rubzah··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
The part that burned was damaged from early on, likely at, or right after, separation. So the integrity of that flap was already very compromised. I actually thought the flap would disintegrate on re-entry with that kind of damage. But no, they even put full stress on it, unfolding it while supersonic through the atmosphere, like a champ.
rubzah··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Yes, it was not the explosion what done it.

It looked like it happened during separation somehow.

rubzah··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Even Steve Jobs, who was by most accounts a pretty cold fish (his many other qualities notwithstanding), said something similar. By memory, he said something like: With your kids, it's as if they carry your heart around outside of your body. Which I found super touching and apt.
rubzah··on A statistical analysis of Rotten Tomatoes
High critic score / high audience score = Good

High critic score / low audience score = Paid-for hype, or politically motivated reviews

Low critic score / high audience score = Possibly a good movie

Low critic score / low audience score = Bad

rubzah··on The death of partying in the USA
> I would likely be the parent in the playground just sitting by himself while the daughter plays, maybe reading a book

Just do that and don't feel bad about it. I saw a bunch of parents like that at all my kids different sports and other events and I always respected them for at least showing up. Honestly, it's worse to sit and make forced awkward smalltalk, because you feel you have to, than just relaxing and being yourself.

rubzah··on The death of partying in the USA
It was always mostly people trying to recreate what they had seen in movies a party should be.
rubzah··on What methylene blue can (and can’t) do for the brain
That is what the parent is saying. Just because it no longer works as a stimulant, it doesn't mean treatment should be discontinued.
rubzah··on The Danish Ministry of Digitalization Is Switching to Linux and LibreOffice
Sweden should start by not using the banks for their national digital ID scheme.
rubzah··on Gabon longs to cash in on sacred hallucinogenic remedy
It's not just the spiritual side either. Traditional knowledge is also about stuff like exactly how much to use, how to prepare it, what to use it with (and not to use it with), what time of day, beneficial activities before and after, and so on. The human body is a complex system where all of these things cause complex interactions that can influence efficacy. Traditional medicinal use is full of these kinds of 'full package' treatments, a lot of which is lost when you just bottle some ingredient.
rubzah··on InventWood is about to mass-produce wood that's stronger than steel
The pressure treated wood used for railway lines is already damned near impossible to get rid of.
rubzah··on The great displacement is already well underway?
> I don't hang out here

From the OP:

> the other hundreds (thousands?) of hours of my time in the last year trolling [...] the YC message board

That's here, though.

rubzah··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
TL;DR: In three years, the LHC created 29 picograms (2.9 × 10-11 g) of gold from lead, with each gold atom only existing for a few nanoseconds. Pretty cool but not a great business case yet.
rubzah··on Careless People
Then you realize that Facebook has been extraordinarily active banning Palestinian posts and accounts over the last year. So the "casual indifference" is at the very least selectively applied.
rubzah··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
The national e-ID scheme should obviously be government run.
rubzah··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
So how about a decentralized currency that no one controls? Preferably digital. If only we had the technology ;-)
rubzah··on Neonatal fungi: lifelong metabolic health via macrophage β cell development
These are fungi in the gut, as far as I understand. Seems weird that they would affect the pancreas. Wonder if that is the case in adults too? (not affect development, but some other effects)
rubzah··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
Picking them off the stem you might occasionally get some juice on the fingers. Not a big deal but more than you'd get from a Quest bar or something. Seedless is a lot more common in the US than EU, I think.
rubzah··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
shilling for the grapes industry
rubzah··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
Stems, a bowl to hold the grapes, somewhat sticky fingers, seeds (unless you get the engineered no-seeds variety). Yeah, can't vouch for the logistics of grapes.
rubzah··on I ate and reviewed every snack in our office kitchen
Most fruits are also somewhat acidic, which helps digestion and insulin sensitivity.
rubzah··on Everyone at NSF overseeing the Platforms for Wireless Experimentation is gone
The "additional money supply" is a (hidden) tax on people with fixed incomes and no hard assets.
rubzah··on We're bringing Pebble back
I want a screen that is always on and good-looking. Until then, it is worse than my mechanical watch. Color eInk would probably be ideal.

Besides that, I'm down for whatever.

rubzah··on One in four 2020 Tesla Model 3 failed the Danish periodic inspection in 2024
All other cars would be model year 2020 or older (since inspection becomes mandatory at the four year mark). So best case, this is compared to cars of the same age, and if not, even older cars, which does not make the Model 3 look any better.
rubzah··on I Will Fucking Haymaker You If You Mention Agile Again (2023)
OP, you're a whiny child yourself. The one thing that won't do anybody any good is infantile rage, except sadists might get some fleeting satisfaction from watching you suffer.

I've been a part of daily standup routines that were somewhat useful and some that weren't. Even in a good one, where some useful exchanges happen, most of the time is still wasted on irrelevant stuff. Best suggestion I have is to let each person speak if they have something to say, and otherwise we move on. Having the opportunity, with everyone present, is useful I think.

This does not strictly follow the formulaic Agile Standup, but agile is about "people over process" anyway, so you can tell that to the Agile Coach.

rubzah··on The Origins of Wokeness
Paul Graham is an important figure in tech (and arguably even more so on this site). If he comes out on one side or another of an important issue, it is interesting to this community. IMHO. If Zuckerberg had written TFA, I'd be interested too.
rubzah··on Blue Origin New Glenn Mission NG-1 – Live
"Dark Sky" funded by the Pentagon. Sounds chipper.
rubzah··on Stay Gold, America
Reading Jeff's story, perhaps he should put some of the money towards fighting alcohol (mis)use in society. So many families destroyed like Jeff's, not to mention being a major component of expenses in the health sector.

Not to downplay the other contributions which are fucking awesome.

rubzah··on Atlassian warns of high severity vulnerability in multiple products
At least this one does not turn every Confluence server in the world into a crypto miner, like the one a couple of months ago :/.

That time Atlassian refused to let us upgrade our servers unless we renewed our license (a year old), since they no longer sell or support the on-premise versions of their products. Felt a bit taken hostage there.

rubzah··on Lebanon’s underground cryptocurrency market
Do you have experience in Lebanon? The only areas that are well managed (relatively speaking) are the ones run by Hezbollah.
rubzah··on Truck Art in Pakistan (2018)
It's basically just people who go deep on the spirituality part of religion, with very intense prayer and meditation, very focused lifestyle, etc. Religiously they generally adhere to the mainstream schools of Islam and consider themselves part of the wider religious community.

The more recent movement of Salafism, centered in Saudi Arabia, has made Sufism one of their targets in their quest to 'clean up' Islam, since it doesn't fit into their back-to-basics view on religion. So there is quite a big schism now between this movement and its followers, and the general community (for whom Sufism is an ingrained, and often treasured, tradition).
