ronanyeah··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
I usually assume this of every brand that pushes their native app(s) while intentionally degrading their web offering.

Twitter's (great) PWA is a notable exception.

ronanyeah··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
The original 'they' are long gone.
ronanyeah··on Epic Games has filed legal papers in response to Apple [pdf]
As a PWA developer I can only laugh at this comment.
ronanyeah··on Israel and UAE reach historic peace deal, Israel to suspend annexation
I spent some time in the region in 2017 (Gaza / West Bank / Israel), and it was obvious to me that nothing would change for Palestinians until an Islamic country was able to represent their interests through diplomatic relations with Israel.

I think this is great news and I'm very excited to see where it leads.

ronanyeah··on Single Page Applications using Rust
As a longtime user of both, Rust has a long way to go on the frontend before I would consider switching.
ronanyeah··on Why is CSS the way it is?
Some help can be found with typed CSS:

https://github.com/reasonml-labs/bs-css

Or even a typed alternative to/subset of CSS:

ronanyeah··on Preserving arcade games (2014) [video]
It would be cool if all C/C++ based games were eventually ported to WebAssembly, and could be played through a cloud gaming service such as Stadia.
ronanyeah··on Moving from TypeScript to Rust / WebAssembly
You can get that kind of reliability on the front end with Elm, Purescript etc but investing in such niche languages is obviously a nuanced decision.
ronanyeah··on Moving from TypeScript to Rust / WebAssembly
I replaced Node.js with Rust ages ago.

It was a brutal learning curve but having the compiler cover everything I do is a massive advantage that never stops paying dividends.

ronanyeah··on Chicago Police Department shuts down its arrest API
Open crime data should be mandatory for every police force, let citizens do the auditing.
ronanyeah··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2020)

ronanyeah··on Show HN: Is full stack type safety possible?
I'm the author, so I hope that passes!
ronanyeah··on Ask HN: Does blockchain still show promise, or is it all but dead?
Cyprus have started using blockchain to battle Covid.

ronanyeah··on Software reuse is more like an organ transplant than snapping Lego blocks (2011)
I write full stack web in various functional programming languages, and I am constantly copy-pasting 'lego blocks' between projects. If the compiler is happy, I'm happy.
ronanyeah··on Deno will stop using TypeScript
Anything to justify not learning a new language.
ronanyeah··on Prisma 2.0 – Type-safe and auto-generated database client
Well said. Though Hasura makes it easier.
ronanyeah··on Show HN: Free Movies

ronanyeah··on Why I’m Leaving Elm
I've been using Elm happily for 3 years. Thanks for posting this.
ronanyeah··on Dynamic type systems are not inherently more open
I went from Node.js to Rust and this is what it sounds like to me.
ronanyeah··on Problems with TypeScript
The tooling and reliability of Elm over the last few years is quite a bit better than TS.
ronanyeah··on Null References: The Billion Dollar Mistake
Elm is a great JS replacement on the frontend.
ronanyeah··on Applications Are Now Open for YC Startup School – Starts in January
Low code development.
ronanyeah··on Amtrak Could Turn a Profit for the First Time
I just used Amtrak to travel across the US as I didn't want to bring my electric skateboard on a plane.

It is a very high quality service.

ronanyeah··on Why iOS 13 and Catalina Are So Buggy
TLDR, technical debt.
ronanyeah··on Software projects written in Haskell
Outstanding project. Been using the beta releases successfully for a while.
ronanyeah··on Re-writing the site of Norway's largest transport provider in Elm
Also I don't think anyone believes the infinite amount of JS developers makes it any easier to identify a good React hire.
ronanyeah··on Re-writing the site of Norway's largest transport provider in Elm
Good point, hopefully someday Elm will support remote work.
ronanyeah··on Asset minification with Elm (2018)
Been using Elm exclusively for 2 years. Many projects of different sizes. Very pleased with it.
