Did anyone else start getting lots of BBB spam coupon messages in the last few weeks? I'm getting several a day. No BBB even close to my area to use such coupons, if they are by chance real.
rpaddock··on The Sound Proof Booths of Silence
I just thought it would be cool to see how long people might last in such a room. It was not in my budget. So far at least.

Here is the Worlds Quiets Room, as of 2018:

rpaddock··on The Sound Proof Booths of Silence
The former Westinghouse Electric Sharon Transformer Plant is a 58-acre facility located in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. They built substation transformers there. To test them the rolled them into a sound proof room, on a rail car, to listen for hum. Lose windings would vibrate causing hum and generate damaging heat. When I was there I was told that if wanted to rent it, they would fix the 440V door system (someone took the cooper).

To give you a size perspective of this place, our tour guide, from the balcony, said "See that toy truck down there? That is a full size 18-wheeler." It took us a 20 minute walk to reach that full size truck that looked like a child's toy in this MASSIVE room.

rpaddock··on Remarkable (2020)
The reMarkable tablet was a great product, until they started uploading all of the contents in the name of syncing to the cloud.

I liked to use it with PDF templates. Download a PDF template and now it uploads the content in the name of 'syncing'. I've found no way to turn this miss-feature off. If you delete the data on the cloud then the next sync deletes it from the table.

This has made this device useless for professional people that are legally bound to not share data about clients, etc.

rpaddock··on Sony develops energy harvesting module from electromagnetic wave noise
While possible it is unlikely. It would take a considerable amount of time to accumulate that amount of energy needed from these sources. These systems are generally used for transmitters that transmit for a couple of seconds at most and may be off for the rest of the day. Enough energy would have to be accumulated to run the GPS long enough to get a valid fix etc.
rpaddock··on Sony develops energy harvesting module from electromagnetic wave noise
The rather obscure semi. company E-Peas has been making similar harvesting chips for a while:

https://e-peas.com/product/aem13920-dual-source-energy-harve...

The Nexperia chips are also worth looking at, in that they translate high impedance sources to low enough to charge a cap:

rpaddock··on Sony develops energy harvesting module from electromagnetic wave noise
" doesn’t damp and further load the system it’s being taken from."

Don't all of these Harvesting systems load a system? For example one of the transmitters somewhere. Yes it is microwatts and no transmitter will notice a single unit. However if we start to talk large quantity of sensors, who is really paying the price? Otherwise we are admitting that Free Energy is a real thing.

You and others may find the recently released Nexperia NBM5100 and NBM7100 of interest. While aimed at batteries it functionally translates high impedance power sources to lower impedance to charge up caps for IoT usage.

rpaddock··on Total Commander
"...disabled the search function in windows ... Why are they trying to make things difficult for people?"

If you do embedded system development it is best to turn Windows Search off.

Windows Search will write index files to devices that are not expecting to have such files written to them, which often bricks the devices. Old Freescale/NXP boards are particularly prone to this, until their bootloaders are updated, which can only be done on a Windows-7 machine.

Oddly if you do turn Windows Search off via registry key, then the Microsoft Store stops working correctly. I've never found that behavior documented anywhere.

rpaddock··on Movie extras worry they'll be replaced by AI. Hollywood is already doing scans
The 1981 movie LOOKER predicted this day, it also did the scans first:

"Trivia The first ever film to create 3D shading with a computer that produced the first ever CGI human character was the model Cindy (Susan Dey). This movie achieved this feat before Disney's more famous Tron (1982) hit the screens. The Web site Filmsite said of Cindy: "Her digitization was visualized by a computer-generated simulation of her body being scanned--notably the first use of shaded 3D CGI in a feature film. Polygonal models obtained by digitizing a human body were used to render the effects.""

rpaddock··on Voice Actor Turns Instagram's Terms of Service into 51-Minute Sleep Aid
From the article: "Instagram, like many social networks, is designed to get you to consume as much content as possible in a single sitting. "

The recently permanently disabled my account for violating their ToS. I've not posted anything on Instagram for years and what I did post, years ago, was related to our documentary Pain Warriors. Nothing in their explanation makes any sense to be cause for the account to be terminated. Not going to be getting anything from anyone in any 'sitting', by doing such things.

