ruph123··on Jony Ive on Life After Apple
There is one design directions that I am really salty about which Ive (reluctantly) innovated: protruding phone cameras lenses.

I read somewhere that he was not happy about that but had to go with it. But since the iPhone 6, the bumps have grown bigger and bigger and are almost like status symbols now. The worst are protruding lenses on iPads which cannot lay flat on the table.

That and magic mouse charging port if course but luckily this did not catch on with other vendors.

ruph123··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
Gmail != Email.

There are many other usable (and free) email providers out there. It doesn't have to be Google.

Did they photoshop the glasses onto the two doctors in the photo below the announcement video? Looks fake as hell.

The NumWorks calculator looks very interesting. Too bad it does not have a RPN mode.

Otherwise the SwissMicros calculators can be recommended. They are all RPN and are modeled after iconic HP calcs. They are just very pricey, especially for non-graphing calcs.

ruph123··on Mimic 3 by Mycroft
Since when are they having concrete plans and shipping windows to sell Mark II? A few years ago I signed up to be informed when Mark II finally sells. I already had given up.
ruph123··on Thunderbird 102
I really wish they would do away with tabs. Somehow this has always bothered me about TB. I don't know why. Maybe because it adds more layers in ehat should be a clean interface. Or maybe it is just tab-anxiety I have from using browsers. I just don't want to micro-manage tabs in my email client.
ruph123··on Webcams aren't good enough
Does the software you need to configure the camera (and run color calibration) run on Linux?
ruph123··on A group of open source Android apps without ads or unnecessary permissions
Some functionality is missing in the Fdroid versions though. E.g. the calendar app is missing the comprehensive editing tools from the Google Play version. The solution? Installing the binaries right from their Github repo.
ruph123··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
Because of this I started using an electric beard trimmer with really low trim length (0.4mm). It does not result in a clean shave but close enough (and I don't look like a teenager).

But the best part: You pay once 60-100 bucks and can keep using it for a few years (in my case 7 years as I just had to replace my old one).

ruph123··on Ubiquiti vs. Krebs
I read in another HN thread that Ubiquiti was actually not hacked but that a former employee leaked information and tricked Krebs into believing he was a whistleblower.

Is there a more detailed write-up somewhere about what happened exactly?

ruph123··on Adding HLSL and DirectX Support to Clang and LLVM
Can someone please explain why this is is problematic?
ruph123··on Alarm raised after Microsoft wins data-encoding patent
If the original creator patented ANS and then just basically waived the patent for everyone, would that not help the situation with other implementations that are "close enough" to the original?
ruph123··on On Leaving Facebook
How are people in the US difficult to fire?
ruph123··on Deep Learning Interviews book: Hundreds of fully solved job interview questions
The last 5 textbooks I bought new on amazon had similar problems. Totally unacceptable. I started returning them and (because most were exclusive to amazon) started buying them new on ebay with great results.

ruph123··on Show HN: Meetup with other travelers in a new place
Interesting behaviour when you right-click and drag the map around, neat!
ruph123··on A Python Guide for the Ages
Yeah, unfortunately it hasn't been updated in a few years. Real bummer.
ruph123··on A Python Guide for the Ages
The best cheatsheet which I have ever seen (besides maybe cheats.rs) is this Python cheatsheet by Laurent Pointal, absolutely outstanding in many ways:

ruph123··on Science upside for Starship
It is one thing to be against a Mars settlement and another to be against space exploration.

E.g. it would serve the latter better if we would explore Venus, Europa, Titan, etc. than trying to live underground on a dead poisonous planet.

ruph123··on Fingerprints can be hacked
The uniqueness of fingerprints is also questionable.

e.g.: https://mathblog.com/are-fingerprints-unique/

ruph123··on German state planning to switch 25,000 PCs to LibreOffice
I always wondered why they had to create their own fork. I had the feeling that this is unecessary maintenance work that they took on and a "not invented here" philosophy.

Why not just use one of the avaible distros or why not even make a deal with SUSE (a bavarian company) to have a subscription model with support directly from experienced distro makers? Surely they could've made sure that all important features and workflows can be implemented.

Of course this would've needed to be a public bidding but if Red Hat gets it or SUSE does not really matter and surely is much cheaper than Microsoft licenses.

ruph123··on Doubling the PinePhone storage speed with a soldering iron
Good point, thank you I did not know about SMD soldering kits.
ruph123··on Doubling the PinePhone storage speed with a soldering iron
Thank you!

And uff I don't think I or my TS100 can do it. Might try though as my PinePhone is collecting dust right now anyway.

ruph123··on Doubling the PinePhone storage speed with a soldering iron
Is there a more gentle guide with photos how to do it, so once can judge if this is a task that one is able to do?

Just "desolder this resistor and solder it here" does not help me to judge if it is within my soldering ability to accomplish it.

ruph123··on 4Privacy App
I am really interested in this in general, I just don't know if I can make my people use yet another privacy-focussed app.

This is not strictly for communication I know but if there is any collaborative component, it will be a tough sell to convince others (esp. in the US). Most people have gotten tired of this and just don't care, it is quite frustrating.

ruph123··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]
Same. It feels like the "have the cake and eat it" situation for me who switched over from iOS.

I was worried that some apps might not work but that is not the case. Everything from banking apps to password managers just works fine with the only exception being NPR One (which is hilarious).

They are really doing an outstanding job and I do not miss anything on here besides a Apple/Google Pay NFC solution. But that is quite ok.

ruph123··on Fourier Series Visualisation with D3
I don't have a license (anymore) sadly. But thank you!
ruph123··on Fourier Series Visualisation with D3
Wow this is pretty much what I had in mind, thank you so much!
ruph123··on Fourier Series Visualisation with D3
Great tip, thank you!
ruph123··on Fourier Series Visualisation with D3
Have there been any new interactive learning materials come up that explain signal processing, fourier series, laplace transformations, etc. to mere mortals?

Everytime I want to understand control theory better I stumble over this and the literature is often quite (deliberately?) obtuse.
