rshlo··on Which Distros Work on New Windows 8 Machines
same here. ordered two Lenovo laptops and they were both allowed to switch between legacy and UEFI.
rshlo··on Google Disabled map API access for Volkswagen website
Actually that a great thing. Shows to hackers that even with billions of dollars, you can still make one stupid mistake that ruins your website and reputation.

Someone that will look on this on the business side could say: if VW isn't meticulous on their website, where else do they make mistakes?

rshlo··on Want to learn to code? Don't copy and paste, type out other people's code
I'm a CS major and coded all my life. The best way to learn is just to give yourself tasks, like building something specific and then try to make it. From copy and paste you just learn the syntax, which is useful but not that much. From building something from scratch you learn the principles which is far more important.
rshlo··on Show HN: the app that powers our order fulfillment warehouse
That's a great solution and a great starting point for further optimizaion in the future.

As mentioned here before, I was surprised to see that this is no shipping/inventory solution for small businesses. I've searched a lot and all I can find is high end solutions for large enterprises.

rshlo··on Gmail.com was down
IMAP works for me also with Thunderbird.
rshlo··on Uber triumphant
As far as AirBnB goes, it seems that they didn't predict all the outrage. Their just using it for their PR.
rshlo··on Show HN: myStorify.com - storify your photos
Looks great, but just a quick one: don't charge $5 for premium product, it just doesn't like premium. Either give all features for free for launch period or charge more.
rshlo··on A billion dollar software tech company is founded every three months in the U.S.
Great and inspiring list. But I think there should be a difference between companies that crossed the $1B worth in the open stock market, and companies that got this value by external purchase.
rshlo··on Show HN : My weekend(s) project - Strapfolio
I really think that you might want to give it for free in a "Beta phase". Get some traction, add features and design and then charge for it. As said before there are much more robust themes for $10 more.
rshlo··on Is Facebook becoming the next MySpace?
if facebook is myspace and google+ is dead on arrival, what tool a normal person have to share photos and stories with his close friends and family? there is still a need for this kind of tool.
rshlo··on Poll: Should we push the YC deadline back by a day because of the storm?
Yes. Extend by a week even, but only for those who submitted at least once before the storm started.
rshlo··on Show HN: my weekend project, Quotably
really cool and nice. I will just add that you can use Amazon Associates to tag the links to the books and earn a few dollars out of it.
rshlo··on Happy 20th Birthday, IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad
I really think that are still the best piece of laptop hardware around. Nothing beats my X200 when flying for 11 hours straight. Happy birthday Thinkpads!
rshlo··on The Mail Pilot Public Beta
I really can't understand why there is no trial period, maybe even for 14 days.
rshlo··on NFC enabled business cards
That's a nice idea and execution. But I really think about the role of paper business cards today. Is it still a necessity?
rshlo··on Ask HN: We are 23 and 24, should we apply to Y Combinator?
Why not?
rshlo··on Show HN: Sleepio - how I cured my insomnia, turned into software.
Would be happy to know about this too. Seems great!
rshlo··on Tel Aviv Meetup?
I think that a Facebook group is better for all discussions:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/278515712253665/

If anyone are in, I suggest Sep. 13 which is Thursday and it's great for a toast for Rosh Hashana.

rshlo··on Your startup is not a startup, it’s just a website.
If it makes money it's a business. If it doesn't makes money than it's a problem.
rshlo··on JavaScript for Cats - An introduction for new programmers
great idea, looking forward for the rest.
rshlo··on SMS Inbox Zero - get there with SendHub
Just a quick one: I didn't knew SendHub before and it took me a while to understand what the company offer. Only with the video I've understood the product. I think it would you used some of the text from the video, like "separate your personal life from your work life" in the front page. Other than that, looks great!
rshlo··on Being a Developer Makes You Valuable. Learning How to Market Makes You Dangerous
The aim of a founder is not to be the best marketer or developer. It's goal should be knowing just enough to hire the best people in every field and lead the team. This what makes a great founder.
rshlo··on How This Guy Lied His Way Into MSNBC, ABC News, The New York Times and More
I've been a long time journalist in my country, and I've got to tell that this is really disturbing. This is not only about journalism, but about pure trust between two human beings. As a journalist (unless it's a company or a story with an angle) you really don't expect people to lie. Why? because as human beings we don't expect someone to lie, just for the sake of it.

I think that the state of journalism these days have been greatly discussed everywhere. Nothing new to add on that. But it's really disappoints me to find out you can't trust no one.

rshlo··on The Many Sides of Jack Dorsey
Got to admit: this quote seemed like a parody to me at first.
rshlo··on Watch what you store on SkyDrive–you may lose your Microsoft life
no response from Microsoft on that? They should at least email them and ask them if that's what they intended to happen with the service.
rshlo··on Six Impossible Problems
I wish this brilliant minds were put to solve more urgent problems in areas like water and energy, than gaming.
rshlo··on Ask PG/HN : Replacing Email - What problems/solution comes to your mind?
email doesn't need any replacement. it's a fantastic messaging protocol. It's used by millions and every system supports it. Maybe in the far future it will disappear as other messaging protocol will rise, but we still use phones and snail mail, and there are very old. What need to be replaces is the bridge between email and todo protocol. The task management tools, even now, are not solving the problem of intelligent task management and creating more work than reducing it. You have to file, categorize, make priorities, or even type the tasks yourself. That's the reason people don't use them and use email instead as a task management tool - which it doesn't support.
rshlo··on Trello is now half million strong
What languages is Trello based upon?
rshlo··on Peter Thiel gives new class of students $100K to forgo college
The "dropout of college mania" will hurt America in the long run. The most talented young people are pursuing gold rush ideas instead of investing in deep learning. College leads to grad schools and grad schools created phd's. If something is broke along the chain, the result will be catastrophic in the long run.
rshlo··on What is good customer service?
great customer service starts with a near perfect product. In a perfect world you would need customer service at all.
