rwbhn··on Blockchain Is Puny
The other party in any transaction knows enough to "deliver" whatever you purchased. In the world where all your transactions happen on a blockchain, that's everyone from Amazon to the corner pizza shop.

rwbhn··on Summary of June 8 outage
Here's a guess: vcl [1] looks able to include time-based conditions. So customer deploys new, valid config with a time-based condition. It rolls out globally, with no issue. Then time that activates the bit which tickles this bug rolls around. Boom.

rwbhn··on IBM COBOL for Linux on x86
I recall hard to debug issues due to compiler silently dropping everything past col 80 ...
rwbhn··on TLS 1.0, 1.1 officially deprecated
The intent seems clear, though: "TLS 1.0 MUST NOT be used" "TLS 1.1 MUST NOT be used"
rwbhn··on Europeans get ‘right to repair’ for some electrical goods
I often enjoy the time I spend repairing things (modulo frustration at manufacturing stupidities that needlessly prevent simple repairs), tbh.
rwbhn··on Expanding our testing in San Francisco
I wonder how much this is impacted by people avoiding the T like the plague?
rwbhn··on The Problem with Gradle
Came here to post the same quote. Matches my experience as well.
rwbhn··on When Failures Align
> So I bit the bullet and figured out how to make (actually, adapt) a Dockerfile. Now, all of my CI builds will start with Hugo and lftp already installed.

I read that as the original reason for the reinstall everytime was not yet knowing how to build their own docker image. A reasonable place for a newbie to be. And a perfectly reasonable step to leave for future optimization.

rwbhn··on Why reskilling won’t always guarantee you a new job
Another possibility is that despite graduating from a computing or engineering program, many of these people still lack the skills STEM employers are looking for.
rwbhn··on How to Write Unit Tests for Logging
Recently added an assertion that the # of tests succeeding was > 0 to cover a similar issue.
rwbhn··on HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service”
How/where is the product lifetime defined? Could it really be a year for a printer?
rwbhn··on Use Your Bike as a Backup to Your Backup Power Supply
Ah - I'm mostly on pretty urban routes, so relatively frequent stops/slow downs is definitely a factor.
rwbhn··on Use Your Bike as a Backup to Your Backup Power Supply
Moderate - not going all out, but definitely working my legs. To the sibling question - don't have a pulse meter, so no idea.
rwbhn··on Use Your Bike as a Backup to Your Backup Power Supply
I ride 3-4 mornings/wk. Strava estimates I averaged 89w over the course of my last ride (just under an hour).
rwbhn··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
Recumbent trike. Between balance issues following brain surgery & shoulders ruined by arthritis I could no longer bicycle. Getting back on the road was life changing.
rwbhn··on We deleted the production database by accident
Yeah, if one has to regularly interact directly with prod, some sort of visual indicator is super helpful.
rwbhn··on We deleted the production database by accident
Note that ambulance ride (depending on insurance) may cost an order or 2 of magnitude more than the taxi. Well worth it in some circumstances - but not always the best option.
rwbhn··on The UNIX Time-Sharing System (1974)
Thats stdin & stdout. stderr is file descriptor 2.
rwbhn··on The Problem of Legacy IT Systems
Flashback to a utility that only existed as a binary, but was key to some prod processes. Even better - by the time I met it, said utility crashed on a SEGV after it accomplished it's task. So SOP became - ok, xxx crashed, we're good to proceed.
rwbhn··on Users may be unable to connect or experiencing degraded performance
I got thrown recently by an update log (powerapps solutions) which seems to do exactly this - an in-flight install/update is shown as a failure until it completes. Eventually figured out I should ignore entries with a null completion time.
rwbhn··on Tokyo Stock Exchange Blackout: One Piece of Hardware Took Down a Market
I would be very curious to hear about your favorable experience with untested failover systems. My last job we tested our active/standby failover like clockwork every 3 months. It served us very well.
rwbhn··on Microsoft 365 Outage
Haven't bricked emacs yet :-)
rwbhn··on Raspberry Pi as a local server for self hosting applications
Thx! Looks like just what I need.
rwbhn··on Citibank's $900M Blunder
Perhaps one should have proper controls in place?
rwbhn··on How should society judge a defendant with a brain tumor? (2017)
Had mine surgically removed going on 10 years ago. Not dead yet!
rwbhn··on Tampa teen accused of being ‘mastermind’ behind Twitter hack
Source for those charges? Article this currently points to says "The third defendant is a juvenile. With exceptions that do not apply to this case, juvenile proceedings in federal court are sealed to protect the identity of the juvenile. "
rwbhn··on A long list of GRUB2 secure-boot holes

rwbhn··on The code I’m still ashamed of (2016)
Curious about how you feel about the number of people needed to farm 100 acres of, say corn, today vs 200 years ago. Was all the automation applied to that problem unethical?
rwbhn··on The code I’m still ashamed of (2016)
"the work is still going to get done by someone" - this assumes an infinite supply of devs willing to do unethical work. Sure, in this specific instance they probably will - but I don't think we should completely dismiss the impact of decreasing that supply.
