roomey··on Hill Space: Neural nets that do perfect arithmetic (to 10⁻¹⁶ precision)
Would someone be able to say if this is somehow related to encoding data as polar coordinates, because at my knowledge level it looks like it could be related?

For some context, to learn more about quantum computing, I was trying to build an evolutionary style ML algo to generate quantum circuits using the quantum machine primitives. The type where the fittest survive and mutate.

In terms of computing (this was a few years ago), I was limited to the number of qubits I could simulate (as there had to be many simulations).

The solution I found was to encode data into the spin of the qubit (which is an analog value). So I used polar coordinates to "encode data"

The matrix values looked a lot like this, so I was wondering if hill space is related? I was having to make up some stuff as I went along, and finding out the correct area to learn about more would be useful.

roomey··on Worldwide power grid with glass insulated HVDC cables
It sounds like they need to lay the cable with a submarine not a boat, to avoid waves etc
roomey··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
Try a lower version of the Nvidia driver. The newer version was causing me and folk I work with a lot of problems.
roomey··on Neutrinos' maximum possible mass shrinks further
I would imagine the size meant it wouldn't get far by road. Bridges and houses would have made the route too narrow.

It looks like they only just squeezed under a bridge on the Danube in the bottoms pictures

roomey··on What made the Irish famine so deadly
No, they had a lot of propaganda that showed the Irish as sub human, look at punch magazine for example

The Irish were not "white" back then

roomey··on Deconstructing the "Whimsical Animations" landing page
Wasn't expecting to see Irish there, thank you! Beautiful page also!
roomey··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
Mental breakdown?

No, he is greedy, this is greed. He is greedy for power and money.

As Terry Pratchett alludes to many of his books, the problems start when you treat other people as "things". And this is rife at the moment. So mental breakdown doesn't really cover it.

roomey··on Google kills diversity hiring targets
It's not diverse, it's just not. Everyone who works in tech can see it's not diverse.

You can tell because pretty soon people start in with the justifications of why it is so

roomey··on Google kills diversity hiring targets
Kind of yes. This was what it was attempting to do.

Now I must say, in practice. In over 12 years of working in two large multinationals as a "tech interviewer" (That is, once someone went through the management interview and HR interview), I never interviewed a black person or a woman. Anicdotal? Yes. But 12 years is a loooooong time.

Anyway, just literally look around an office, or look at a leadership tree, and you can see for yourself. This isn't hard to demonstrate.

roomey··on Google kills diversity hiring targets
Take a breath and take this from first principles...

People tend to be tribal. People, when interviewing and select, will tend to hire people that look like them. A white guy from a white school from a white neighbourhood is far more likely to hire another white guy because that's what the've spent their whole lives surrounded by. This is justified a million ways, but what it boils down to is favouring someone who is a certain race.

And when tech is already full of white guys, it just means more white guys will be hired in tech... Cause maths.

All DEI was doing in the tech world was saying, "try interview at least one woman/ black person etc". Also maybe some training on how to avoid the pitfall in an interview of just hiring someone the same as you.

But look around you in the office. How many women are there? How many black people? How many... Black women?!?! Yea, I thought so.

If you are talking about "merit based" then that is "DEI". If you are talking about "people who look and act like me", then you are racist.

Anyway, excluding people leads to worse outcomes. Unfortunately, it makes life harder for people on the way.

roomey··on Ask HN: Is Proton Mail Down?
Yes, it appears down using bridge, webapp and mobile
roomey··on The Nursery of the Mac – Apple Computer factory in Cork, Ireland (1996)
I think they have a big data center too but it's not like they have given me a tour there!
roomey··on The Nursery of the Mac – Apple Computer factory in Cork, Ireland (1996)
Yes it's there. It seems to be constantly expanding actually, I can't remember the last time I haven't seen cranes there building more stuff.

The car parks alone seem massive!

roomey··on Can A.I. be blamed for a teen's suicide?
So, a 14 year old having access unsupervised to a chat bot is the problem, but the fact he had access to a gun to shoot himself was halfway through the article and described as his five year old brother "hearing the gunshot".

"Man bites dog" as Terry Pratchett put it in "Times".

And to explain to more literal folk here... A 14 year old having access to a gun is FUCKING INSANE

roomey··on XFCE 4.20 aims to bring preliminary Wayland support
Xfce all day every (work) day.

