rpicard··on Ask HN: What is the best method for turning a scanned book as a PDF into text?
This open source tool would probably work well for splitting into pages, sending to an LLM of your choice, and getting it back into a structured markdown file: https://github.com/getomni-ai/zerox

I haven’t used it yet, since my use case ended up not needing more than just sending to an LLM directly.

rpicard··on Ask HN: Advice for someone entering their 30s
In the last year I did a lot of thinking along these lines (I’m 30 for context).

Until now I’ve spent a lot of my focus chasing credentials, even if I didn’t really realize that.

For example, having good schools, companies, etc (YC even!) on the resume.

All of that served me well, but I think now it’s important to switch to harvesting some of the fruits of that labor and deciding what I inherently want to pursue.

I get joy out of a bunch of things; spending time with my family, running a business, even learning and listening to my favorite podcasts. I’m much more focused on doing things that bring me joy now, and the choices I make are in service of that.

A few things I read last year that were influential for me:

Obituary for a Quiet Life (relatively short): https://bittersoutherner.com/feature/2023/obituary-for-a-qui...

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter

My tl;dr is really just the pursuit of love, joy, good health, and good money.

rpicard··on Vercel Fluid Compute
Love it! When I first learned about serverless as a vibe years ago it didn’t click, but it’s so clear to me that abstracting compute fully is a huge win as long as you can safely assume things about the way your code will run.

It’s interesting to see so many companies coming at it from different angles. Fly, Vercel, Cloudflare, Northflank, Temporal? etc.

Pretty much all the code I need for my work can run in GitHub Actions, so I’m not so much the target, but still enjoy watching the development.

If you can answer, what’s the overall initiative here for Vercel? Own all the compute, as opposed to just the front end ish things?

rpicard··on Ask HN: I'm a software developer with 3 years of runway. What do I build?
The short answer is build something people want. It’s really good advice from YC, and applies whatever your goals are (big software company or smaller niche businesses).

I’d just focus on finding problems and solving them, while getting people to pay to use them. Don’t overthink it!

You could also look for some part time contracting work in the meantime to keep an income and stay in touch with a professional network.

Congrats on the weight loss and fitness, that’s huge.

rpicard··on Ask HN: How do you read long HN threads?
I saw this on here from the prolific simonw: https://til.simonwillison.net/llms/claude-hacker-news-themes
rpicard··on Vercel Fluid Compute
This isn’t my area of expertise, but it sounds like the core innovation is that one compute worker can handle multiple requests like a traditional server would, but they’ll scale down a lot faster than you’d get with an EC2 instance for example.

Is that right?

rpicard··on Ask HN: Is transitioning to CS a bad career choice in today's AI-driven world?
Honestly I don’t think anyone knows what the future will look like. The changes are very big and real, and I wouldn’t take them lightly.

Still it’s unclear whether it means more CS jobs or fewer.

I suspect having a strong CS background will have benefits and open interesting paths either way.

rpicard··on YC Batch, Application Public?
Applications aren’t posted anywhere. If you were accepted, you wouldn’t likely be able to sell your share since it’s not really worth anything at this stage.

Make sure you only start something with people you trust and are all on the same page.

rpicard··on Down the rabbit hole: Implementing SSH port forwarding over AWS Session Manager
Funny to read this after seeing Fly.io’s recent blog about VS Code’s remote SSH agent: https://fly.io/blog/vscode-ssh-wtf/

I’m surprised this hasn’t come up more frequently. I’d expect a lot of security products to flag it as very much looking like malware.

rpicard··on Ghostwriter – use the reMarkable2 as an interface to vision-LLMs
Ha, automating the doing of the task is the next step.
rpicard··on Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation (2019)
My interpretation is really just having placeholder workflows that still require manual steps and maybe even print them out as text, but don’t necessarily wait.
rpicard··on Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation (2019)
I like this way of thinking. I’m working on a bunch of automations right now and using GitHub actions.

I find the idea of setting up “do nothing workflows” that I can compose and implement more thoroughly over time helpful. I’ll probably put this into use.

rpicard··on Ghostwriter – use the reMarkable2 as an interface to vision-LLMs
Will do! My wife and I love Harry Potter so I’m motivated to show her my investment in the tablet actually got me Tom Riddle’s diary.

I don’t use discord much but I’ll find you somewhere around here!

rpicard··on Ghostwriter – use the reMarkable2 as an interface to vision-LLMs
This is so cool. I’m going to try it this weekend.

I’ve been playing with the idea of auto creating tasks when I write todos by emailing the PDF and sending it to an LLM.

This just opened up a whole realm of better ways to accomplish that goal in realtime.

History on Fire is another great one. He’s especially interested in military / martial arts but it has a bit of everything.

I recently found Rest of World and I like it, they seem to be high quality: https://restofworld.org/
rpicard··on New Apple security feature reboots iPhones after 3 days, researchers confirm
The “run immediately” setting mentioned in the parent comments prevents this. I did this recently on my phone and can confirm it works.
rpicard··on Everyone is wrong about that Slack flowchart
Content aside (it’s good too), I love this blog and post visually.
rpicard··on OutRun: Open-source, privacy oriented, outdoor fitness tracker
Maybe that’s a good enough reason for me to get one.

Strava works, but I just don’t like how much they try to push on you. I just want to track runs and PRs and encourage my friends.

rpicard··on OutRun: Open-source, privacy oriented, outdoor fitness tracker
Can you record a run in there somewhere? Might just be bad googling, but I can’t see an option just using the phone.
rpicard··on OutRun: Open-source, privacy oriented, outdoor fitness tracker
I’m really interested in this, but it looks like it hasn’t been worked on in a while and there are some crash reports on the iOS store reviews.

I would love if Apple built some of this in native apps.

I do like sharing runs with a small group of friends.

rpicard··on Travelling with Tailscale
I set up Tailscale on my Apple TV at home and can use it as an exit node when traveling, so traffic still comes from my home IP.

rpicard··on Handbook of Applied Cryptography
Real World Cryptography by David Wong is a great book in this category.

Published in 2021, so it’s very up-to-date.

rpicard··on Using FIDO keys
AWS IAM supports multiple keys now! I think this was a blocker for using hardware keys on AWS for a bunch of organizations.

rpicard··on Heroku Is Down
I think fly.io is the new serious contender in this space.
rpicard··on Why I Work on Ads
Just wanted to mention I appreciate seeing a different perspective here.

I know there's a lot of negative reaction to it, and I can empathize with that because there's a long history of negative behavior by the advertising industry. But there's no doubt that there are benefits too, and seeing some nuance on HN is always a win.
