rooster117··on Show HN: My iOS app to practice sight reading (10 years in the App Store)
I appreciate it!

I'd love to add new instruments. I actually have a version which is violin only but it is pretty stale at this point.

rooster117··on MusicXML
I've relied on this format to store songs in my iOS app for years. Representing notation is an interesting problem to solve.
rooster117··on Learning the Cello as an Adult (1997)
This is an excellent article and I can relate. I'm in my early 30's and I took up piano a year and a half ago. Learning music has been a great outlet and gives me something to study that has nothing to do with programming. I've taken lessons the entire time and I've found the best help my instructor has given me was telling me what I was doing wrong that I'd never be able to see. It's fun to learn something new and I feel music is a mystery that was similar to when I started down the engineering path. Even though its an escape I still ended up making an iOS app to practice sight reading since I didn't like what was out there. It's a shameless plug but its available and is free with no ads or iaps: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-note-sight-reading-tra...

SEEKING WORK (iOS) - Remote (based in Los Angeles are)

I am a highly experienced iOS developer who has been writing apps since 2009 as a full time developer as well as on the side. I have published many personal apps and an app I developed with a partner has reached #1 in its category multiple times in the US, been featured many places in the app store, #1 in multiple other countries and maintains a 5 star average in reviews.

I'd be interested in short term or part time contract work. I'm familiar with all aspects of the development lifecycle including submissions.

rooster117··on How taxes really work
I think its an ok analogy because its talking about federal government services and when talking about services like national security and currency protection they are all getting the same meal.
rooster117··on Apple Turns on iPhone Tracking in iOS6
Advertisers do not need to rely on the UDID(which is still widely used) to track you since all that matters is they have a unique key they can associate with the hardware. The MAC address does the same thing and there are a handful of other options that are close enough for what they care about.
rooster117··on New Apple Developer Guideline Bans Apps That Promote Other Apps
I have personally experimented with TapJoy and even though it worked as a way of bumping my ranking for a small period of time I choose to never use it again and now that I understand those networks I would be pretty happy if they didn't exist anymore. I wouldn't want to get rid of all cross promotion though since if I really liked an app I may want to know more about other apps the developer made.
rooster117··on What is your favorite IDE for development?
It has some flaws but I've really started enjoying xcode. I am forced to use it for iOS but its getting better.
rooster117··on Ask HN: What is the best iOS analytics platform?
The very basic use of Flurry is the most important and unless you have some very important event you need to track then I wouldn't worry about it to start. One case I needed to use custom events was when I had a big operation that could be canceled out of within the app. I used custom events to track how many people started compared to finished which was helpful.
rooster117··on Ask HN: What is the best iOS analytics platform?
I have added a bunch of custom events to my flurry analytics but in the end the amount of active users, session length and device type has helped us make very important decisions moving forward. Also it makes it so you don't have to wait a day to see your new user count.
rooster117··on 51 percent of people believe stormy weather can interfere with cloud computing
Well wouldn't the 51 percent be right? http://gigaom.com/cloud/some-of-amazon-web-services-are-down...