Also I had SMS Two Factor Authentication turned on. I know SMS has issues, at the time I enabled it, it was the only option. To file an appeal I have to login. They never actually send the SMS to my phone, so it is impossible to login to file the appeal. Many other people are having the same issue from my searching.

rpaddock··on TSMC faces $70M ransom demand following lockbit cyberattack
At least three of their Annual Reports indicates they knew of the risk of attack.

Has there been any Ransomware Attacks that don't involve Windows machines?

"Risks Associated with Cyber Attacks

Even though TSMC has established a comprehensive internet and computing security network, it cannot guarantee that the Company’s computing systems which control or maintain vital corporate functions ,such as its manufacturing operations and enterprise accounting, would be completely immune to crippling cyber attacks by any third party to gain unauthorized access to its internal network systems, to sabotage its operations and goodwill or otherwise. In the event of a serious cyber attack, TSMC’s systems may lose important corporate data and its production lines may be shutdown indefinitely pending the resolution of such attack. While TSMC also seeks to annually review and assess its cybersecurity policies and procedures to ensure their adequacy and effectiveness, it cannot guarantee that the Company will not be susceptible to new and emerging risks and attacks in the evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats. These cyber attacks may also attempt to steal TSMC’s trade secrets and other intellectual properties and other sensitive information, such as proprietary information of the Company’s customers and other stakeholders and personal information of the Company’s employees. Malicious hackers may also try to introduce computer viruses, corrupted software or ransomware into the Company’s network systems to disrupt its operations, blackmail it for regaining control of its computing systems or spy for sensitive information. These attacks may result in TSMC having to pay damages for its delayed or disrupted orders or incur significant expenses in implementing remedial and improvement measures to enhance the Company’s cybersecurity network, and may also expose the Company to significant legal liabilities arising from or related to legal proceedings or regulatory investigations associated with, among other things, leakage of customer or third party information which TSMC has an obligation to keep confidential. During 2017 and as of the date of this Annual Report, the Company had not been aware of any material cyber attacks or incidents that had or would expected to have a material adverse effect on its business and operations, nor had it been involved in any legal proceedings or regulatory investigations related thereof.

In addition, the Company employs certain third party service providers for TSMC and its affiliates worldwide with whom the Company needs to share highly sensitive and confidential information to enable them to provide the relevant services. Despite that TSMC requires the third party service providers to comply with the confidentiality and/or Internet security requirements in its service agreements with them, there is no assurance that each of them will strictly fulfill such obligations, or at all. The on-site network systems of and the off-site cloud computing networks such as servers maintained by such service provider and/or its contractors are also subject to risks associated with cyber attacks. If TSMC or its service providers are not able to timely resolve the respective technical difficulties caused by such cyber attacks, or ensure the integrity and availability of its data (and data belonging to its customers and other third parties) or control of its or its service providers’ computing systems, the Company’s commitments to its customers and other stakeholders may be materially impaired and its results of operations, financial condition, prospects and reputation may also be materially and adversely affected as a result." - https://investor.tsmc.com/static/annualReports/2017/english/...

rpaddock··on NXP has messed up their password form validation
Posted a nice rant about NXP and the system here crashed.

It was the Kinetis MKL27.

Bottom line is avoid NXP due to broken parts, poor documentation, no errata's, poor support and poor delivery (still getting quotes into 2025).

That is a very good sign that you should avoid NXP.

I wish that I had. Designing in their parts are the worse mistake of my career.

rpaddock··on Ask HN: How to help someone suffering from worry and depression get better?
A simple intervention, if they are open to suggestions and in this state perhaps not, to try is taking the amino acid supplement S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe). It is found in many Health Food Stores. This stuff is not a Happy Pill as many drugs are.

For myself I found that the Source Natural brand worked and the Walmart brand did nothing.

Speaking from my personal experience with my late wife, I know that it is hard to watch loved ones suffer. In the end the best option is usually to just be there and listen. Males tend to be Mr. Fix It and in general Females don't like that. Takes a while to learn. The book Men are From Mars and Women are from Venus goes into detail.

rpaddock··on The KRC-2 regenerative receiver kit: a review
There were two articles in QST on using an HP Opto Coupler (that part is now obsolete, probably are modern alternatives) to isolate the antenna form the oscillator so it could not become a transmitter. See:

Daniel Wissell, N1BYT, “The OCR Receiver,” QST, Jun 1998

and "The OCR II Receiver" QST, Sep 2000.

Since the search engines have gone AI finding things like the June 1998 issue of QST has become impossible, for me at least. Maybe you have better search fu?
