rollthehard6··on Detecting the use of "curl | bash" server-side
Erm, why not just configure auditd to detect it instead? Though not sure how widely available that facility is outside of Red Hat.
rollthehard6··on Credit Card Signatures Are About to Become Extinct in the U.S
And even earlier in other EU countries I imagine, as I was in Luxembourg in 2001 and used pin to pay in supermnarkets with my UK card.
rollthehard6··on Simplified and community-driven man pages
This, so much this. Having only transitioned into RHEL from Solaris in the latter 1/4 of my career, I still hark back to Solaris man pages and to this day, on Linux I will do -

man foo

/EXAMPLES

And frequently find what I find, if there are any at all, very lacking compared to Solaris.

I have often thought I and others who complain about this should get involved in working on these man pages and improve this situation.

rollthehard6··on Ask HN: High functioning alcoholism – anyone?
For me, as an adult child of a now deceased alcoholic mother, the headline on this article plays down the findings detailed further down. If you're drinking every night in front of your kids, to my mind that is affecting them, whether you care to acknowledge it or not. So I would say it's great you acknowledge it is a problem and should address it. I think wine is a particularly insidious problem in many places as people see it is going along with food, which is fine in terms of a single glass say, not a bottle an evening. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41665460

One nice feature of VMS that I haven't seen mentioned here yet is the built in versioning of files. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Files-11
rollthehard6··on UK election: Conservatives lose majority
Elections are still won on hope for change it seems. Not that anyone won but certainly more of the same with nothing much positive seems to have not won it for Tories.
rollthehard6··on UK election: Conservatives lose majority
It makes sense but it makes way more sense to do that before triggering Article 50, not after and 11 days before negotiations commence. Just reckless and stupid.
rollthehard6··on DevOps is a culture, not a role
and, if you are going to bring in a person or persons to be that 'Devops specialist' and help your devops transformation, don't bother if you aren't going to empower them to facilitate real changes, or if you are going to put them in their own little silo and leave them to get on with just automating some manual stuff - that way you will have some automation that may or may not do what you want, but you won't achieve real transformation and reap the benefits thereof.
rollthehard6··on Something is wrong when the ‘telephone app’ on your phone becomes 3rd party
Likewise in French, 'portable', similar to mobile.
rollthehard6··on Guardian pulls ads from Google after they were placed next to extremist material
Now UK government have complained about this with their ad too as has Channel 4 - https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/mar/17/google-mi...
rollthehard6··on Why Dentistry Is Separate from Medicine
As far as I know this is similar to my partner's deal and the most expensive thing is a crown and only the fabrication of that is not included, the rest of the treatment for it is in the plan.
rollthehard6··on Why Dentistry Is Separate from Medicine
Must be as I'd certainly notice a few grand per year being spent on dentistry ; )
rollthehard6··on Why Dentistry Is Separate from Medicine
I'm not sure how true that is? Would like to see some statistics on how many people elect for private vs NHS. Myself I've never had private dental healthcare and have no complaints, especially since I am paying probably an average of around 150 USD a year for my dental care and can pay as little as 30 USD a year typically.
rollthehard6··on Why Dentistry Is Separate from Medicine
There is still a divide in the UK - unlike general medical care, dental care is not 100% free at the point of use (Similar for optical care).

Dentists can take a mix of private and (public) NHS patients or specialise purely in private or NHS. If you move to a new area it can sometimes be hard to get into a practice as an NHS patient.

NHS dental care is heavily subsidised but not entirely free (See here for prices where I am in Scotland - https://www.scottishdental.org/public/treatment-charges/)

Typically, if I get a check up and need nothing done other than scale and polish the cost is around 15 USD (The exam part being free)

As a consequence, having some dental insurance plan is not uncommon here - my partner needs more dental work than I do so has such a plan called Denplan.

rollthehard6··on Has There Been a Nuclear Incident in the Arctic?
Characters like Trump and Farage largely owe their success to 24 hour news channels and their insatiable appetite for soundbites and headlines - those guys are non-stop controversy generators and are, as such the ideal match for rolling news.
rollthehard6··on Mkfile(8) is severely syscall limited on OS X
Some years ago I picked up the habit from a predecessor of testing such things with dd instead, that way you can experiment with the effect of different block sizes, so like -

dd of=/dev/zero of=/ddtest.out myfile bs=64k count=65536

rollthehard6··on Masaya Nakamura, Japanese arcade pioneer, has died
Also worth a look is this book by Martin Amis (Yes that guy) - I still own the copy I bought as a kid - http://www.themillions.com/2012/02/the-arcades-project-marti...
rollthehard6··on Masaya Nakamura, Japanese arcade pioneer, has died
What was good about the arcades back at that time was the real world social aspect of it, somewhere to hang out that didn't involve substance abuse ; )
rollthehard6··on Masaya Nakamura, Japanese arcade pioneer, has died
The most amazing thing from that time for me was the first time I heard Defender, let alone saw it. The sound of those Williams games is as memorable as the visuals and gameplay.
rollthehard6··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Yes, and that is exactly the way Trumpet wants it, bait and switch.
rollthehard6··on Microsoft mulls cutting UK datacentre investment amid Brexit concerns
I think you're correct for the simple reason that it's been shown people worry more about immigration, and vote accordingly in places where there are few immigrants, in comparison to places where there are lot of immigrants.
rollthehard6··on Too much sitting, too little exercise may accelerate biological aging
Absolutely, C25K was the best thing I ever did - Run 2x5Ks a week at lunch and a 10K at the weekend. Worked up to 10Ks about 3 or 4 weeks after first 30 minute run. It makes it pretty easy and I lost around 13 lbs from this alone.
rollthehard6··on Command execution on Ansible controller from host
A couple of reasons spring to mind as to why Ansible is an improvement on the eminently workable approach you outline here.

One is idemopotency - The fact that it is not easy to run the above script on a bunch of host just to 'fix up' a config that was somehow broken or to add or amend a directive in httpd.conf type of thing. With Ansible, you could re-reun the playbook and it would only change what needed to be changed to bring everything in line with the playbook, i.e. just the directives in httpd.conf and then do the reconfigure on httpd to bring in the changed config.

The other is inventory, so such a change as I outlined could be, with a one liner playbook command, be run against all Dev hosts only, or Dev and UAT hosts only, or Red Hat hosts only etc, when you're managing a lot of hosts this is invaluable. Even for just checking some config or other easily by running a shell command against some set of hosts.

rollthehard6··on Dd is not a disk writing tool (2015)
Obviously I'm not talking about raw devices, but people copying disks which often don't have that many filesystems on them.
rollthehard6··on Dd is not a disk writing tool (2015)
I came from Solaris land originally and it always surprises me how seldom people use filesystem level utilities to copy such stuff, i.e. ufsdump | ufsrestore or dump | restore

Works a treat and using the fs level tool you know everything will be properly copied, much safer.

rollthehard6··on Nvidia and Audi aim to bring a self-driving AI car to market by 2020
AlphaGo for the simple reason that, in that scenario any human would be absolutely bricking and would be pretty much bound to make an unforced error as a result.
rollthehard6··on Dementia rates 'higher near busy roads'
Easy to imagine vascular dementia rates being higher due to air pollution, would be interesting to see if rates of non-vascular dementia, such as Alzheimer's are also higher.
