russfink··on Fallout from the AWS outage: Smart mattresses go rogue
“Brewing…” et tu, smart coffee maker?
russfink··on Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum
Ransom? Or is that too risky?
russfink··on Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum
Or stolen for ransom. That might fetch the largest payout of all.
russfink··on New Work by Gary Larson
Realizing the lions’ taste for red meat, the Spamalopes remained calm, but wary.
russfink··on Are Motorcycles "Donorcycles"?
I rode for several years. Such a study needs to take into account the age, accident/ticket rate of the rider, and type of bike. While I was cautious, riding vs driving a car for economic reasons, there were plenty of testosterone-laiden youth who drove up my insurance rates.

Digital nomad grant - free housing and workspace to the recipients. Deadline 15 Oct. https://arcticdigitalnomads.com/grant/
russfink··on Meta-analysis of 2.2M people: Loneliness increases mortality risk by 32%
Liability that one of them will don a Robert De Niro grin and say, “hey kid, wanna get out of here?” and the youth will oblige by lowering the roof on the GT and cranking up Deep Purple’s Highway Star as they peel rubber from beneath the pastel peach awning, thousands of foot pounds of torque expressing a shared joy in a cloud of smoke and a squeal of delight.
russfink··on High-power microwave defeats drone swarm
Pika-CHUUUUU! Wow. Now only if they could weaponize lightning strikes.
russfink··on Man still alive six months after pig kidney transplant
So we’re getting close in the US government is putting certain types of poor people in internment camps.
russfink··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
That’s a fragile, sort of roundabout comment. I can think of 90125 reasons closer to the edge that will move us back two squares.
russfink··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
I hope you are speaking with tongue in cheek. Security is the main reason to keep current with updates. They address various “CVE” reports and go beyond to patch things not reported by CVEs.
russfink··on How to build a coding agent
Can someone please explain the axes: Oracle, Agent, high safety and low safety?
russfink··on PySnippets – easily write, run and share Python in the browser
Can it do live sharing?
russfink··on Herbie detects inaccurate expressions and finds more accurate replacements
Can someone explain why sqrt(x+1) - sqrt(x) is “inaccurate” for all x>1? Inaccurate how, and why, and why is 1/(…) any better? Thanks.
russfink··on A Danish zoo is asking owners of pets nearing life’s end to donate them as food
If they euthanize a sick animal, won’t the euthanasia drug be consumed by the predator? What about the disease? Also, don’t predators go after live things that give chase?
russfink··on The Responsibility of Engineers in the Age of AI
Very well written.
russfink··on Neural networks that learn non-linearity without activation functions [pdf]
One reason might be expressing the constructs in a different domain, eg homomorphic encrypted evaluators.
russfink··on Ethersync: Peer-to-peer collaborative editing of local text files
Having trouble finding plugins … mousepad?
russfink··on Maintaining weight loss
Not recommended but “almost.” Eat a lot of watery foods - watermelon is the best: sweet, bulky, satisfying. Celery to hold that peanut butter. And like others said, go with protein.
russfink··on Man wearing metallic necklace dies after being sucked into MRI machine
It was easy to remove. No shutdown required.
russfink··on Man wearing metallic necklace dies after being sucked into MRI machine
I entered an MRI room once when my wife was getting ready to be scanned. I had a metal Cross pen in my shirt pocket. Although I was 10 feet back, the pen flew out of my pocket, across the room, and stuck to the magnet. It was scary.
russfink··on Will the Fear of Being Confused for AI Mean That We Will Now Write Differently?
I wish I knew how to (ask an AI to) characterize this style. Is it always three examples? Nice formatting and bullet points? Evenly issued, lengthy and didactic explanations?
russfink··on Local LLMs versus offline Wikipedia
Are you not of the body?
russfink··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
Genuinely curious - could heavy marijuana use cause confusion between landing gear and fuel cutoff? Or some other drugs? (Wondering if they screen pilots for alcohol before they board an aircraft.)
russfink··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
I’ll take this as an honest question. The simple answer: too much mass, no clear landing path, not enough speed or altitude to turn to find one and glide to it. In short, not enough time. Once the engines cut, that thing probably dropped like a brick.
russfink··on Red Hat Technical Writing Style Guide
Active voice makes it clear who or what is performing the action. “The connection is then terminated” vs. “The client terminates the connection.”
russfink··on Graphical Linear Algebra
It reads as if Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory) wrote it. Especially chapter two. I love the humor!
russfink··on How was the wheel invented? Computer simulations reveal its unlikely birth
More specifically, how the wheel and axle could have been invented. TL;DR: copper mines - the constraints prevented the typical log rolling/moving.
russfink··on Gemini 2.5: Our most intelligent models are getting even better
Why don’t companies publish hashes of emitted answers so that we, eg teachers, could verify if the AI produced this result?
russfink··on A simple search engine from scratch
To understand and comprehend something in fullness. To reach the depths of the concept, idea, or entity so deep that you are practically one with it. (This is per my recollection of the Heinlein story, where grokking one in fullness was the highest form of respect.)
