rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: What are you interested in that the fewest others are interested in?
Collating a list of mysteriously murdered CEOs and high ranking engineers since 1998.

The death of this engineer for EarthLink at 18 (while he also studied at MIT) and which allegedly involved a religious cult based in Oregon, is a good place to start.

Only about 2.5% of suicides are jumping to ones death also (although the percentage is double for women, and this number is US suicides in 2018 keep in mind).

rshnotsecure··on Remember Martin Luther King Jr.?
The power of MLK's charisma is underestimated even today despite him being well known and appreciated. The guy was actually only 5'3" and had to stand on a pedestal to speak usually.
rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: False advertising on stock vector websites?
They could be making the money back on Ad Fraud. Perhaps the images and files they provide contain some kind of tracking script. It's easy to imagine giving someone some JS code to paste in instead of a simple image link.

Also this could be just simple fraud. Freely acquiring others IP at no cost, and then almost giving it away because your Cost of Goods Sold is something close to $0.00.

rshnotsecure··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
"There are two powers in the world, the United States and the CIA."
rshnotsecure··on U.S. contributes 5 times more ocean plastic than previous estimates
That is correct but the spelling of that name would be "Boniface".
rshnotsecure··on U.S. contributes 5 times more ocean plastic than previous estimates
The author of this article is "Bonface Landi". His bio describes himself as a mentor to up-and-coming writers. I can find no evidence of his existence online outside of his bio on the linked site, another site that describes him instead as "her", and a LinkedIn page with no profile photo and 1 connection.

Who is this person? "Bonface" is also not a plausible first name.

rshnotsecure··on Emails with Intercept Editors Showing Censorship of My Joe Biden Article
Does Glenn Greenwald not also own The Intercept? He was drawing a 500k salary and was also the CEO no?

Did he lose equity at some point?

rshnotsecure··on 4chan reveals online voter exploit that can be used to cancel ballots?
The robots.txt file of Oregon.gov is somewhat suspicious. There seem to be lots of hidden executable files as well as pages with GET queries.

Because of the amount, I would guess some of the executable files lead to web shells. I am less sure of, but still somewhat confident, that the open GET queries might be pages where someone has discovered a SQL injection flaw.

They are likely trying to prevent these pages from appearing on Google where a regular user might notice. Will try to look shortly on desktop and update further.

rshnotsecure··on Tell HN: Rackspace apparently lost some storage volumes
A few months ago I found that Rackspace had left open their prod logging system for their global load balancer / firewall system (known as BlueFlood).

Reporting the open Elasticsearch server to then was one of the most bizarre experiences of my life. Ultimately the system was exposed for about 2 weeks.

You can find some screenshots of what their backend looked like, which came in at about 3 TB daily, here: https://blog.12security.com/rackspace-bluefood-breach/

rshnotsecure··on Datacenter Vulnerability
Yes this is true. Also there is nothing to stop someone from simply buying a data center, or several, out right.

I don't mean to be sarcastic here, but why spend $40 billion developing some new weapon tech that might or might not work, when instead you can set up a proxy Private Equity firm and buy out all a country's data centers?

Also by the way inside of a data center there is tons of segregation between server racks, dual power sources coming from opposite sides of building, etc. Even if you were given a decent time window a single person could only do limited damage.

rshnotsecure··on The FBI Team Sent to ‘Exploit’ Protesters’ Phones in Portland
I encourage all to look at the DNS hosting records for fbi.gov. They are bizarre. There is a big identity question with who the FBI is right now. I'm not confident any unit or person is from the FBI until I see strong evidence / identification they bring with them.

A good example is how more and more subdomains keep slipping behind CloudFlare. Those could be hosted anywhere.

Another example, which I spoke to the FBI Los Angeles office this morning about, is Infragard Los Angeles. They literally have subdomains hosted in mainland China. What is going on here? [1]

rshnotsecure··on Developing for the Semantic Web
The semantic web was at one time "the next big thing". It was one of those technologies that topped the Gartner Hype Cycle sometime during the first Web 2.0 years.

Interesting to see it back again. It had many problems but was always an interesting concept.

rshnotsecure··on State sanctioned secrecy: NSA's criminality shield
I submitted a Cryptome post that might help some [1]. Scroll down and read points 1-5.

