rubzah··on Java 26 is here
Did everyone just agree to forget about Gradle? It was everywhere not too long ago. I think I even prefer it to Maven, in a choice between a rock and a hard place type of way.
rubzah··on Home Assistant waters my plants
That's what I am doing too, though I did have to drill out some wall to fit it, in some cases.

There is another option that I don't think many people are aware of: You can put a battery powered relay downstream of the (dumb) switch, and have it broadcast events when power comes on and off, to control other smart devices, which just have to listen for the events (via a broker like HA).

rubzah··on Making WebAssembly a first-class language on the Web
Yeah, I don't think it bears out that DOM operation invocations constitute a major bottleneck for a lot of web applications. Certainly the execution of those operations (like layout invalidation and calculation) can be expensive, but those would not benefit. I can't think of applications with a massive amount of DOM calls that would benefit from lower latency.
rubzah··on Yann LeCun raises $1B to build AI that understands the physical world
All your base are belong to Yann LeCun.
rubzah··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
Same one for five years (Samsung Flip 3). It does have a crack down the middle. It's not enough to bother me, but you're right, early gens do have that problem (believe it is fixed by now).
rubzah··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
The difference is if you are actively filming, or the camera is set up to film by itself. Security cameras are in the latter category and therefore can only be used on your own property (you can allow someone else to do it on your own property, such as a security firm).
rubzah··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
An important distinction is that you are allowed to film/photograph when you are actively doing it (so the glasses do belong in that category). You're not allowed to set up a camera to autonomously film/photograph outside of your own private property.

Besides that there is the issue of publishing said footage, as others point out.

Flip phone user for five years, will never get a slab again. It's weird to me more people don't use them, I guess they're expensive still.
rubzah··on Martial arts robots at 2026 Spring Festival Gala [video]
I hate you. This will be real in <5 years.

Also, current tech could be useful as a shopping assistant, to carry the groceries for people who can't, for one reason or another. Though the other post about tipping safety does have a point.

rubzah··on Maine’s ‘Lobster Lady’ who fished for nearly a century dies aged 105
> Fishing's not catching

Sounds like something from an MLM seminar. "Telling's not selling!"

The Slopocalypse - an unexpected variant of Gray Goo:

rubzah··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
The future of the programmer profession: This AI-generated mess of a codebase does 80% of what I want. Now fix the last 20%, should be easy, right?
rubzah··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
Oh wow, somehow I was not aware of how capable this technology has become, looks like a major game changer, across many fields.

In the near term, it could be very useful for sports replays. The UFC has this thing where they stitch together sequences of images from cameras all around the ring, to capture a few seconds of '360 degree' video of important moments. It looks horrible, this would be a huge improvement.

rubzah··on Eat Real Food
Instead of more meat, eat more eggs. Eggs are as good a protein source as meat, down to the same amino acid groups (unlike other protein sources, like plant-based). People used to worry about cholesterol but that has pretty much been put to rest by now.
rubzah··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
Once again. It is not greenfield projects most of us want to use AI coding assistance for. It is for an existing project, with a byzantine mess of a codebase, and even worse messes of infrastructure, business requirements, regulations, processes, and God knows what else. It seems impossible to me that AI would ever be useful in these contexts (which, again, are practically all I ever deal with as a professional in software development).
rubzah··on A spider web unlike any seen before
Incidentally, this method cured me of arachnophobia. Having it trapped inside the glass, yet in my hand and up close to take a closer look, allowed me to gradually see them as not all that scary. It's like that therapy where you gradually get closer to the thing you're afraid of (desensitization?).
rubzah··on Lessons from 14 years at Google
This is OP's lesson 20: Eventually, time becomes worth more than money. Act accordingly.

I’ve watched senior engineers burn out chasing the next promo level, optimizing for a few more percentage points of compensation. Some of them got it. Most of them wondered, afterward, if it was worth what they gave up.

rubzah··on Delivery robots take over Chicago sidewalks
I live in a place with excellent bicycle infrastructure. All the delivery people ride electric bicycles. A robot would be that, minus the human. So probably better in terms of energy expenditure, cost, etc.
rubzah··on SoftBank sells its entire stake in Nvidia
It's because they are playing with other (dumb) people's money.
rubzah··on Schleswig-Holstein completes migration to open source email
Maybe both? The EU could have a reference implementation, without mandating its use. The current EU model requires each member state to implement everything from scratch, obviously with subtle incompatibility that never gets fixed.
rubzah··on Schleswig-Holstein completes migration to open source email
> since the code may not be maintained and there may not be any support.

Isn't this an argument in favor of open source? Zoho may not be around forever, but open source code is, and you could just pay someone to work on it.

rubzah··on McKinsey wonders how to sell AI apps with no measurable benefits
Dot-bomb 2.0.
rubzah··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
There is simply no excuse for blocking the entry of food into a region wholesale. For that alone they should, at the very least, be an outcast in the international community. But here we are.
rubzah··on Exploit allows for takeover of fleets of Unitree robots
The Turing Police.
rubzah··on The Ruby community has a DHH problem
DHH has great instincts when it comes to programming and technical projects, but he is not a very smart guy about anything else. Further, he is a bit of a low class buffoon. So just use his stuff and ignore whatever else he rants about on his own time and property, this is the only way to get by in life. You couldn't read a book, watch a movie, or enjoy any music, if you constantly had to vet the authors against your own political views.
rubzah··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
Yeah, that never happened.
rubzah··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
Been using a flip for four years (Samsung) and will buy another when the time comes (not necessarily Samsung).

Ever wanted a smaller phone? That's a flip phone, it just happens to expand when you need it. Ever drop your phone and damage the screen ? The closed flip phone is super sturdy. Ever wanted to put your phone on the table and use it with one hand, laptop style? Flip. Even in general use, having it slightly bent towards you is a nicer experience that a fully flat phone.

Yes, it has a slight crease in the middle, it has never bothered me even a little. And now, there's an actual microcrack across the crease, doesn't really bother me either, but for some people it might. Look forward to improvements in the next generations.

rubzah··on How the Slavic migration reshaped Central and Eastern Europe
Does anyone know what happened to the original people of Poland? I.e. the article explains that almost the entire pre-existing population of Poland was replaced by Slavs around the 5th/6th century, but not through war or conquest. So where did all the people go, and why?
rubzah··on Voyager – An interactive video generation model with realtime 3D reconstruction
It's 2D if you only have one eye.
rubzah··on SpaceX's giant Starship Mars rocket nails critical 10th test flight
The damage was visible long before the explosion, during ascent (not sure if anyone has explained how it happened). Though your point still stands.

I was very surprised that that flap still held up during the stress testing on atmospheric re-entry.
