rvnx··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Totally agree, though it is an unpopular opinion here.

It’s the same paradox as people claiming: “we are European, our data is safer in Europe” when actually your privacy is higher when your data is stored in China (or Russia) you are safer because it is out of reach from your local government.

The only thing I dislike, and that’s no matter the service, is that my data or information usage is shared with third-party.

For example, Anthropic conveniently forgets to mention Datadog has tons and tons of information about Claude users, or that your data transits through machines they don’t operate.

Sounds perfect, sell it to me.

I use LLMs for health, design and programming.

If you want to make a political or religious pamphlet it’s not a single LLM that you should base yourself on. No matter where it comes from.

Quite counterproductive to refuse to help on health issues too. If they detect health data, they can add a disclaimer, but not hide the information.

The safest is called DeepSeek. Others are just promises, that have to abide by the laws that might require leaking the conversations anyway.

rvnx··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
Because of move fast and break things mentality. Let's say if ChatGPT was launched respecting GDPR, or respecting copyrights, they would have reached nowhere.
rvnx··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
Part of it is also a certification circus.

For example, with Copilot, you get a contractual pinky promise that they cannot access your data.

Can engineers really not access ? Can the police really not access ?

It's like AirTag for example. Apple cannot access it because it's scientifically "impossible" by design, but if they sign-in to your account, well it's over.

Once Apple fills the right audit / certification / paperwork they will be able to enable that feature. It could also be a negotiation lever.

rvnx··on GrapheneOS user reported to authorities for using GrapheneOS
If I would push it further to the extreme, "you" are inviting yourself. You're not a guest yet, you're inviting yourself, showing up at a stranger's door asking to be let in.

Though I agree with you that analogies have limits.

I am not even sure of anything at this point, especially after reading the comments around, almost as if it was bigotry.

It could be a cultural / education difference too; I was taught that local cultures are equally legitimate as much as my personal culture.

rvnx··on GrapheneOS user reported to authorities for using GrapheneOS
If your guests are bad mouthing you in a private WhatsApp group, would you still invite them ?
rvnx··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Similarly, doing service desk, the thing that makes me flip the table is how people start by explaining what does not work, instead of explaining what they are trying to do.
rvnx··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
Obviously not. Blowing things up is the reason for rocketry to exist and its historical basis.

A fun fact about SpaceX:

Remember our esteemed national American hero, and spiritual father of SpaceX, Wernher von Braun.

Wernher wrote a book about Mars referring to "The Elon", an imaginary Mars governing body.

The father of Elon Musk claimed that Elon's name came from there.

Well at least, that's what he claims. Reality doesn't matter if you have billions and power. History can be rewritten.

rvnx··on 32GB of DDR5 now costs $375 – AI shortage continues to squeeze PC building
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has warned Samsung and SK Hynix they could face 100% tariffs, framing it as a choice between paying a 100% tariff or building memory fabs in America...

Punishing instead of supporting.

One theory: they will need to throw away all these Nvidia cards in the trash at some point right ?

Because what to do with power-consuming outdated hardware ? let's say 5 years from now ?

They will need new RAM.

I wonder.

You now have the worst of both worlds.

You report yourself to the police for trying to hack into a computer-system and you report yourself to the website that can now decide to sue you.

All of that without any benefits.

rvnx··on Investigating how prompt politeness affects LLM accuracy (2025)
They are already taking it over, more and more court judgments or life-impacting reviews (e.g. for your diploma) are AI-processed. If you know how to prompt them, you can pass these reviews.

Your bank account, your immigration risk, etc.

rvnx··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
You are absolutely right, DuckDuckGo is better for porn than Google, but if you want even better results you can use Yandex.

For other things, Grok is quite fast — Perplexity too

rvnx··on Spanish court declines to fine NordVPN over LaLiga piracy blocking order
LaLiga is relying mostly on EU Copyright Directive and DSA to enforce their blocking rights.

EFF is a Californian organization holding a big treasure chest (60M USD), in surplus of donations, that does not operate in European courts.

In terms of donations, even if you would give them 50'000 USD it's a rounding error in their budget (just put it on the pile).

For example Xnet can actually go to Spanish courts but they have less money in total in their bank than the average salary of a random EFF employee.

So just claim it is Claude

rvnx··on Anna's Archive hit with $19.5M default judgment and global domain takedown order
Why LLM companies that depended on Anna's archive end up so clean ? Looks like Anna's archive was doing the dirty work, and the LLM companies were reaping the profits (and ironically still do, as they hold the largest databases of pirated content in the world).

Is it because the law doesn't apply to you when you have 1B USD ?

Ads are the main business model of browsers.

If search ads are blocked on search engines, then there is no revenue for the browser. It's that simple (on top of that Brave has other revenues, but the majority is search ads).

So it's a game of hoping that the majority won't change the default.

This is the main reason Brave does not block search ads specifically by default, but still block the other ads. Blocking the other ads there are no consequences, since anyway this revenue is not shared back to the browser.

This is why the business model of Brave is cynical.

-> It's the same model as AdBlock and the "Acceptable Ads" (block all ads, except the acceptable ads, unless you disallow them)
