Saying Google didn’t have to reinvent containers when Google invented containers is .. something (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cgroups).

rrdharan··on Selling 'Ghost in the Shell'
I’m a fan of the ‘95 movie but one funny thing I always notice when rewatching it is how many different Human Computer interfaces exist in the movie’s world. There’re the robot secretaries, humans with extra mechanical fingers similar to the secretaries, three or four different neck and head and maybe eye(?) jacks, and others I can’t remember now. Makes for a fun drinking game.

rrdharan··on Meta Horizon OS
You don’t have to sign in to use an iPhone or Android phone, though you to have to sign in to use their app stores. Presumably with the advent of DMA though you can avoid creating an Apple ID or Google account if using a 3rd party store (though probably you’ll need some other account for that store, that’s how it always goes…).

Fe: gaming - yes, this is why Apple had separate IDs for gaming center.. and I think Microsoft does this too for Xbox vs Microsoft account?

rrdharan··on The lifecycle of a code AI completion
I see that it’s outlined there, I’m just curious how you gained the confidence to believe them (anthropic / openAI). Do you pay for auditors or do they have or provide some other evidence that gives you confidence that they won’t train on this data?

Neither Anthropic and OpenAI seem to be particularly mature organizations so while maliciously lying to their customers (you) about this would surprise me, “accidentally” not separating data sources would not be very surprising at all…

rrdharan··on The lifecycle of a code AI completion
> With Cody, we have a relationship w/ both Anthropic and OpenAI to never use any data submitted via Cody users for training and data is not retained either.

Can you say more about this? Is it public? Contractual? Verifiable somehow?

MySpace, Yahoo! Mail, eBay and probably other large scale operations were all built on PHP long before Facebook and I don’t think any of them were particularly ashamed about it.

Agreed I was just addressing the parent poster question of whether anyone can name a major bridge built in the last fifty years…
rrdharan··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
New York City has had two major recent new bridge replacements that probably about 20M people can name: the Mario Cuomo (formerly Tappan Zee) and the Kosciuszko bridge.

I’d argue the Bayonne Bridge raising kinda counts since it was almost a rebuild and more impressive in many ways since it stayed open the whole time.

Meanwhile in the San Francisco Bay Area they replaced the Bay Bridge…

rrdharan··on How to Start Google
In this analogy, the VCs are playing poker. The hands (or the cards dealt to the VC player in that hand) are individual startups.

Yes you can win if you are a VC. Less clear what to do if you’re just a card.

rrdharan··on What I wish I knew about ESPP and RSUs sooner
I see you made it to the fourth bullet point in the first paragraph of one of the two links.

It actually matters - or can matter, anyway - if you have any event pushing your income above $1M (if filing single) because of the change in deduction treatments.

rrdharan··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
I think there’s an EU vs US hedge here too, Mistral is likely to be more compliant or at least more favored by EU regulators (see how Spotify’s GDPR violation is playing out https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/13/spotify-gdpr-data-access-f...).

That case was about the (private) prison system itself profiting from the number of inmates increasing, not from labor the inmates were forced to provide.
