rvo··on Sex and STEM: Stubborn Facts and Stubborn Ideologies
Yea, I saw the women in machine learning group at NIPS and was really wondering if this is a good thing or not.

Now they are considering Black in Machine Learning too (or something like that).

This all just seems sexist and racist. Mathematics and statistics shouldn't be conditioned on race and gender! What's next, there are too many Jews who win the Nobel prize?? Doesn't this type of thinking remind people of the horrible past?

rvo··on Sex and STEM: Stubborn Facts and Stubborn Ideologies
Ok, framing diversity hires as a way to sell product to other populations at least seems honest. It also explains why diversity hires are also underpaid. But a lot of the discussion around this seems to be about morality and "inclusion" based on people's chromosomes and melanin levels.

Similarly, I know that as an h1b hire, more often than not, I am just cheaper. No, the company is not hiring me because "I am the best in the world". I fear negotiating salary, fear leaving and am a little underpaid compared to the numbers I see on HN.

I hope women don't degrade themselves like we do to feed the massive profits of the big tech companies. I have faith that women are generally way more sensible then us guys and won't put up with this crap. Being a developer can be isolating, depressing and lonely.

rvo··on Sex and STEM: Stubborn Facts and Stubborn Ideologies
There is the flip side too. I wouldn't want to be known as the diversity hire. I want to be judged on my work and my skills. Not on what chromosomes I carry or what my melenin level is.

The more we keep framing things in the context of hiring to meet gender based quotas, the more people will see us as diversity hires. I would hate that more than knowing someone doesn't like me because of my gender because that persons mind I can maybe change via my skills and work.

> Whatever is holding women's participation in our field at or below twenty percent is artificial, and a travesty.

Seriously? Why does it even matter if women don't want to work in CS? Why do we software "engineers" have the ego to think that we work in some great occupation and it's a "travesty" that women largely don't have any interest in working sitting in front of a computer all day.

We are glorified mechanics. Glorified by ourselves. We mostly build intellectually draining CRUD apps mostly and earn shit wages in super expensive cities like SF. Half of us are indentured servants via the H1b system. I think women are smart that they want absolutely nothing to do with this field.

We really need to get off of our high horses and stop believing we are "changing the world" via JavaScript.

The Reasonable Person Principle was the best thing I learned from CMU

* Everyone will be reasonable.

* Everyone expects everyone else to be reasonable.

* No one is special.

* Do not be offended if someone suggests you are not being reasonable

Why tolerate illegal immigration and make legal immigration so hard? Do you see how out of whack the incentives are? I did a BS and MS from good schools here... Pay tens of thousands in taxes every year due to my high income. But I am in constant worry as I am on a h1b and have a pending green card. In the mean time, I am seeing illegal aliens, hundreds of thousands of them, get EAD cards! I don't even have an EAD. I am enslaved to my company (good thing I like my job!). With EAD you don't even have that issue.

Of course I don't have an issue with latin people. I got an issue with illegals being given preference over legals. There are many Indian illegal immigrats too. They overstay visa. I met a cab driver from India who described in detail how he illegally migrated via the Mexico border. Now he has an EAD card somehow. It's so bizzare.

Do what Canada does. Use point system. And please remove the racist "national origin" quota for immigration. See the racially allocated dates here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/v.... They are currently "processing" Indians who applied in 2008!! China is 2013. But Mexicans and everyone else, it's "current" (meaning no waiting).

It selectively harm's Indians and Chinese, the most educated immigrants to this country. Literally, there is a special column for Indian, Chinese and Mexicans in the green card line. Make it country agonistic and use points that select for highly educated, English speaking immigrants. Then you can have such great quality of immigrants as Canada.

I love this country but it hurts when my friends (all liberal Democrats ) continuously care more about illegals than their friend who has been in this country for 15 years and still in the queue for the greencard ...

Can you point me to research into how XX is different from social gender? I think I'm not understanding this point. How can society construct the idea of a gender, if not from biology? How else was the social concept of gender created ?
rvo··on Duolingo podcast: The kiddnapping of Luis von Ahn's aunt
Yea. As an Indian it's hard to believe people are propping up illegal immigration. It takes decades for an Indian to legally migrate here. Maybe we should just become illegals. Perhaps then we will get some sympathy from the media and the liberal class.

Hah. I am genuinely confused about which Michael Jordan you were referring to. I am assuming you mean Michael I Jordan.
rvo··on Amazon, Berkshire, JPMorgan to Create Healthcare Company
I wonder if we could collectively use civil disobedience and refuse to pay for healthcare and insurance until major changes are made to the system. Non violent civil disobedience. Essentially a strike against the system.

Does your blood not boil that the original charge is of 12 thousand dollar?

> The doctors in the emergency room did multiple tests including a CT scan and ultrasound. They determined that Cloyd had ovarian cysts, not appendicitis. They gave her pain medications that helped her feel better, and an order to follow up with a gynecologist.

> A few weeks later, Cloyd received something else: a $12,596 hospital bill her insurance denied — leaving her on the hook for all of it.

For a few tests, the hospital charges 12,000 dollars. How is this sane? People should be rioting over this.
