>> Linux doesn’t have a single set of headers because programmers in the 80s didn’t know better.

I would argue that it does, but because its apparently illegal (obvious exaggeration alert) to package all the parts of a single entity together in one package, it just seems like it doesn't, where as on Windows there's a single package (the Windows SDK) that contains the majority of the relevant stuff.

I do however 100% agree with you on linking to shared libraries. The way Linux compilers handle that is fucking stupid.

>> I feel like, to say that, you haven't tried helping many older adults — or even middle-aged adults — use technology.

I have actually. And do so pretty regularly.

But the comment I was replying to was presumably not about older adults, and more so about younger parents of minor children, whom I wouldn't normally class as "older adults", and for the most part I would think know basic skills like using a search engine and/or Youtube (or some other video sharing app)

rstat1··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
>>It's not "tons of missing functionality"

Okay. Sure.

rstat1··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
>>with all its other issues - those claiming otherwise have stockholm syndrome

What issues? Works just as well as Chrome ever did (before they started blocking extensions at least) for me.

rstat1··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
Its called Lite because it has tons of missing functionality from the not-Lite version that make the not-Lite version more effective as a content blocker.

What people do in their private time is none of anyone's business. Period.

Especially the government.

In this day and age lack of knowledge is no excuse.

Especially when everyone who would have this particular "problem" has access to various search tools and video websites that would explain "solutions".

rstat1··on Jemalloc Postmortem
Go is kinda of a pain to build from source. Build one version to build another, and another..

Or rather it was the last time I tried.

rstat1··on Jemalloc Postmortem
I agree to a point. grpc++ (and protobuf and boringssl and abseil and....) was the biggest pain in the ass to integrate in to a personal project I've ever seen. I ended up having to write a custom tool to convert their Bazel files to the format my projects tend to use (GN and Ninja). Many hours wasted. There were no library specfici "sysroots" or "toolchains" involved though thankfully because I'm sure that would made things even worse.

Upside is (I guess) if I ever want to use grpc in another project the work's already done and it'll just be a matter of copy/paste.

I take it you're not big on the whole "actions speak louder than words" thing are you?

People keep saying this, but that's been every phone I've ever had. They all get hot in hot weather and under heavy use.

rstat1··on Mozilla Firefox – Official GitHub repo
I was gonna say they already were and had been for a while, but apparently a few weeks ago they moved back in to the main Firefox repo.

Which means I guess they're back on Github now.

rstat1··on Hyperlight WASM: Fast, secure, and OS-free
>>Where is WASM in the browser really used apart from crypto miners?

Amazon's Twitch service (and by extension also AWS's Interactive Video Service product that uses all the same backend stuff). Their video player is either fully a WASM thing or has some WASM components, I'm not completely sure which.

I got the same email, and I agree they should've taken responsibility for their obvious design flaw and fixed it themselves free of charge.

Also I will again agree that my Batch 4 (or was it 5? I can't remember) FW13 is the most I've had to repair a laptop as well. I'm just gonna chalk that up to them technically being pre-full-production units and hope they have improved their QA in the later gens.

However I will also add that I like having the option to fix it myself (which is something I have some amount of skill/enjoyment in doing) which is certainly NOT an option you'd have with that M-series MacBook (or really any other brand of laptop)

Just so you know I did the soldering fix and its been working just fine for me, for w/e that's worth to you.

Also you're welcome! They have been pretty hit or miss on pushing updates to LVFS so I absolutely understand why you might not have known.

I had that issue on my batch 5 11th gen. There's an issue with the rechargeable CMOS battery they included (that isn't present on the later 12th and 13th gen) that when it stops taking a charge your laptop stops turning on unless you do some arcane process to reset it.

They provide a "repair" kit that's basically a dummy CMOS battery that hooks in to the normal power system that prevents the issue from occurring again.

Also just FYI, there was a BIOS update in June of last year (3.20).

rstat1··on Firefox removes "do not track" feature support
Hi adblock user here, who uses adblockers for 2 reasons: 1) Security, because ad networks can't be bothered to properly vet the stuff they shove down everyone's throats and 2) On mobile at least, its impossible to read most websites due to the sheer number of overlaid videos and other such BS.

That's it. That's not entitlement. I just want to actually read the stuff on a website. If websites could do ads that weren't trying to monopolize attention and/or trick me in to downloading malware, I'd definitely think twice about my use of a blocker on that website.

Sure there are some that feel like because its on the internet that's its free and they are entitled to it. But I'd wager most ad block users fall in to a similar camp as me.

Plus most adblocking extensions these days are also tracker blockers as well, so there's some element of privacy protection in play there as well.

rstat1··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US
I feel like stuff like this shouldn't be anywhere near the internet. Partly because of reasons like this where the manufacturer can just randomly decide to disable it, but also because its usually the software equivalent of Swiss cheese.
rstat1··on Valve developers discuss why Half Life 2: Episode 3 was abandoned
>>They almost ran out of money making HL2.

To hear them talk about that, it seemed like that was due to their legal issues with Vivendi Universal. I wonder if the same would've been true if those events didn't happen

No Notepad is a perfect example of this. It doesn't need any sort of "AI" BS.
rstat1··on An Update on Apple M1/M2 GPU Drivers
There's a difference between posting a sub-only link to that's intended to be shared in moderation, and posting a link to pay walled article as if to expect the clicker of that link to pay for a sub to that website just so they can read that article.

Its a pretty absurd expectation.

rstat1··on An Update on Apple M1/M2 GPU Drivers
>>(end-users, gamedevs, review/benchmark sites, SoC vendors) will evaluate GPUs based, in some small part, on how good their geometry shader support is

Do they? I can't remember ever seeing any mention of Geometry Shader performance in a GPU review I've read/watched. The one thing I've ever heard about it was about how bad they were.

rstat1··on Parks on the Air
My dad and I have been participating in this for a bit (he's the actual operator, I just log stuff), and it's been pretty fun. Gotten me out to local places I hadn't been before despite living here nearly 30yrs.

Our setup isn't really all that fancy, he takes one of his normal radios and with the help of some kind of special adapter, connects it directly to one of those big 12v deep cycle marine batteries. Antenna wise we have this triple magnet mounting thing that we drop on the top of his truck, and one of us (meaning me) screws one of several different band specific Ham sticks. We usually just stick to 20m because that seems to be where most people are. Logging is usually just me writing stuff down manually on a legal pad, but this last time he found a logging app that seemed to support POTA specifically so we just used that on a laptop connected to my phone's hotspot feature.
