Keep a copy (cloud) and a backup (offline) for all you own data.

rspoerri··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
I allow her to watch me work (mostly text documents), and we often search for images of an animal or object that she wants printed (today we searched for stars). Also, she can video-phone the grandparents, which is not that addictive from my experience.

My screensaver (animated colours) is problematic. Watching a video of herself or the grandparents on the smartphone can be problematic as well, but at least they are typically only a few seconds.

So yes, it's a thing of the medium. But most media for kids are colourful, highly animated, childlike characters and voices. Optimized to catch their attention for a long time.

Also, the media for kids are barely matching the level of the kids state of knowledge. I use words she understands describing things she asks me about, a TV show never does that.

rspoerri··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
Understanding of what is happening is often very limited. When I read books or talk to her, I sometimes use words that are unknown to her, she only started asking for the meaning of them recently (she just turned 3). So she will probably only understand 20%-30% even when she understands conversations quite well at home. She is still missing cultural context. She is only starting to understand the difference between a living and a stuffed animal.

In an animation movie somebody might hit somebody else, which appears funny to an adult. A child might just take this as normal behaviour and repeats it the next time she sees somebody and doesn't understand why it's not funny.

Understanding the real world is difficult enough for her.

rspoerri··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
She was so focussed on it and started crying when we hid it after only a very short time. This is not normal a behaviour. This only happens with things that are very addictive (also for example sugar). I do understand that not everybody can do it like that, but if you can create such an environment it's much better for them (in my opinion).
rspoerri··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
My 3 year old watched TV for the first time for 2 minutes in her life (it was hard hiding it from her in an airplane on an overhead screen) and I can tell that TV is generally bad for kids at that age.

These arguments make no sense at all.

- Solar power is already starting to make so much surplus during the days, and it needs battery power to store. Cars are an ideal object to use surplus energy. Cost will continue to sink.

- Creating additional charging infrastructure costs very little, because power lines are available everywhere. Fuel stations might be currently broader available, but even maintenance on fuel stations is likely more expensive than building new charging infrastructure. If more electric cars are available, more charging infrastructure will be built.

- Europe has very little oil / fuel reserves and is heavily dependent on other countries. As we have seen in recent years this is a major long term problem.

rspoerri··on Org Mode syntax is one of the most reasonable markup languages for text (2017)
If org more was as successful as markdown it would likely also have a lot of unstandardized additions.
rspoerri··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (Jan 2026)
An vscode extension to organize my lectures using a kanban style structure, saved as markdown files and allows specific md-formats to convert into presentations or other documents (currently marp (pdf, pptx, html) and i'm currently looking into pandoc). It's a vibe coded project i worked on in the evenings over the last 3 months.

rspoerri··on Ask HN: By what percentage has AI changed your output as a software engineer?
It changed my ability to create something in the evenings where i would normally be to tired to work on a project. Also it changed my work to be a frontend designer/tester instead of programming, i was able to iterate on ideas much faster and create a much more usable product. But getting the code to work flawless is a pain and it makes me clean up and re-test tons of times.

I am working on this: https://github.com/ludos1978/ludos-vscode-markdown-kanban

rspoerri··on Is your AI system illegal in the EU?
The AI Act applies to you if:

- You provide AI systems used in the EU (regardless of where you’re based)

- You import or distribute AI systems in the EU

- You use AI systems in your business operations in the EU

In other words: if your AI touches the EU market in any way, you’re covered. Anytime an EU user consumes your product, you’re accountable.

rspoerri··on Show HN: Learn German with Games
I thought about that probem as well, and i think an important aspect that you could improve is by showing the correct answer much more visibly.

Right now it's hidden in a corner (iirc), so that i can barely see it. By showing the task and the answer next to each other when doing it wrong, the players might learn something of it.

What i typically recommend my students is to try to transform a learning task in a way that you need to apply a skill, without needing to do the skill itself.

For example playing english text adventure games is a very fun way to learn english. Players need to figure out what to enter using the keyboard and they use classical methods of figuring out the correct content (dictionary, translation) and they still have fun doing so. Even if it's hard work (not so much anymore with deepl etc, but back in the day it was). This can be applied to tons of tasks. - make sure you are not cheated when trading in a game. - keep up your reaction time by playing race games (a very good thing for elderly who want to keep theyr driving skills) - train your dictionary skills in scrabble. - ...

rspoerri··on Show HN: Learn German with Games
It's still not learning, it's verification of existing knowledge. It might be more fun than taking tests, nevertheless you cannot learn knowledge by testing knowledge, you can only verify it. Only if the user answers correctly you might consolidate the already existing knowledge.
rspoerri··on Show HN: Learn German with Games
I don't see how people can learn a language by tests, which are only telling you if you did it right or wrong. I can see how this is used to verify the existing knowledge, but I don't see any usage in learning.
rspoerri··on Glasses-free 3D using webcam head tracking
From my experience this only ever looks good in a recorded video. Because we are used to assume that the real object captured within the video is perceivable in a stereoscopic form. But it‘s not. The real usage of head and viewtracking is as a controller, not to improve immersion.

rspoerri··on AI is not killing jobs, US study finds
this is a very misleading title. the study says ai is killing jobs and creating different jobs. it's only an economist view that could justify saying it's not killing jobs.
rspoerri··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2025)
creating a kanban editor for vscode that can integrate images, videos etc. i use it for planning and creating lectures over several weeks. it can export to a marp compatible presentation format. it's coded with claude, because i would not have had the time to do it othervise.

rspoerri··on Vibe Coding Is the Worst Idea of 2025 [video]
i have 20+ years coding experience, but i am a teacher not a programmer. i never coded ts. so i can easily review and fix code, but i dont know functions and parameters.

3 days ago i started modifying a kanban editor that was available for vscode. i wanted to have it compatible with an obsidian markdown kanban format i was using. but obsidian is to slow for me.

after 3 days it's not only working, but as far as i can tell it's a way better kanban editor then most of the ones i tried on vscode's extensions. of course i have specific needs (no dates, deadlines, priority), but a nicely tightly layouted interface with fast editing possibilities.

i would not have gotten this far in 2 weeks without claude code. i know i havent reviewed most of the code, except saving and loading. so it will likely look bad.

rspoerri··on Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong?
This is not universally a problem. In switzerland you receive a letter with a qr code, which with your username/password can activate a app which does a 2nd factor authentication, but it also requres to scan an qr code from thd web every time you login.

Setting it up is a pain, also it‘s impossible to transfer to another device without the original barcode.

But it seems pretty convinient for me an very secure. Login with account-id and password, scan a qr-code with the app and verify the login in it.

Still phone communication is very insecure…
