Yep, my code redeemed immediately. They even changed the copy to reflect this: "You can redeem your offer code using the link above, even if you have previously redeemed a different DigitalOcean promotional offer, credit card required for activation"

This isn't correct. They are checking for THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana.
rustyfe··on Ask HN: Are good jobs a myth?
I don't have a meaningful response to this, I just wanted to say this is both good actionable advice and really inspiring. Thanks for this.

This is hard to believe. 10 permute 5 is just over 30,000. Unless stamps were less than 3 cents, that scam wouldn't work.

First class stamps have been 4 cents since 1958. Not to mention the labor of preparing 30,000 index cards.

TL;DR Your dad should have gotten a job.

I mean, my application to Google will be like my application to MIT. It'd be nice, but it's not realistic enough to bank on. You're right though, I should be thinking more big picture about the craft. Thank you.

See, you created a job you wanted instead of begging for one someone had. Clearly a better position. But how did you demonstrate the capability to be useful without a track record?

I've thought about that. That getting hired is basically just a sales problem.

They don't just not teach it, they teach engineers to be actively hostile to it.

rustyfe··on Ask HN: Are good jobs a myth?
That's true. I mean, I'm very respectful about the work I am assigned, when I manage to beg someone into giving me something to do. Everyone is very nice to me, I'm just... Bored. But good advice on building networks. Who you know not what you know and all that.

I will take a look at Innumerancy. A more technical exploration of the same topic sounds right up my alley. Thanks!

Quick, someone write a python script to perform common character substitutions on a list of the most common New Year's resolutions. If this catches on you might have a useful brute forcing dictionary.

I just finished reading The Signal and The Noise by Nate Silver. It was an interesting read, but it felt a bit shallow in it's analysis.

I was feeling the need for some fiction, so I picked up Vladimir Nabokov's translation of Eugene Onegin by Aleksandr Pushkin. Not sure what to think about it yet, but it's interesting reading Nabokov's analysis and seeing into his mindset a little. Sheds some light on his work as well.
