rrcaptain··on Amazon buys PillPack, an online pharmacy, for just under $1B
How many pills were you taking daily? The plastic waste of 4-5 pill bottles a month is quite large. But yes it is wasteful, just like the rest of for-profit healthcare.
rrcaptain··on Supreme Court Rules Police Need Warrant to Track Your Cellphone
>Difference is there would be no reasonable excuse to not even letting it come to a vote at that point.

There was no reasonable excuse in 2016 either lmao.

rrcaptain··on Supreme Court Rules Police Need Warrant to Track Your Cellphone
No, the GOP was planning to block Hillary's nominees as well.

And people did decide... In 2012 when they voted for Obama by like 51%. Lame duck presidents have gotten SCOTUS seats before. Reagan nominated and had a confirmation in his final year by a supermajority.

rrcaptain··on Supreme Court Rules Police Need Warrant to Track Your Cellphone
I mean, he's also sitting on a stolen seat. Not letting Obama nominate anyone was pretty BS. Obviously it wasn't his idea, but he's benefited from it nonetheless.
rrcaptain··on Twitter ‘smytes’ customers
Perhaps they still wanted the company for some reason? Someone knows. Time will tell most likely.
rrcaptain··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
Why would YouTube willingly run fewer ads? They were hardly profitable as it was, it doesn't make sense for them to "crack down" on channels all of a sudden by continuing to host them, but not running ads on them.

Not to mention part of the problem was YouTube not enforcing their content guidelines to begin with. Hate speech has always been against their content guidelines, they just never actually enforced it.

rrcaptain··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
I mean, that only happened because advertisers learned that the "independent" creators were all assholes. Like this started after advertisers started pulling out when PewDiePie didn't just apologize and admit he was wrong with the Nazi stunts. He threw a fit and advertisers realized that YouTube isn't really as good as they thought it was.
rrcaptain··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
He never really was, just people are paying attention now.
rrcaptain··on Bitcoin’s Price Was Artificially Inflated Last Year, Researchers Say
Except Tether hasn't actually proved they have the cash they claim. So why should we take their word that they're a peg system when they haven't proved it?
rrcaptain··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Exactly. The spirit of what they were trying to do got killed.
rrcaptain··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Because that turned out so well for Etsy.
rrcaptain··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Not too keen on GitHub being acquired. If Microsoft wants to do something good here, they should give GitHub enough money to form a Foundation similar to Mozilla. That would be the best way GitHub could pursue its mission.
rrcaptain··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
GitHub being bought buy Microsoft is like the opposite of what it represents. If Microsoft wants to pay for goodwill they should drop a big chunk of cash on forming a GitHub Foundation similar to Mozilla.
rrcaptain··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
>Why does GitHub need to be acquired at all?

So VCs can cash in.

rrcaptain··on Getting Google to ban our entire company
Eh. I doubt it's a PR move. More likely just some redditor making shit up.
rrcaptain··on ISPs Say They Don’t Make Enough Money
You mentioned problems scaling in the article. Can you elaborate on that? Will you update that later on?
rrcaptain··on Python startup time: milliseconds matter
Not sure why you're saying Python was used as an alternative to Ruby when Python is older than Ruby.
rrcaptain··on Python startup time: milliseconds matter
If you expect to need the performance of a statically typed, compiled language I don't see why you'd prototype in a dynamically typed, interpreted language.
rrcaptain··on Python startup time: milliseconds matter
Not all python programs are compatible with PyPy though. Nor do they get much of a performance boost by switching. Pandas and NumPy for example didn't work on PyPy until less than a year ago. And a good chunk of Python codebases are going to use one of those at some point.
rrcaptain··on Python startup time: milliseconds matter
Oddly that's one of the things I like most about python. The containers module has so many very useful things. Plus hash-tables and array-lists shouldn't ever really be the same thing.
rrcaptain··on Flask 1.0 Released
I mean Facebook uses PHP and that doesn't mean it's any more scalable.

I suppose they call it hack now though.

rrcaptain··on Show HN: “Is this loss?”: A TensorFlow Lite app to detect Loss.jpg
I mean, I wouldn't call this productive. But fun and useful most definitely.
rrcaptain··on A Well-Known Expert on Student Loans Is Not Real
Well it doesn't help that LendEDU is a YC startup.
rrcaptain··on A Well-Known Expert on Student Loans Is Not Real
Probably not. Unless LendEDU reached out the website personally. And it's unlikely rich investors will face consequences any way.
rrcaptain··on A journalism student who found out she won a Pulitzer in class
It's kind of ironic to hear that on Hacker News considering the decline in local investigative reporting is largely due to social media and ad-tech in general.
rrcaptain··on Ask HN: What is your favourite tech talk?
I'm pretty sure you can also backup stuff to the Internet Archive.
rrcaptain··on The Cold Case of the Max Headroom Signal Intrusion
No I'm pretty sure that's literally the plot of the book.
rrcaptain··on The Cold Case of the Max Headroom Signal Intrusion
$$$
rrcaptain··on Fuchsia is not Linux
I imagine that it makes any potential litigation or dispute much simpler. Even if the license is FOSS, any sort of litigation could have hundreds or thousands of parties involved.
rrcaptain··on Fuchsia is not Linux
It's kind of a meme at this point though. Shitting on other people's favorite language is a well honored SWE tradition.