Being familiar with the original #BlueLeaks story is also helpful to understand [2].

rshnotsecure··on State sanctioned secrecy: NSA's criminality shield
Recently a local data center provider in Central Texas was found to be a major nexus for Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) material. Data Foundry, formerly known as Texas.net.

It also now appears to have been a major collection node, codenamed WAXTITAN, for the NSA's BOUNDLESS INFORMANT program.

They had been accused back as far as 2013 by a former sysadmin for hosting CSA, and as recently as last year the OAG in New Mexico repeatedly asked them to do something about the content [1].

This data center provider was recently outted as part of the #BlueLeaks breach, because all 78 DHS Fusion Center sites were hosted there.

Several engineers in Austin, Texas, including myself, have been interviewed by the FBI. It is clear it was not a covert entrapment program or anything like that.

This all brings us to the question of, if the NSA can work with groups and on servers distributing enormous amounts of videos of child sex, they really can do anything they want can't they?

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
I appreciate this question and it made me laugh, especially seeing it on HackerNews.
rshnotsecure··on US government accuses TikTok of being a mouthpiece for the Communist Party
Tiktok/ByteDance was interviewing pretty furiously in the Bay Area last year. All around I heard good things about the process.

An interesting thing about their interview process is that they often required a night time slot for at least one round.

This was because many teams had their direct manager or VP in mainland PRC, which has a 15 time hour difference.

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: What Is the Future of Software?
A lot of improvements to the C programming language dealing with security and memory handling. This has been put off for about 40 years.
rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: What domain registrar do you use/trust?
Google Domains I have liked. There is DNSSEC, support for some of the more exotic records. You can secure access, if you're really motivated, with G-Suite Enterprise with Titan Key + Advanced Security turned on.

Otherwise AWS Route 53.

rshnotsecure··on How to catch a spy that is using a numbers station – The KGB Experience
Today we're seeing number stations move off of ham radio and onto protocols like MQTT.

Additionally a lot of "weather stations" around the world are simply number stations. They vary the numbers reported, and wherever they diverge from whatever is determined in advance as the "canonical" source is how information is communicated. This paragraph and the above are just my personal observations please note.

Lastly good examples of weather stations in general (not actual spying things please note) can be found here [1] and here [2].

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: Does anyone else notice increased incompetence?
I would like to comment on this. My real name and also email I believe are in my profile, as well as in a couple of past comments.

Incompetence is sometimes a brilliant intelligence and counterintelligence strategy.

The old saying of "don't suspect malice when stupidity is possible" or whatever was a favorite saying of Aldrich Ames. And of course that is what one would say if they were doing what he did.

It's also a great recruitment strategy for spies. The CIA realized by the mid 70's that hey didn't have to ask ppl to defect, or to pass secrets, often they would just say, "can you make sure that if this security concern ever gets filed, you just just make sure it gets lost, or that you are really confused and don't understand?"

Incompetence happened a great deal in the Soviet Union. It mentally killed people to see it everyday. People had just given up on society and accepted a corrupt incompetent way of life. Ultimately, incompetence, even if begun as a malicious strategy, eventually inspires it in others, which is tragic.

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: What mistakes did you make when using AWS for the first time?
CloudFormation instead of Terraform.
rshnotsecure··on Albuquerque Police Engaged in Secret Intelligence Gathering Operation
The City of Albuquerque's site was maintained by Netsential, who in turn used "Data Foundry" in central Texas as their colo / cloud provider.

It appears that the specific colo being used was also a major NSA bulk intel collection point. The site was codenamed WAXTITAN and it was part of the BOUNDLESS INFORMANT program (we know this because of the Snowden leaks).

I wrote a small script to take screenshots of every DHS Fusion a Center site that was part of #BlueLeaks [1]. Some of the sites are very strange looking.

Data Foundry and Netsential were also part of a series of bizarre allegations made by a former employee back in 2014 and posted to Cryptome.org in some detail. They were serious enough Data Foundry had to write a series of articles and posts denying then. I tried to merge what we know now with what was originally claimed back in 2014 here [2].

rshnotsecure··on Dupes and Fellow Travelers (1949)
1930's and 1940's was called the "golden age of fronts" for exactly this reason.

