rogerthis··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
Why not use the Brazilian system? It's been working for a long time
rogerthis··on Owe your banker £1k you are at his mercy; owe him £1m the position is reversed (2019)
Same thing in other industries.

Worked on big telecom billing back in the days. There was the average fish like me whose bills go to a normal flow when unpaid, and the big fish, like government, big companies, etc that not even have to pay their bills (for a time, of course).

rogerthis··on You Can't Opt-Out of A.I. Online
Lots of bots. Also body-only-soul-less users (as I call those that never look at messages).
rogerthis··on What's your favorite RSS feed reader?
Inoreader.
rogerthis··on Software engineers are not (and should not be) technicians
Thus we don't need that much software engineers. Things should start to get cheaper (considering everything else the same).
rogerthis··on Linksys Velop routers send Wi-Fi passwords in plaintext to US servers
Not only. Probably all ISPs around the world who provides their customers a modem with an embedded (or not) WiFi router do the same.

EDIT: also, if your ISP has a mobile app from which you can change any password on ISP provided devices, then most likely it goes around in plain text (inside TCP/TLS packets, at least).

rogerthis··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder
A brick in the ladder to open source heaven.
rogerthis··on [dead]
Some unusual spike in reports related to Google systems in Downdetector Brazil.
rogerthis··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
As it has been said so many times, tech privacy aware people are the minority. It won't make any difference for my non-tech neighbor (in fact, he will probably be delighted if it helps him with something).
rogerthis··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
Teams have better voice/video. But chat is far worse, absolutely shit, though Slack seems to be working to get there.
rogerthis··on Google I/O Thoughts?
Every year they demo lots of things I never see later.
rogerthis··on The FCC needs to stop 5G fast lanes
Sort of related: "GSMA Open Gateway", specially the quality related APIs.
rogerthis··on Htmx and the Rule of Least Power
A dev myself, I see any new tech that looks like something I've seen before, but different from the immediately previous, as the natural young revolt against the old (5 years older), in an attempt to be important (i.e., e.g. being paid). Sometimes I'm younger than last year too, and I throw away a lot of what I learned. I should strive for wisdom: knowing what should come and what should go.
rogerthis··on Somewhere along the way we forgot about software craftsmanship
Impact should be measured as "features and their (monetary) value", not only "feature". Btw, I don't buy "long-term maintainability of the codebase". Ok, _I_ buy it, sometimes; my son doesn't.

This above may be sad regarding the art side of things, but, well, it is what it is.

rogerthis··on Long Term Refactors
I've found strange there's no "test" string in the post.
rogerthis··on Show HN: Startup funding simulator
Well, I can only add founders and get 100/#(founders). It looks bugged.
rogerthis··on Corporations are not to be loved
Most of the confusion is because of the lost meaning of "love". In my mom's world, things should be liked, and people loved.
rogerthis··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Tangent to this: do you remember the rumor a long time ago about GCP having a deadline to become "something" (I don't remember if 'relevant' or 'profitable' or else). Have it got to that "something"?
rogerthis··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
I've seen these answers:

  - excess hiring during the pandemic;
  - interest rates raised;
  - salaries too high;
  - cut in remote work (to ease return to office later);
  - some weird thing coming;
  - AI;
(I could replace all those semi-colons with question marks.)

rogerthis··on ChatGPT for Teams
The pattern in the footer of Open AI pages is very annoying, unintelligent.
rogerthis··on Lancet journal retracts article on hearing aids and dementia after prodding
After a fast search about the subject, what I understood is that the retracted paper had method problems. Some other place says that a meta-analysis (supposedly of papers with correct method/analysis) confirms similar findings, i.e. hearing loss management benefits for dementia.
rogerthis··on Noteable.io is shutting down
What comes to my mind is this rhetorical question:

How a service with such a wonderful home page suddenly die?

rogerthis··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
Wasted hours of services/softwares with negative ROI in consumer telecom is scary.
rogerthis··on I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions
It's interesting that people speak whatever comes to mind and think it has no impact on other's people lives ($$$). They are some how protected, but shouldn't.
rogerthis··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Could you share your routine for fixing your posture?
rogerthis··on AI Graphics at JetBrains
In terms of new features, for me that's ok. However, the amount of bugs in their bugtracker goes up and up. Also, the CPU/memory usage of their tools is a shame.
rogerthis··on Stack Overflow announces 28% headcount reduction
For some OSS projects, Q&A has moved to its issues system. Some recommend to ask in SO, but the number of others that are ok with questions seems to be increasing.

ChatGPT 3.5 started giving me wrong or not so good answers. So I rarely use it these days.

rogerthis··on Ask HN: Is there a low cost way to learn real K8s, after exhausting minikube?
Hetzner starting with https://github.com/kube-hetzner/terraform-hcloud-kube-hetzne..., plus registry using DigitalOcean.
rogerthis··on Godly – Astronomically good web design inspiration
An example of using "God" in vain.
rogerthis··on GSMA considers giving away mobile device locations through API
As far as I know, they already do this (legally). They seem to be "just" standardizing for interoperability.