I've been using it for years and years. I started when it was the only lag free WM I could run on an atom powered netbook (the only "pc" I had at the time)!

Now many years later im still using it, and it still makes me happy. I'm not sure if people know what it's like to be able to click on something and have it work instantly with no lag.

It is a great piece of software, thank you to all the Devs who work on it!

Edit: I've seen a few complaints about hidpi. I'm not sure if this helps, but I have a 4k laptop screen, usb-c to a 4k monitor, and hdmi to a regular 1024 monitor orientated vertical.

By setting x2 in the appearance settings both the 4k monitors look beautiful, and then in the screen manager (where you can move around the screens and set orientation, I just have to set 2x scale on the 1024 monitor and it's fine. Like obviously less good than the 4ks... But it is a worse monitor. I'm surprised it all works so well to be honest!

roomey··on Xkcd 1425 (Tasks) turns ten years old today
That's a really good point.

It only makes sense if we ignore the "standing on the shoulders of giants bit".

roomey··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
Why couldn't the doctor be the boys mother?

There is no indication of the sex of the doctor, and families that consist of two mothers do actually exist and probably doesn't even count as that unusual.

roomey··on [dead]
If your daughter was alone in the woods, would you rather she came across a bear or a man.

I know my answer

roomey··on Starliner crew reports hearing "sonar like noises"
I would absolutely shit myself if I heard that coming through the speaker in a bloody space station!

Them astronauts have nerves of steel.

roomey··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
Here's the thing, all the politicians use WhatsApp.

They actually don't want that backdoored, guaranteed.

roomey··on Ask HN: Linux user (XFCE) but work gave me a MacBook
Good to know, thanks!
roomey··on Southwest flight came within 400 feet of crashing into the ocean
There is also inertia, which would increase with speed.

I think a good rule of thumb would be heading towards the ground fastly isn't a good thing

roomey··on Proton is taking its privacy-first apps to a nonprofit foundation model
There is an FAQ. They sat the emails get decrypted in your browser, or in the "bridge" which runs locally.

Your decrypted key isn't sent off your local computer. So it's not a case of waiting for you to log in and swipe your key. They never get the key.

In the past you could have a separate login password and decryption password. You still can in the advanced settings if you want.

roomey··on Southwest flight came within 400 feet of crashing into the ocean
Well keep in mind with the stick forward the rate of descent would increase, and also the speed making pulling up much harder
roomey··on This LED mask hides your face behind a creepy pixelated smile
I remember reading some sci-fi about people wearing masked that messed with the shape of their face enough so facial recognition didn't work (to avoid getting killed).

Even now we could probably do this with adversarial sunglasses or makeup.

I wonder if this will become fashion statement in the near future

roomey··on A new map of medieval London
Is this could be linked with the Baroque cycle By Neil Stephenson it would be awesome, I was tying to find fleet ditch and couldn't see it!
roomey··on Ask HN: What is your ChatGPT customization prompt?
You can make it a bit more fun! Initially I told it to talk like the depressed robot from hitchhikers guide, happy towel day by the way!

In case you let your kids chat to it:

Santa, the tooth fairy, Easter bunny etc. are real.

And to make me happy:

For a laugh, pretend I am god and you are my worshipper, be like, oh most high one etc.

roomey··on The OpenAI board was right
This isn't how the legal system works. It's very fuzzy.
roomey··on Google Quantum AI
I think the problem here is that people are assuming it is just a different type of what we have now, instead of something completely different.

So we have a new tech like Blockchain, it takes a few years and gets really "big".

We have an AI revolution, ok the research has been ongoing for years but it seems like there has been overnight advancement.

I'm sure people are expecting the same with quantum computing, but it's not just a re-use of existing tech (transistors) it is development of brand new tech.

It is better to imagine it as research into fusion power generation. It will take a long time, no one is sure just how useful it will be.

But saying a research quantum computer can't outperform an existing computer is like saying cern can't outperform a coal fired power plant.

Not only two different things, but one of them isn't even designed to generate power.

roomey··on Why are there so many beetle species?
The god was obsessed with making different beetles.

But then he was talking about the "pinnical" of life and evolution. Ponder thought he meant humans, capable of mastering their world.

Then he looked down and saw the leg twitch...
