roxstar··on Rush: the ruby shell
You use something like bash or zsh when it is convenient rather than to actually do anything with. If you are finding it slow use python, perl ,or something else to do your task; the real power of the shell comes from the easy access to all the unix tools that work well for their singular tasks. That power would be the main criticism I would find with the ruby shell, it seems so foreign and without access to the tools available (unless of course it is using them on the backend) but piping and other one off things would be interesting to see as examples because right now this shell looks like ruby with some libraries added in (sorry not a ruby programmer so I don't know the proper term)
roxstar··on Latency Compensating Methods in Client/Server Games
Qwest has interleave on for DSL which means my first hop is easily over 40 ms so a minimum ping of 60-80 is rather likely for me.

I don't know if the same holds true for their fiber but I'm sure interleave is common among DSL providers. Cable also suffers from neighborhood overselling where in peak hours people get ping times in like 200-600 ms when they are likely to play.

I don't know if this problem will be fixed soon but I think prediction is still necessary (or more so required) for a large population.

This may just be limited to American broadband services though, and I'm sure larger cities may have less of a problem.

roxstar··on A Note About Git Commit Messages
I don't know it seems so weird to see it like that, fix login bug seems more like a todo than an action.

I could understand if it were in this format: Fixes login bug. Updates copyright year. Ignores log directory. Those seem so much more like actions than the other.

roxstar··on Beans make you gassy, and other advice from last night's first YC dinner
Grandma's special trick: add a whole potato (peeled, raw) late in the cooking and take it out before it melts into your beans.

It really works quite well, something with absorbing and what not and it might work when you soak the beans first but doing it after it has been cooking also makes the beans thicker :)

This is all done in a crock pot rather than pressure cooker though.

roxstar··on Ask HN: Where do you Django?
Linode, their admin is great and been a customer for a long time, just a set up your self kind of deal but stackscripts are great for getting a server running quickly.
roxstar··on Debunking the Google Interview Myth
Actually you get the hammer one in automotive maintenance examples, and also if you are talking to an older generation where hitting stuff worked much better.
roxstar··on Firefox overtakes IE in Europe
Yeah but you have to be able to run non-approved exe's to do that and so many places still don't allow that.
