rovr138··on My Home Fibre Network Disintegrated

At this point, multiple. Just in case.

rovr138··on Oh My Zsh adds bloat
No, it doesn't.

The way I actually have things setup, in case it helps. I don't change my default shell. I actually default to pretty much working within tmux. So, I kept my default shell to what the OS brings, then in my tmux config, I have,

    # set shell
    set -g default-shell /opt/homebrew/bin/fish
This means, that when I start my terminal, it drops me to zsh (macOS default). Then when I run tmux, it opens fish. The nice thing is that I inherit the environment of zsh.

I have my .zshrc and my .bashrc sourcing a .shellrc file which contains most of my env stuff. This keeps random utilities that write to .bashrc and zshrc working within fish too.

rovr138··on Oh My Zsh adds bloat
I write all my scripts in bash. I'm not learning a new language.

That's not a problem since it's available and when #/bin/bash or env bash is there, it just works.

My bash scripts are stored in a folder on my PATH, so it all just works.

rovr138··on Oh My Zsh adds bloat
./script.sh

and script.sh just starts with #/bin/bash

I'm simple

rovr138··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
> having a feature of a paid product removed is dissatisfying

It wasn't a feature. It was a loophole. They closed it.

There are multiple products. Besides models, there's a desktop app, there's claude code. They have subscriptions.

rovr138··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
it doesn't need sudo privileges...
rovr138··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
You justify a wrong thing by attacking something else? Is that the only argument?
rovr138··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
They could open source and not take contributions fwiw.

They could close the issues and only allow discussions.

There was a project mentioned here recently that did just that.

Except that the cost is better with their harness and looks like people don’t want to fork 5x.

Adoption is how one wins. Look at all the crappy solutions out there that are still around.

rovr138··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
You win by adoption.

Here adoption is a combination on the tool and the model.

If people can’t pay the model to use the tool, they might not use the tool even if it’s better.

That’s what anthropic is doing.

It might be faster, but it’s more expensive.

rovr138··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
Yes.

They talk about it being an optimization. They also talk about the bottleneck being level generation, which happens at the same time as loading from disk.

> If society feels that's "unethical", maybe pony up the cash because you all still want to rely on their work product they are giving out for free.

I like OSS and everything.

Having said that, ethically, should society be paying for these? Maybe that is what should happen. In some places, we have programs to help artists. Should we have the same for software?

There was a thread here earlier this month,

> Helldivers 2 devs slash install size from 154GB to 23GB

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46134178

Section of the top comment says,

> It seems bizarre to me that they'd have accepted such a high cost (150GB+ installation size!) without entirely verifying that it was necessary!

and the reply to it has,

> They’re not the ones bearing the cost. Customers are.

rovr138··on Using Python for Scripting
> Finally, it should be noted that this doesn’t work in ZSH, and if you’re using ZSH, you probably are a bit more of a terminal enthusiast than the average person. And if the enthusiasts can’t use this in their favourite shell, it’s less likely that they will use it in the scripts they make.

Important thing to note here is, ZSH is the default on macOS.

rovr138··on Show HN: WalletWallet – create Apple passes from anything
Very interesting, and you can define multiple already,

Fine. Where are the doctors? Why is the debate on the students?

Example, do you think someone that's hard of hearing can't meet the standard for a 'highly academically successful student"? Or someone that's color blind? Or someone that's blind? Or someone in a wheelchair?

I would love to have experts look at the data of this self reported community survey vs the CDC's data.

To the edit, I can agree.

We are talking ultimately what ADA classifies as a dissability. Which is different from what might be needed for driving (as an example).

ADA has requirements. Doctors have their definitions. They're being met.

If a doctor abuses it, then we should be going for the doctors. As was said in another comment, while they are human and susceptible, they also are the ones with the license.

rovr138··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Okay, the oposite would be, you put a stringent process on how to measure things. You have rigorous testing. These all take time and money, including lost income in time you need to take away, and money paid for the testing.

And you end up with people that could have had help to be successful, and not they're not being able to operate within the constraints.

So, what do you do then?

> then what the heck is going on that sooooo many people are disabled

Good question. We should study this and figure what the fuck we are messing up as a society... if only we had funding and also we had someone that could act with the findings and take action.

Looks like Stanford might be a good place to start. How's their funding situation?

rovr138··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Who are you to say what should be included or not, that something can be gauged as mild or not, and that there should be a treshold?
rovr138··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
25% of Americans have a disability, https://www.cdc.gov/disability-and-health/media/pdfs/disabil...

We don't know what's the percentage broken down by age.

If 38% is almost 50%, 25% is almost 38%.

All their services depend on their models. Their main priority should be that. If they're too thin, it gets affected.

What can openai do that, even if their models lag behind, will let them keep their competitive advantage?
