rougka··on In Defense of Missile Defense
Really liked the aesthetics of Aegis Ashore, they simply pulled a part of the ship and placed it on land. It’s something I imagine a software engineer would do
rougka··on Princeton lab simulates nuclear war (2019)
The simulation reminds of https://store.steampowered.com/app/1520/DEFCON/ just with much weaker graphics
rougka··on Has the CIA Done More Harm Than Good?
Could be, although Vietnam was fundamentally different than North Korea. Even if you compare Korea to Vietnam, it is highly unlikely the economic situation had been similar to South Korea.

Anyway this is all alternate history, just as the discussions in GP. How could we say something is a failure when we have no real way of understanding its effects

rougka··on Has the CIA Done More Harm Than Good?
This only looks at failures as it is very hard to attribute success in such cases. For example you list North Korea as a failure, but American involvement there is the only reason why South Korea exists and we don’t have one giant North Korea.

The fact of the matter is that the Cold War was won, and the CIA was a major part of it. You could analyze every coup that was started in Latin America as a mistake, but you can’t really say what was the alternative

rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
What you're describing is true for the absolute majority of the US population. We're living in a capitalist system which restricts access to resources to different people.

Consider this, how much of the world population has access to running water? a computer? medicine? English is their first language or has a US visa? So how many of these can realistically study at one of the world’s top universities?

Consider this and you will understand that even this one kid that studied in the high school with gang violence is so called privileged, and so is any citizen of the US.

Think about it and you’ll see this is just a way to shift guilt to some magical top 1%, while anyone born in a western country has a significant advantage, and the way Capitalism is structured, anyone has an "unfair" advantage on some other person

rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
Yes that is correct but that is of course correct for any higher education school be it Ivy League or not. Even public school education is restricted to some by economic situation and the quality is highly variable across locations.

By that logic community college is also a privilege granted upon those with enough money for tuition and enough time to attend

This is of course taking one facet of Capitalism, calling it by a scare word (privilege) and forgetting about at all the other identical parts

rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
Legacy candidates might be some kind of privilege, however that does not exist in most schools and is only something that got you there. There is no privilege in graduating from higher education where people don’t cheat, as this is not as if you’ll take a random sample of the population, rich or poor, enroll them into a CS degree and get a high percentage of graduates.

You cannot call something that takes skill and hard work a privilege. Privilege is something you’re born with, such as gentry. It also completely excludes these that are not born with that privilege, which is not the case here

rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
Edit: Read minority instead of minor

My point being is that barring any proof of cheating, merely graduating from an elite university does indicate some level of competence. It requires some very hard work which in STEM not just anyone could do, and therefore it is unfair to say this is some god given privilege

Also, you cannot say how many of these graduates had access to the advantages you’ve listed above, and how much of the general population as a whole does

rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
I didn’t really follow these, does that mean that graduating a CS degree in Harvard does not indicate some kind of ability and perseverance? Is it completely rigged so I can safely assume that Harvard CS in a CV is a bad signal?
rougka··on New study suggests people with dark personalities weaponize victimhood (2021)
Just something I am curious about, privilege tends to mean an unfair advantage given to a group if I get it right. So how is an Ivy League education a privilege? Doesn’t it require a lot of hard work to get into or finish such school? Isn’t it something rightfully gained?
rougka··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
I saw that no one mentioned American Factory

So, American Factory, the best I’ve seen about globalization and its less glamorous results

rougka··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
Palestinian Islamism is mostly rooted in the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement originating in the 1920's Cairo
rougka··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
He probably meant the PLO that moved from Jordan to Lebanon after failing to make Jordan the failed state it has made Lebanon
rougka··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
Since when are the PLO considered an Islamist movement?
rougka··on Why the Windows Registry sucks technically (2010)
the registry needs to be read by device drivers including the drivers for tcp and nics, including during very early boot. this would make HTTP a challenge. Also implementing a json parser in the kernel sounds like a bad idea
rougka··on We don't do that here (2017)
In a corporate environment you do have an investigation department that enforces such language. However, my point is that in a totalitarian environment people treated you as a pariah for non conforming, as they would not want to face a similar fate. This is a similarity to the taboo of advocating against such an ideology.

about the examples, if you would take extreme slurs against minorities, these are not used in a professional environment already so they are never these that are discussed