Highly recommend looking into the institute of Pacific Relations (IPR) our of Hawaii. Basically a group of outsiders conned one of the Rockefeller's into funding it throughout that time and even through the depression.

rshnotsecure··on Solar proton activity may trigger high magnitude earthquakes
Recently looked into state of earthquake predicting and was somewhat shocked / horrified.

One of the best experts we had, Jim Berkland (who was highly controversial), pioneered to this day one of the most empirically supported techniques for predicting earthquakes...missing cat (specially cat) notices in the newspaper. The guy only had a BA too. I was horrified when I read this, but significant enough results were achieved and the field is just about devoid of anything with predictive power currently sadly. Also the underling statistics were done in the early 1980's and forms of media change, so I'm not sure if the technique would even yield usable results today.

Other things that are interesting about earthquakes:

1. The moon plays some role. The gravitational pull of the moon is enough to influence the tension on the crust. Scientists have struggled to yield anything predictive from this, but the math suggests the forces must have some effect

2. Plate tectonics plays less of a role than previously thought. The classic example is China. No major plate boundaries where new crust is being formed (like off the coast of Japan) or of volcanic hotspots (Hawaii), yet an absolutely devastating history of earthquakes that are well recorded going back 3,000 years or so.

3. The influence of large weighted bodies on earthquakes. Again back to China, where it is thought, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has done fascinating research, that big enough fans form pools of water that destabilize the underlying crust.

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2020)
I was an enormous supporter of 18f when it first came out. But the results have been horrible / awful in bizarre ways. We aren't talking in money terms, lots of disciplinary and security issues.

What happened? Is USDS somehow different from 18f?

rshnotsecure··on Ask HN: Older friends being targeted by Google ads for funerals and cemeteries?
80% of the funeral homes in the US are controlled by Providence Equity. It is likely them. [1]

I don't have the link, but the funeral home that had 100+ bodies piling up in NYC a few weeks ago was theirs.

rshnotsecure··on Albanian Civil War
Civilians across Eastern Europe protested and helped bring about the fall of communism based on their belief that the West would bring a superior way of life, government, and economy to their countries.

For whatever reason, it all failed. Assuming slightly higher oil prices than we have now, life under the USSR would likely be better.

Some particularly egregious things the West / Wall Street did:

1. No plan to absorb the massive amount of laid off secret police and military members. These ppl would turn to organized crime very quickly. Same mistake made in Iraq in 2003.

2. Giving Russia garbage loans they were in no position to pay back and had to be repaid in dollars only. An absolute disaster that Goldman Sachs was mostly responsible for.

3. EU was completely unprepared, for what has now become, the greatest migration in human history. The best and brightest left Eastern Europe in droves, causing massive brain drain that helped usher in the collapse of regime after regime.

4. Sending a CIA team to Moscow in 1996 to directly override the wishes of the Russian people. In defense, the USA was worried in a reasonable way that the communist party would win in a landslide at the polls. But regardless that should have been their choice.

5. Not focusing on Afghanistan after leaving in the late 1980's, letting jihadism further spread to Chechyna and the devastating war from 1994-1996 their. Causes terrorism on a 9/11 scale in Moscow, hundreds of Russian tanks destroyed, just insanity.

rshnotsecure··on Jacques Cousteau’s grandson wants to build the ISS of the sea
Jacques Cousteau, and really many prominent oceanographers / explorers (Ballard, who discovered the Titanic, comes to mind) have a background in espionage. Getting a large international joint effort off the ground coming from that field...can be difficult.

Recently Alexandra Cousteau, the grand-daughter of Jacques, had her name surface in regards to Epstein and whatever operation he was running.

rshnotsecure··on Should the ICANN do something about domain squatting?
The number of TLDs should not have been expanded so greatly I think. The decision to do this in 2012/2013 makes enforcement very difficult at best.

Great example is https://aal.army

Is it an official US Army site? I've inquired in the past. No one knows...

rshnotsecure··on 'Coup 53' tells the story of 1953 campaign by MI6 and CIA to oust Iran's leader
I see this story often, and it is basically true.

I would like to remind everyone though that for every regime change the US engineered, the KGB was responsible for many times more.

Part of the USSR's philosophy after all was worldwide revolution that was to be exported to all countries.
