roygbiv2··on Unofficial Microsoft Teams client for Linux
It's so fucking bizarre that there are multiple versions of the same thing, that are called the same thing but aren't the same thing!
roygbiv2··on UPS plane crashes near Louisville airport
Looks like a compressor stall on number two engine two seconds into the video.
roygbiv2··on Show HN: A fast, dependency-free traceroute implementation in pure C
Because it's AI generated.
roygbiv2··on Phone numbers for use in TV shows, films and creative works
There was once an application, long gone and probably short lived, that let you ring payphones for free over the internet. Me and my mates had a great time phoning up times square, a pub in Australia and other places chatting to randoms.
roygbiv2··on A worker fell into a nuclear reactor pool
Oh I thought I couldn't hate them anymore and I learn this. My leg currently has large hives on it from multiple bites, the antihistamines I have are doing bugger all.
roygbiv2··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
I'm currently testing for alternatives of minio on my homelab. Ceph was nice, lots of bells and whistles, built in support for virtual IPs is excellent, but on my aging hardware it was using 10-15% CPU in my VM while idle. Currently benchmarking garagefs, scales very well with core count and multi node set up is a breeze.
roygbiv2··on A story about bypassing air Canada's in-flight network restrictions
Does it work well? I've never actually got it to work consistently. Either it works for a very brief period or just not at all.
roygbiv2··on A story about bypassing air Canada's in-flight network restrictions
Iodine has done this for many years. https://github.com/yarrick/iodine
roygbiv2··on Images over DNS
The only real place I got iodine to work was 40k feet above the ocean. Even then it was only good enough to telnet into an SMTP server to send an email. Most of the time it's failed for me.
roygbiv2··on Experimental browser MMO with bots, boss fights and power-ups
Did you read the text about 3cm below the play button?
roygbiv2··on Wanted to spy on my dog, ended up spying on TP-Link
What cheap camera doesn't require a phone app and serves RTSP out of the box?
roygbiv2··on How Britain built some of the world’s safest roads
I hit a pheasant on such a road once, not driving at silly speed but it was pitch black. My fog light was never seen again, nor the pheasant.
roygbiv2··on How to make metals from Martian dirt
I can't say it very well so I'll leave it to a great:

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space. - Douglas Adams

roygbiv2··on How to make metals from Martian dirt
I find it pretty amazing that it only gets 43% of the solar energy as Earth, with it being our neighbour.
roygbiv2··on Age verification doesn’t work
Where is your VPN hosted? A lot of sites will block vps hosts.
roygbiv2··on Miles from the ocean, there's diving beneath the streets of Budapest
And just to labour the point some more, the experts that are sent to recover the bodies of the experts that have passed have also ended up dead.
roygbiv2··on GPT-5
I can't get voice accurate. For some people it might be but nothing understands my accent. It's very frustrating.
roygbiv2··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns any book into a text adventure game
You're a big dummy, you've just started learning c++ you come to a fork in the road one way leads to learning pointers the other to a hot bed of coals you have to lie in. Which way do you go?
roygbiv2··on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: WebAssembly SDK
> They did talk about using some form of stencil/exclusion around cockpit displays but I think that didn't go anywhere as yet.

They've been talking about that since the launch of msfs2020 and there's not been any movement on it as far as I know.

roygbiv2··on Working on a Programming Language in the Age of LLMs
> But I came to a point where my app was too buggy and diverged, and being unable to debug it, I refactored it to Vue, since I personally know it better.

One of the many pitfalls with using an llm to write code. It's very easy to find yourself with a codebase you know nothing about that you can't progress any further because it keeps breaking.

roygbiv2··on Rescuing two PDP-11s from a former British Telecom underground shelter (2023)
Yeah I wonder where they are now.
roygbiv2··on Mr Browser – Macintosh Repository file downloader that runs directly on 68k Macs
Currently returning server error.
roygbiv2··on Mr Browser – Macintosh Repository file downloader that runs directly on 68k Macs
This landed at exactly the right time for me. I've just pulled out my 7100/66av power pc from the cupboard to play with. It lacks any modern browser (and probably the power to deal with https) so I resorted to hosting simple http server on my modern computer and downloading things I wanted to there and then going to the mac to download it again.
roygbiv2··on Captain Cook's missing ship found after sinking 250 years ago
Toasted sandwich? They're pretty much the god of sandwiches.
roygbiv2··on Tracking Copilot vs. Codex vs. Cursor vs. Devin PR Performance
Tell them how much money they will save.
roygbiv2··on Why Android can't use CDC Ethernet (2023)
This is incredibly annoying. If my internet goes down I'm unable to diagnose it from my phone because it won't stay connected to the WiFi that doesn't have internet. DNS is also messed up on Android, it refuses to use the Dhcp supplied dns without having to set multiple options and even then some internal dns refuses to resolve.
roygbiv2··on MinIO Community version 2.0 is going back to be an object browser only
Oh good I'll look forward to migrating away from this in the near future then.
roygbiv2··on How to cheat at settlers by loading the dice (2017)
Played Pandemic Legacy over the course of probably a couple of years with some friends, gee it took some time but we got there in the end.
roygbiv2··on New research reveals the strongest solar event ever detected, in 12350 BC
Well there you go then, a little dull but probably for the best.
roygbiv2··on New research reveals the strongest solar event ever detected, in 12350 BC
How would this effect computers and everyday electrical devices? If we detected something like this heading towards us would we have to turn everything off for the day/week? That's just not possible though is it, can't just turn off nuclear power plants for the day.