The words that are discussed are such that are established for a different connotation. that connotation is completely metaphorical and does not carry any real insult, yet some insist on literalizing those, or finding hidden meanings

rougka··on We don't do that here (2017)
Stalinism might had a top down approach to ideology, but what would get you in a gulag is the people around you reporting you to the kgb. This made oppression including linguistic also bottom-up

Newspeak is actually a very similar approach to what’s going on currently because it removes words that allows communicating ideologically problematic concepts. What’s going on with the entire blacklist/whitelist issues is based on the assumption that removing a word that describes a perceived injustice will remove that injustice from the world. It is an approach that is completely blind to the real meaning a word has taken, and tries to folk etymologically hack a different interpretation. This is why the real insulting words are never these that debated.

Both Newspeak and "rightspeak" think that language creates reality rather than the other way around

rougka··on Jury finds former CIA programmer guilty of leaking CIA hacking materials
I don’t know about how strong the case is, but the stories about his character makes sense in the context of someone who would leak that.

Notice who you call as ‘they’ didn’t portray him as a self-proclaimed idealist, but someone with an unstable personality and who weaponizes workplace bureaucracy for petty fights

We do know for a fact that he filed for a restraining order against his coworker, that seems extremely weird to me, and I don’t work for the CIA.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

rougka··on Microsoft Windows Network File System v4 Remote Code Execution
Maybe this example was not the best as it is only in Windows for 10 years, NFS however as a component exists since at least NT 4.

Even if this exploit only touches completely new code, my point still stands that windows has multiple layers of archeology which were designed when security was an afterthought.

Some of these are preinstalled with Windows, use networking and run as SYSTEM (WMI, spool) others are used by enough components in windows they will never be removed yet it doesn’t seem they are undergoing any development (COM/OLE)

rougka··on Microsoft Windows Network File System v4 Remote Code Execution
Seems like all the good zero days are in highly vintage components such as SMB, NFS, True Type Fonts and Windows Fax

If I were a security researcher I would look at anything that came from win 3.11, probably full of holes

rougka··on Did the early medieval era ever take place?
My fringe hypothesis is even wilder:

Jesus told his believers to eat his flesh and blood to get eternal life (John 6:53–57)

Someone took it literally and opened the grave, and ate the body

This is how the body disappeared suddenly and the grave was open. Others seeing this thought this was a miracle. Meaning Jesus came back to life, opened the grave and left

Whoever was involved had a good reason to keep that secret

rougka··on Understanding Have I Been Pwned's Use of SHA-1 and K-Anonymity
I don’t think there’s an infinite number of email addresses. The ‘username’ part is limited to 64 chars, while it almost never exceeds 20 (or even less). The number of domains is also a fixed number at any given time, while I suspect that 10 domains contain over 80% of e-mail addresses

I didn’t see the email API and it is not obvious to me if this breaks any privacy protection (or what is the threat), but generating a lot of SHA-1 hashes for popular gmail addresses is probably very possible

rougka··on Asking for a date of birth (2013)
UK gov development is very impressive when I compare it to the government websites here which have a distinct 90’s scent. Both in open source projects and these design blogs. Seems like a highly professional software organization
rougka··on I may be fired over AI ethics work

rougka··on Feeling like a victim is a perfectly disastrous way to go through life
It’s actually extremely useful to go through life feeling like a victim. There is such an intense social pressure to succeed in something, you can just attribute any failure to the dice being loaded and reduce that pressure
rougka··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
Reminds us all that instead of fixing real social issues we can all go into denial by changing the words that denote them
rougka··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
I still think traffic lights would work as that’s almost a universal global standard (isn’t Japan the only exception?) and it works well in English

But I think we can agree that the goal when choosing these names isn’t really being concise and easy to use

rougka··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
I want to offer greenlist and redlist

And to those who say this is not inclusive to the colorblind, I say traffic lights

rougka··on Show HN: Employees.fyi – Easily compare U.S. workforce demographic data
What is weird to me that this is a racist approach to society, racist as in believes that race is the way society is structured as opposed to for example a marxist class system and racist in its belief that fixing this should be done on a race by race basis

I guess for me these statistics would be easier to digest if they were centered around poverity: e.g. How many cars did your family own, size of childhood home or something of that sort
