roter··on How white can white paint get?
What you seek to do is increase the bulk albedo of the ground/surface/neighbourhood/city resulting in the net reflected solar radiation approaching the incoming leading to minimal absorbed shortwave and thus less compensating emitted longwave (sigma * T_surf*4). If you increase albedo, you're definitely going to lower the air temperature during the day. Rays are going to bounce around and eventually leave without warming anything. Other than your body if you haven't painted yourself white.

However, with all these reflective surfaces you do get concerned with direct solar i.e. skiing in shorts & glare e.g. the "walkie-talkie" building [0].

roter··on OsmAnd 4.3 for Android devices
I've liked Organic Maps for anchoring while sailing. Drop anchor, set a marker in OM, and have it as a backup source if I can't see the shore anymore during a storm (I've got other instruments).

Just been checking out OSMAnd+ from FDroid for one reason: depth contours for the Great Lakes. Seems reasonable from a quick check of some of my anchorages. Again, I have a back-up source for these as well: https://activecaptain.garmin.com/en-US/Map as well as paper & chartplotter. I'd love to see this depth layer in Organic Maps.

roter··on The UKHO intends to withdraw from paper chart production by 2026
Having come back to sailing/cruising after many years I was surprised at the level of navigational knowledge of the typical boater. In the old days, I had my charts, my hand-held compass, binoculars, dividers, etc. Now people go out with their smartphone and end up hitting the wrong side of a marker. Course, there seems to be less drinking and boating these days so that's a plus.

For those interested there are a lot of free options for charts. One is OpenCPN [0] which provides an interface to charting and all your electronics (e.g. AIS, GPS, radar). There are free raster & vector charts available worldwide (e.g. NOAA) which can be downloaded onto your PC or Raspberry PI.

Kudos. Usually these type of "in N lines of Python"-type things proceed to call a 3rd-party library like "sklearn" or "matplotlib" to do all the heavy lifting. Fun, educational article.

Related: Scihub's hearing before the Indian courts apparently has been moved back to Feb 2023 if I read the first comment correctly at the Reddit thread that is keeping track of the case [0]. The High Court website is non-reachable for me so I cannot confirm.

roter··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
More and more boaters are using tablets & phones as the apps give you access to charts and your instruments (e.g. wind, AIS).

Antennas solutions are increasing to get cellular reception farther offshore that feed into a wifi router.

At anchor, I personally use Organic Maps and drop a pin after I'm properly at anchor. There are specialized "anchor watch" apps but this works for my purposes.

Sailing used to be so simple...

roter··on The 12-bit rainbow palette
I really like this palette. If I had one caution, it would be for using it for symmetric or diverging colour scales. i.e. for anomalies with 0 at the centre. Typically zero would be at the lightest greyscale which for this palette is the yellow, offset from centre. That said, in the example visualizations on their site, colour is used to indicate unique values, and are strikingly clear. So, all good!

For me it is just Firefox that I don't want in snap form. The Mozilla team still puts out a .deb version via PPA [0]. You should probably also pin to this source so that the snaps don't get installed [1].

roter··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Confirmed. Turned on the beta program and exported ~1000 text messages over to Google Messages. Settings->Chats->SMS and MMS->Export. Involves changing the default app for SMS between Signal and Google Messages.
roter··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Indeed. Double-check icon indicates Signal messages. Unlocked icon indicates non-Signal. My 85-year-old mother understands this.
roter··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
This. Now you have to remember who is in Signal and who isn't. All because apparently the double-check mark for messages between Signal users and the unlocked icon for SMS messages is too hard to comprehend. SMH.

Shouldn't be if your building was designed properly, with a proper Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) e.g. [0]. The long and short of it, fresh air is slightly heated by stale outgoing moist air.

How much is the draw of all those ammeters? i.e. the "burden". I'm having trouble finding what that would be for a typical household plug ammeter without avoiding all the "power meters are great" spam sites. I assume it is very small.

roter··on How IKEA tricks you into buying more stuff
The HEJNE shelves have gone done drastically in quality. Picked up a new version ~3 years ago. Flimsy, wood split while assembling due to flaws. Just re-assembled my mother-in-law's older version. Tighter grain, thicker wood, just more stable.

The IVAR shelves have also started cheaping out. The shelving support rails/clips/whatever were metal and are now plastic. Perhaps they're strong enough but our old version has been going strong since the mid-90s under heavy use. Glue-lam is a strong material.

roter··on Dangerous humid heat extremes occurring decades before expected (2020)
These are observational station locations, so typically located at airports, but will cluster in highly-developed countries and where people live or build things.

Wet-bulb temperature is to first approximation the average of the dry-bulb (ambient temperature of air) and dew-point temperature (direct measure of amount of water vapour in air). So we're looking for places that can be both hot & wet in summer (e.g. eastern US) or really hot and still somewhat moist (e.g. near Arabian Sea) [0].
