rrouse··on Startup Business Development Posts
The tip here, as written, suggests that it works because there is an implicit endorsement:

"As soon as your prospect sees you were referred by their superior, you become important. The likelihood they respond skyrockets. Put yourself in their shoes…what’s worse than someone potentially wasting 15 minutes of their time? Blowing someone off who their boss wanted them to talk to."

I grabbed one at random and thought it was a pretty sleazy thing to do (my opinion only)

rrouse··on Y Combinator is funding the future of spam in Windows
The cool thing about Mac applications is they are self contained. Very rarely do you see an actual installer. Uninstallation is usually just deleting the application from the Applications folder.

I wish other operating systems did it that way. It's very convenient.

rrouse··on Ubuntu surprise
I'd agree, especially with this "you can touch it" text being included.
rrouse··on Rails is omakase
Rails Core. I don't think he actually has Ruby core access like Aaron Patterson (Tenderlove)

Actually, I think he's sort of on vacation from Rails for the most part. He's got Elixir to work on.

As for the matter at hand, Bundler author Yehuda Katz said that checking in binstubs is actually not a good idea and is not recommended. DHH is going against the grain here.

rrouse··on Why I Love Being A Programmer in Louisville
When I worked remote for a shop out of London (I'm in St. Louis, Missouri, so the time difference is similar), I just woke up a bit earlier. It worked fine. I was there early enough to catch what needed to be done so they didn't need to stay longer just to accomodate me.
rrouse··on Raymond Chen patches MS Money executable to fix bug
I think a lot of us started that way. I learned to type playing Diablo 1 all summer when it came out (I was 12 or so). I also learned Visual Basic and C++ a year or so later trying to write hacks for the game. I can't remember how many times I locked up Windows playing with a debugger :)

It was good times. I miss it all the time.

rrouse··on Apple told to rewrite "Samsung didn't copy", post on front page until Dec 14th
They don't have to.

I believe it's done for two reasons.

1). Suspense during their events 2). To keep people from buying the older devices that they are about to discontinue. No reason to have to field support calls for people wanting to cancel/return their newly purchased items.

rrouse··on How Long Will Programmers Be So Well-Paid?
I got: "Watching each of the drown"
rrouse··on How Long Will Programmers Be So Well-Paid?
Is physical presence a requirement? You could try looking outside the area.

My current job is with a distributed team. I'm in St. Louis. Others are in Toronto, New Jersey (previously was in Spain), and South Carolina. It works well for us since we don't have "must-be-locked-down-on-site" sorts of projects (e.g. government contracts)

rrouse··on How Long Will Programmers Be So Well-Paid?
I would say likely forever. Programming is a commitment. Many people will just not be able to sacrifice other things in life to keep up.

Programming isn't a "learn it once and you're good for life" sort of career. Programmers have to keep learning every day to stay relevant.

rrouse··on Clever (YC S12) Lands $3M, Now In 2000 Schools
I wonder how some of the aspects of this works around FERPA (e.g. giving developers access to data)
rrouse··on Clever (YC S12) Lands $3M, Now In 2000 Schools
Sounds like a blast. Should I ever move out to the west coast, I'll have to check into Clever seriously
rrouse··on When A Daughter Dies
Unfortunate that human doctors have to spend so much time doing paperwork
rrouse··on Opal - Ruby to Javascript compiler
Not really. You're still using Javascript in the end.
rrouse··on Search.xxx Porn Search Engine Launches
Nice to see a registrar cutting out the middleman by preemptively squatting on some good domain names.
rrouse··on Meteor 0.4.0 released with new page update engine
Apparently this update broke the branch that contained any authentication/authorization code.

The lack of focus on security is hilariously bad.

rrouse··on Microsoft gets a new logo for the first time since 1987
They should go the "Prince" route. They should just adopt the 4 square logo as the official name for "The design style formerly known as Metro".

Brilliant

rrouse··on IEET Fellow Mike Treder is missing
The comments section of the main article (http://ieet.org/index.php/IEET/more/treder20120318) mentions people trying to do that.
rrouse··on Weigh more, pay more: Argument for charging obese people higher flying fares
Plus you have the bad publicity when people learn that they are being weighed for the flight. For many people, it's a touchy subject (like obesity or an eating disorder) that can turn traumatic pretty quickly.

Not a good idea at all

rrouse··on Looking for Technical Cofounder in San Francisco
Why wouldn't you look in Atlanta first? I'm sure someone is there.
