-CIDR, you could get a class A, B or C (mostly), and a class-B isn't /that/ many IPs for a large and growing company when effectively no one else used the Internet at all.
rweir··on Inside Socl, Microsoft's Social Network
they almost always bother to have a go at $saturated_market, since they have enough of a thought-gravity-well to get /some/ people using it
