ruskyhacker··on Ask HN: How to discuss a business idea without it being stolen?
I'm probably not the correct person to answer this question, but I can share my experience at least!

I was incredibly concerned about this with an idea I had. A shared the 'idea' with a mentor of mine, who was 'well off' and not technical. This mentor agreed that before I involve other people I should speak with a lawyer to see how to best protect the idea because like you it seemed to be (and researched to be) an original concept.

He hooked me up with a lawyer and we discussed the options for copyright, patent, etc. Long story short the decision was that there wasn't a clear method of 'protecting' the idea due to it's complexity. I'm not saying you shouldn't consult a lawyer - there are certain things that are easier to trademark, copy, or patent. My idea is/was a biz to consumer saas if that helps any.

I didn't feel any better about sharing with others after that meeting - my mentor had reached out to his contacts who were more aligned with getting startups off the ground to as about what to do in this situation. What was explained to me was that what really matters is how fast you can go from zero -> 'minimum viable' (which could just be detailed ins and outs of all the pieces) -> poc -> 'market'

If there are high startup costs and you can't create a shotty demo or something, then sit down and write as detailed of a 'plan' as you can. Doesn't have to be a business plan, because depending on your expertise you may not care about monetizing it and can utilize people who can bring ideas to the table later on. What you're trying to do is document and plan out how it will work in as much detail as you can. Draw pictures, write process, write pseudo code, mock up layouts digitally if you can, basically whatever you possibly can get into a some kind of organized 'plan.'

While you're doing this it'd be smart to have an audit log that can be validated somehow. Pictures of you working on it where it's clearly visible, certified mail copies of it to yourself, whatever you can do to prove it was you who did this, and this is when it happened.

That's all I've got, I hope it helps. For what it's worth - the idea I'd come up with still doesn't exist for the most part out in the wild, and it has been roughly 4 years. The startup costs for me aren't high, it was the lack of knowledge to get it done myself that caused me to only do the planning bit I described above. My circle of people to tap at the time with the know how wasn't what it is now. (I got more into programming and it widened how many other programmers I know)

Perhaps someday I'll get going on a shotty demo of it to pitch ;)

Funny, sawthisbon discover and immediately wondered if this was on HN.

Anyway, I have a few of these I use for pentests / audits https://electroniccats.com/store/huntercat/

I've caught and reported two pumps at fuel stations near where I live. One of them I watcheded when the police showed up and with the fuel station employee removed the ble module storing the data.

ruskyhacker··on Ask HN: How does my bank not know my income?
They probably have a very good idea.

That being said I suspect this could be a mechanism to "verify" or confirm things are still accurate or current from what you last said it was.

Imagine you telling your CC company you make 250k a year to get a higher limit but only make 100k. Perhaps that credit card account has a large amount of cash flow due to expenses being refunded from an employer or something. A way to find that out could be to ask you to update what you make every so often hoping you'll do the "math" wrong.

If it's a CC company they might also just want to give you a higher credit limit - it's how they make money after all!

ruskyhacker··on Ask HN: What software related tasks can be a successful consulting business?
Integrations!!!!!!
ruskyhacker··on Ask HN: Why don't dating sites allow you to code your own matching function?
I feel like if your site requires people to "code their own" xyz - the people using it would already likely be "matches" for each other because they're all devs haha. Maybe I'm not understanding the question here though...
ruskyhacker··on Ask HN: Is it possible to have a profitable site using Googles Ads only?
I keep seeing comments from folks here indicating it's possible.

I've had nearly 50 over the last 15 years and have only ever spent money on Google Ads

I think it all boils down to what the function of the website is. In my case most of the sites were e-commerce so having ads was more detrimental. If your site basically runs itself and you're not selling a product, service, or trying to flip the site I'm guessing ads are probably one of the few ways to be profitable.

I just can't see a company being like "just ignore the pedos and chomos or whatever" when it's something like a super high majority of folks literally despise.

I've learned to not be shocked over the years, but this just seems a bit over the top (the report on Glassdoor) to be true. What benefit or positive business impact would Patreon have by doing something as ludicrous as this?

Lol at that last statement.
ruskyhacker··on SEC charges VMware with misleading investors by obscuring financial performance
Anyone ever had a VMware audit?

Let's just say, Deloitte - the absolute shit show they contract to do the audits are dumber than a box of rocks.

I know a company that had to pay ~600k because their contractor (Deloitte) flagged several environments as "production" even though they were provided with all the data proving otherwise.

By the time VMware laid down the hammer it was apparently "too late" to argue as it should've happened "a month ago". Neither VMware or their contractor could apparently do anything about it.

The 600k was apparently worth it to the business to just take it in the nuts to maintain partnership/status/whatever.

Straight extortion / scammy. There was even one environment which consumed about 70k of the 600k fine that straight up was licensed properly with proof of all purchasing - but their shitty vb scans were mixed up with another environment (in the same overall biz) and falsely marked as not compliant.

I get it, I'm sure NFR licensing is being used rampant and improperly by all-sorts of business and there were certainly cases here and there with this org, but nothing even remotely close to 600k

That whole process was worse than the "v dash trash" you would have to put up with ok a m$ audit.

ruskyhacker··on Poll: Do you expect/want to see salary information in a job ad?
Yes, but I would be more happy if it wasn't straight up "advertised" in the ad, but was readily answered when asked without expectation.

What?!

Here's my thought - doing it like this it keeps it slightly competitive. Sure if it's easy to ask for the salary range, people can and will ask. But do you want to be fighting loads of people for a particular job due to the dreamers with low skill /chance clogging up the machine because they saw a shiny 180k salary?

Okay, but why readily answered when asked? Because it's a huge time suck. If I have to jump through 11 hoops only to find out it's for 20k less in the 0 hour it's wasting all our time.

Let's not forget, we work for an organization to be paid. At the end of the day the marketing of a job for a held hostage pay range isn't going to fly 9/10 times.

This guy gets it.

Fortunately and unfortunately (we likely won't see him be burned at the stake) he'll be out of the game soon. Throwing shade at the devs as well as pissing off the consumers, pure marketing GeNiUs

ruskyhacker··on Controlling My Family’s Smart Home Is Driving Us Mad
Unfortunately only us technical folks have it good.

I solved this problem by using three methods - homeassistant is number one. The second, is only integrating / purchasing devices that I can either manually flash open source software on (think tasmota for instance,) or the solution's API has been re'd. The third thing is Shelly. Shelly products are the shit. I'm not a shill either; I've purchased every single Shelly I own (~40.)

Shelly makes automating lights and switches amazing because you don't replace the switch, they're literally wife proof. I've also flashed all my Shelly devices to communicate to homeassistant directly, however they have native non cloud integration capabilities.

Again, this doesn't solve the main problem of fragmentation - home assistant addresses this by being a black box, but it's not for normies, I don't know how it ever could be. It has gotten super slick though. The other issue is stuff like Shelly requires a technical brain - the way they're installed you'd be playing with mains current, and no Suzie home maker should be doing that...
